    I always love to watch the Andy Williams show. Shirley Booth was an excellent character actress. She played the nonmusical version of hello dolly, The Matchmaker.

    Booth, unencumbered by ever-present Andy, finally sings one her her own Broadway songs from By the Beautiful Sea at around 9;15. 'the Lottie Gibson Number' where she impersonates a young girl. ( a la Lily Tomlin's Edith Ann only twenty years earlier.

    I love when she calls Andy Williams “Johnny”! Interesting that Shirley Booth wore red wigs throughout Hazel but comes on Andy Williams with her white hair. Wonder if this was a wig as well or her real hair?? Either way, she is absolutely charming! The songs she sings may be corny by today’s standards, but lots of fun. Corny or not - this is what the numerous variety shows of the 1960’s were like.

    Miss Booth, like Tallulah Bankhead, Katharine Cornell, and Alfred Lunt and Lynne Fontanne, was one of those exquisitely talented stage performers who somehow big screen success eluded. But as an actress onstage, both in straight plays and musicals, she was
    pretty incomparable. Strange to think that she was the original Dolly Gallagher Levi in Thornton Wilder's "The Matchmaker," a rôle now far better known for its incarnation in "Hello, Dolly." Arthur Laurents, who wrote "The Time of The Cuckoo" for Booth, loathed the changes that were necessary for the film adaptation "Summertime," and far preferred Booth's performance as the original character, Leona Samish, to Katharine Hepburn's as Jane Hudson, as the character became in the film.

      @aeichler  Před 3 lety +2

      Ruth Gordon created Dolly in "The Matchmaker" on Broadway, based on an earlier play, "Merchant of Yonkers," that starred Jane Cowl.

    Shirley had a wonderful voice but only displays her true voice at the very end where you can hear her voice ringing through. By the way the dancers were not singing and Shirley concentrating on the dance steps the vocals were probably recorded earlier but Shirley was totally first class and ridelled with total talent . She was born for her " Hazel " role. In her Oscar winning film Little Sheba she would have been 54 but her Agent had her down as 45... Well she looked 45 .. good on her.. a smart cookie.

  • @tonykool5347
    @tonykool5347 Před 3 lety +1

    Shirley is an absolute delight, her four movies were great, but her singing though perfect for Broadway, is not quite up to par to the rest of her talent. I can not find fault with her, I loved her as Hazel. It goes to show her true star quality, far reaching and always entertaining.

    But...but...but...it's all pre-recorded and they're just lip-syncing to it. And all extra "echo" effect makes it seems all the more removed from real singing. Big disappointment.

    • @davmar5648
      @davmar5648 Před rokem

      I think the end bit is Lip synced. All the bits up to Shirleys solo are live. Shirley struggled with lipsync.. she was from an early generation ... from look who's dancing... she struggles.. But hey ho... she's terrific
