I was born in Japan in 1956, and this footage tells me how Japan was look like when I was born. Most of adults in this film were gone a long time ago.

Yes, indeed. In fact, I`m now 61 years old. Time flies.
Im curious, what is japan nostalgic for, i dont mean to ask you to speak for all of japan but more your experience with it
I was also born in Japan in 1956!!!! This is a wonderful film.
I really would love to say Thank you for posting this film. My great grand father, grand father, father and mother, and I was born and raised in Asakusa Tokyo. This scenery is still living in me.
Bless you for posting this nectar... many of us who are over 70, have never been to Japan and never will be able to, can now thrill to the Japan of our youthful days and pretend...and all this wonderment before modernity struck. I'm still listening to NHK shortwave on my 1962 Sanyo transistor radio which works perfectly. Guess I'll be playing Kyu Sakamoto by this afternoon.
Just go there
You can still go there.
Let's play Subaru.
Kyu Sakamoto has gone. Sanyo also gone. But memory never gone.
Thank you for the nostalgic video

MichaelRogge! I don't know if you're still alive but I love you! Thank you for all of your films! You are a TREASURE!!
進入しようとしている駅(the name of train closing station is....)
(The view of Mt.Fuji & Mt. Oyama from Atsugi military base) (Oil tank train car is from Negishi-YOkohama,through the Sotetsu -line)非学なので英語の文法的誤りを正してくださる方いらっしゃったら宜しくお願いします。
For those who don't know, that is not a swastika at 2:12, but the traditional sign denoting a Buddhist temple or shrine. On a Nazi swastika, the "L" sections are reversed. The "Asakusa Shopping Center" is also the main walkway to the Sensoji temple.
JP Guthrie the shopping street is also called “Nakamise”, “center shops”.
I know it isn't a swastika but the design is pretty similar, it's just flipped. Because of this it's hard for a lot, including me, from not thinking about that. It probably doesn't help that Japan sided with Germany during WW2. Damn sad that in a span of six years a horrible regime turned a symbol of peace used world wide into one that instills a lot of hate and mixed feelings.
Japanese people watching precious video footage are impressed and grateful. Thank you very much Mr. Michael Rogge. 👍
Lovely image, colour and sound quality. I think there's a certain charm in the postwar Japan atmosphere so I always enjoy wandering around asakusa in Tokyo, noge in Yokohama, and shin sekai in Osaka.

Thank you very much. The videos of Tokyo before the expressway was up are very valuable. I often hear that the area around Nihonbashi was particularly beautiful. Please upload a lot again.
I recognized the neighbourhood I used to live in as the train left Yokohama station!
Thank you for your uploading nice film. I live in Yokohama - Tokyo area. I was born in 1960s as a Japanese. 1:32 iron bridge still in use as 60 years ago.
At 6:56 see restaurant wax menus of foods and one of them indicating as "sukiyaki" with plate full of sliced red meat, for only 200 Yen, which means, at that time, the yen to dollar exchange rate was 360 Yen to $1.00, so that plate full of Sukiyaki gourmet costed not even one dollar. Today, if your lucky, it will cost you about 3,000 to 5,000 yen! I know this because I am from Japan back in 1950s also.
That's nothing out of perspective. In 1970, I was at Highlands New Jersey and the following were all $1.99 each; softshell crabs with fries, two lobster tails with fries, and shrimp cocktail.

Thanks for posting this wonderful colour video of Japan in the 1950s. The video starts with apparently a U.S. military housing complex somewhere in Kanagawa Prefecture with views of Mount Fuji (0:28) followed by a train ride (1:07) into central Tokyo, views of Asakusa shopping street (2:03) and Asakusa Kannon temple complex (3:25), images of the Kabuki-za kabuki theatre in Ginza (5:30) and video images of the Ginza crossing area with the Montana pachinko parlor (6:22) and restaurant window displays (6:48) with plastic food, including sukiyaki for only 200 yen!
Thanks for the additional info. Will add it to my description.
The military complex at the beginning is the Atsugi Naval Air Facility, which is located in what is currently Ayase and Yamato cities. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Naval_Air_Facility_Atsugi

every automobile is quite unique and attractive, the people are calm and modern style, just like sets of a movie.

Wonderful! It means from NAB ATSUGI to TOKYO. I born in 1974, and lived in TSURUMI so very interesting for me.
that 200 Yen sukiyaki would cost about 56 cents US at the old exchange rate!
Agree...Thats why the dollars goes a long way on that year....$ 1 = Y365
