    Many thanks for this video Dan as I am relatively new to allotments (took mine over last year in August and spent every hour possible down there getting it sorted as it was totally overgrown). Amazed with the results I have had with my onions & garlic in my first year of growing proper and I was extremely concerned about storing them as I watched the way that shop bought stuff goes. Much appreciated.

    Thank you. I live in Crete,Greece and make pickled onions...the best small shallots are only in the shop when best for a few months. Now I know how to buy them up and store them !! Your video really helped. Thanks,Jane x Many happy pickled onion eaters in Crete now !!

    Finally got an allotment after being on the list for 5 year. These vids have been a god send pal. Keep them coming. Think I will try to grow a few long carrots, just found a nice deep barrel.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  Před 9 lety

      Have a go at the carrots, it's a laugh.
      Grow some sweet candle short ones too in boxes, they are the best eaters ever.
      Cheers, Dan.

    You can also braid all of these root crops together with their stems. Makes for easy and rustic storage.

    Great tips. I was studying your soil in other videos to start better onions this year. Thank you for all the ideas.

    For the past couple of years I've stored my garlic whole in the freezer which bursts all the cells in the flesh making a paste so no chopping just squash it with the end of a knife. To defrost just run a few cloves under a hot tap for a few seconds.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  Před 9 lety +1

      Good idea, I love to roast whole bulbs too though and gas everybody out the next day so It probably wouldn't work for that.
      Cheers, Dan.

    Excellent advice Dan. I'll be trying it this year as my onions always rot.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  Před 9 lety

      It's not guaranteed but if you can stop the mould getting into the neck by not cutting off too short it sure helps.
      Cheers, Dan.

    Good tip I've done it before and cut loads off only because I've seen others do it,this year I won't I'll be leaving the stems on. Cheers

    Spot on fella. Garlic looks great. I've ordered some form the place you told me about(Mammoth Onions). Should be delivered soon. Cheers. Chris.

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  Před 9 lety

      The ones I have now were originally from them, I went there and picked out some massive ones, but just re-select the biggish good storers.
      Cheers, Dan.

      Wish I could of gone over and pick it myself but its just to far really. We work out that way sometimes so maybe another time. Well the garlic has arrived and I'm pleased with the size. Hopefully if I can get it to a decent size myself I can save some for next year. I'm going to buy some from our potato day at the end of the month and do a comparison. All the best fella. Chris.

      They post out these mammoth onions if you go online and order them.
      I’ve been buying from here for about 8years now, but I only live about 35mins from there so sometimes I get in the car and go out for a run down there.

      You should have plenty of excess stuff to store if next year is as good as last year was.

    Would it be best to just tie them off straight away after harvesting? Thank you for the video, I’m glad to say my first lot of onions we harvested, with long stalks and left them, and they have been beautiful. 🎉

  • @SavageNorthGarden
    @SavageNorthGarden Před 9 lety

    I leave my onion tops on until I use them in the kitchen. Now I know why they store better than my garlic does. I have to let my garlic tops have some room in the storage space too!

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  Před 9 lety

      It's a good way of keeping them.
      Garlic takes a bit less room as you can cut off the stem and just leave about 6" I find.
      Cheers, Dan.

    Excellent video, clear, to the point, with just enough repetition to help us remember! BTW, what kind of "string" do you wrap around the onion tops?

    Do shallots need to be dried before using, or this is just to help preserve them?

    • @kaillipigott6319
      @kaillipigott6319 Před 5 lety

      Don't need to dry before using. It is just to store them.

    What is the name of those awesomely big onions you've shown in this video?

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  Před 9 lety +1

      Those are only the babies, the big ones have already been eaten.
      These are my own bred strain of "Kelsae" I reselected the seed for a bigger bulb but you can grow a basic "Kelsae" up to 6 lbs.
      Cheers, Dan.

    where do you get your giant onions ?

    • @Allotment-diaryUk
      @Allotment-diaryUk  Před 9 lety

      The ones in the video are just babies about 3-4 lb.
      These are called "Kelsae" and are my own strain, but you can grow them to that size from the same variety from the seed catalogues.
      Cheers, Dan.

    well, I was always annoyed when watching lamericans cook and take out huge onion and say "one medium onion", now I finally get it, your onions are watermelons masquerading as onions... I've never seen an onion that humongous before...
