I remember a story I read as a child about a donkey that dressed up as a lion and then they tried to hunt it. The moral was ‘don't pretend what you are not or they will give you what you don't want’.
Obviously appearances matter, whether we like it or not. But I think it is always important to look good because it makes you feel good and not to please others. And always stay true to what you like and not what is popular or common.

As a kid I always loved how Olay looked after her makeover. Not because she was prettier or 'morth worthy' or whatever, but just because she smiled. It might be super cheesy to say but a genuine smile truly is one of the most attractive things a person can have, regardless of everything else (And I don't just mean 'attractive' in the romantic sense, I mean 'attractive' as in 'wow this person seems really nice, I'd love to be their friend and get to know them better') I love episodes where 'bad characters' get a chance to be shown as actual people who are capable of being happy and friendly, especially when it's due to a 'good' character stopping to treat them like a person. I know shows tends to always go back to the status quo, but I want Olay to be happy. Let her be happy!
As a side note, I love your videos so much, they're so perfect for youtube binges. I'm so happy there are other people out there who look way too much into cartoons just like me haha

My mom had that happen both ways, she was skinny and attractive as a young woman and teenager, gained weight after having 2 kids in her 30s then losing weight again after gastric bypass. She noticed how people treated her not as nicely and didn’t pay as much attention to her when she gained weight. Then when she lost it again she was seen as much more attractive and treated better. While she notices this, she doesn’t actually really care that much bout what others think

Personal experience. So when I was young, I was always a little chubby. Then I lost weight, (even though I still thought I was fat at the time), and what I noticed most was how family talked about me. Talked about how good I looked, and then...when I gained it back, and some more due to mental health issues...I remember talks of them saying how I looked like a certain, older family member who was fatter than me honestly. While I've been working on acknowledging that being fat is neither bad nor good, nor an indicator of morality or lack thereof, it still kinda stings. I don't get comments on how I look good, but then I hear them talk about my cousins and its just. I get it, alot of the older folk in my family are kinda stuck on a certain level of desirability politics/respectability politics mentality. It is what it is, though I do my best not to feed into that shit. Cause no kid, deserves feeling like they are only worth hypin up, or paying attention to if they look a certain way, or act a certain way.

    • @Emi.Schneider
      @Emi.Schneider Před 2 měsíci

I feel for you, I myself am big, but due to mental health, I gained a lot of weight from pills, and I noticed that when I was smaller, I got a lot more attention. Even from family. And when I gained weight, all that went out the window and I got looked down at and only maybe 3 people tell me I am beautiful how I am now.
They feed desirability to kids and adults to the point that if you aren't seen as desirable by more people, it makes you feel almost shunned. And tbh, it's part of why I HAVE issues in the first place, I still at 24 cannot see myself in any good light and want to cover up and say I won't attract anyone. No kid should have to tell themselves they will be alone because they don't look like a "pretty" person, smh.

I feel like the Gross Sisters have tragic unspoken sides. Proud Family is sleeping on storylines where we just have one single episode focus on their home life. Or even break it apart where we isolate the sisters away from one another and we see what happens to their personalities or if they’re away from their connection for too long. We saw Olay. We never saw the others when cut off from resources.

I haven't seen a LOT of Proud Family but I was always interested in these 3 probably due to Bebe's Kids showcasing how human characters like the Gross Sisters are and the pote tial for stories of those 3 alone.

While your analysis is good as always, I think something to acknowledge is that in shows like this, where characters have a set design, a makeover episode is almost always temporary cuz they wouldn't wanna permanently change Zoey's design. So we probably know from the start that she'll always end up going back to her normal design by the end. It's not like we expect her character design to be permanently different from this episode onwards.

Oh man, these sort of Makeover Montage episodes/moments were all over the place in the late 90s and early 00s LOL. I don't think they're always bad, sometimes they can be fun to do with your friends just to see what would happen if you try out different looks and such. Maybe this episode could work better if they had every girl in the group changed up their appearance but of course it's only Zoey.
As for why her appearance didn't remain changed, that's just standard for cartoons, very rarely will a character's design change and remain permanent. Same for why Nubia is the only one in the trio that talks. It doesn't need a backstory, it's just a Trope Thing.
As for Olay and Nubia, I never interpreted her reaction to her makeover as being jealous, I think she was just scared of losing her sister to another clique. And I also thought the friendship bracelet moment was really nice, I just wish it held over to the later episodes.
Oh! Side note, I like that they didn't straighten/relax Olay's hair or anything like that. This also happened in Clueless (a movie with another makeover montage). In a time where curly or textured hair was seen as undesirable or "messy", they didn't change Tai's hair, she was just shown how to care for it better so her curls would stand out and not be so dry and frizzy.
The Gross Sisters also named after skincare products (Olay, Nivea, and Neutrogena) hence the whole "why are they ashy" thing lmfao.

seeing a difference in the way that zoe & olei's makeovers are depicted is that while zoe is drawn the same, olei's design is given noticeable changes for the entire time she's in makeover mode. there's not just a difference in posture, her body is drawn smaller & apparently thinner. the shape of her head is less angular & she has a "cuter" face design style, with her original look even when she's smiling she looks different than she's depicted during the makeover. the sort of overbite she's usually drawn with isn't shown, you don't see her gumline, she doesn't even have her braces? it would be one thing if the way her makeover was shown still looked like her with only superficial changes in styling and presentation, like we get with zoe. but for olei it's basically like she's given a body double for the duration of her makeover, with features she couldn't possibly get through a different personal style or even if she just stands a certain way & smiles. there's no like "before/after" shot to make these changes super obvious, but it's like the episode is silently believing that there's certain traits, like the size & shape of olei's body, even her face, her braces, that can't look "good" no matter what. i wonder if one reason they keep the design of the gross sisters being blue even during olei's makeover is that if they changed that, i really think it could have seemed like this was literally just a completely different person stepping out lol, they otherwise change so much of her design, unlike for zoe (which is also interesting when in the one episode of reboot you've discussed that's supposedly about colorism, the show kind of expects us all to believe that if someone finds zoe as she usually looks to be more desirable than other girls, there must be something else going on to "explain" this.)

Why not have her move away from the gross sisters and have her own interests like being a singer and sometimes collaborating with her sisters as "The gross sisters" lol. maybe even date somebody(boy or girl, maybe she is Bi) would have been fun.

    Great video bro!
This episode brings so many memories. I wish all the Gross sisters should've got makeovers. I do feel bad for Zoey and Olay because you can see DIFFERENT reactions they got. Zoey always get the short end of the stick. Every time.......and it shows friendships with rarity is a blessing. Olay got her makeover and she is beautiful and feminity. Her being plus size is beautiful. And the makeover showed her slimmed down. It's really an interesting topic of desirability. We all are BEAUTIFUL but people will have different opinions of beauty. It's very toxic and bullying behavior. Nubia saw the CONFIDENCE in Olay and that bothered her. She wanted to "help" her sister but when..........Olay SLAYED she just got salty. I tell you.....I got goosebumps watching this episode. True! Zoey needed the SAME thing that was done for Olay. This is very enlightening. Keep up the amazing work!!! 💖

If we didn't have to return to the status quo at the end, I think it would have been a more powerful message for Olae to decide to be more middle of the road. Deciding that she liked looking more feminine, and not wanting to be seen as just "the muscle of the Gross Sisters," while also deciding to tone her look down a bit. Ending with a look where she doesn't get as much attention, but still gets to show off her more feminine side. Maybe she even speaks for the first time, and tells Nubia that she likes herself like this, and that if Nubia really cares about her, she won't force an asthetic onto her that she doesn't want.. Ideally, it would end with Nubia accepting, and supporting her sister

The makeover started as a confidance booster to find other parts of herself, but the effects didn't last because of the sibling abuse she got from it and sometimes it's better to be less appealing to most people than deal with an increased amount of abuse from a sibling. Of course I could be wrong. I'm only guessing based on clips.

Something else that is also very insidious in this episode is that the boys found Zoey more attractive now that she was dressed like the black girls. They hardly pay much attention to Penny and especially Dijonay when they are dressed like themselves. But for some guys, something about having blackness put on white woman/girls is seen as more beautiful than the authentic choice. The joke is more like, the only reason they perceive the black girls of the friend group as cuter than Zoey is because she looks like a dork. But as soon as she has makeup she’s apparently cuter than them. It’s taken a step furthers by even showing sticky swooning for her when she’s dressed just like Dijonay, the same girl he’s always dogging.

I don't want fake lashes or anything I just wanted to like try her lipgloss but I know I was bad. I'm blind anyway so um I don't know what I looked like. Now just a little bit older and I am comfortable with myself like a thousand times more.

Something tells me Olay Gina they are death and they don't even speak so probably is the reason why the older sister Nubia she never owed no one explanation why her sisters Olei aunt Gina they have speaking issues so they are deaf and they cannot talk so this is my theory that is tingling right now 16:00

They tried to make Zoe exotic looking & Olay they tried to make her desirable and comfortable about herself so they treated Zoe more different than Olei 9:54

I'm sorry but pretty much no one does plastic surgery for themselves. They feel better about getting it because they conform to societal standards.
