Installing USB Socket In Caravan - Through Light Electrics

- I mostly run on solar power, which means my only 240 power plug is through the inverter at the front of the caravan. Otherwise I have a power adapter that goes into the TV (cigarette lighter) socket at the bottom of the bed. I'd previously changed my cigarette lighter socket set-up, but it hasn't been working as well as I'd hoped.
Having somewhere to charge my phone near my bed would make things much easier. I contacted Burnsco and they sent me this Dual USB/Cigarette Socket.
In this video, I install the USB socket into the spot light wiring near the head of my bed. The new wiring is done in a way that doesn't permanently change the existing electrics and the only permanent change is a hole for the USB socket.
You can buy the USB socket from Burnsco here: www.burnsco.co...

The objective of cleaning [being organised and tidy] is not just to keep things clean, but to feel the happiness and joy of living within that environment. Marie Kondo
Oh that's a great quote! I do enjoy my caravan environment...
Hi Karen great videos ,we have change the 2 front spot lights in our caravan for new ones which have 2 USB ports
in them ,just 2 screws to take out which hold your spots in,then disconnect the wiring , then just replace it for the one
with 2 USB ports in them ,and they are nice and high out of the way for your cable,we have a great man called,Dan Trudgeon
who shows how to replace the spot lights on a Vlog,we paid around £30 for two new replacements .
Regards Kim&Chris
I've heard about Dan's video! Those lights look amazing!
Good on you for sorting this and for giving it a shot yourself. You'll find most jobs like this on a uk caravan relatively simple, and with 12v nothing that's going to kill you. Although I'd be tempted to wrap each new connection in electrical tape, and secure down to the inside of the cupboard somehow, so any rattling in transit doesn't risk anything coming undone.
Yes, I'm so glad I tried doing this job myself 😀Good tip about securing it more...
Nicely done. Need to be careful with how much load you add to the lighting circuit, but that USB socket will be ok, especially because you have LED lights.
With solar power, it is best to charge your phone and other devices as much as possible during the day while the sun is shining and you have plenty of power, rather than running off your battery overnight.
I use to charge my laptop in the mornings only, as it took so much power - but my new battery system is so powerful, I never need to think about it!
Well done Karen.
Thank you😀
Nice one Karen. Will definitely make things easier for you.
Safe travels...........Andy.
It's been extremely helpful!
We had a similar issue wanting usb sockets off the 12v. We replaced 2 spotlights with spotlights that also had a usb socket. Quite a neat and easy alternative.
They do look classy too!
Hi Karen Ruth here from Perth , I’m totally impressed with this video clip, well done girl, a girl after my own heart 💓
Thanks! Sounds like you enjoy giving things a go yourself?
Hi Karen, thanks for sharing a most interesting video and well done. Just recently one of the USB ports has started failing in our lounge room computer and will need eventually to be replaced. Fortunately, I won't have to drill any holes for that job. Anyway, wishing you all the best. Robert.
Ah sounds like you'll be doing some electrical work too!
Wow wow wow 😮 what a great job you of have done Karen. I’m so impressed. You won’t know yourself with that set up. ✅✅✅💡💡💡📱📱📡📡📡
It's been so handy already!
Good skills.
Thanks!
Ideally your wireless router needs to be located next to a window, not surrounded by possibly metal that will reduce the signal.
True... although my caravan walls are pretty thin and not much metal.
There's also a mat that you would lay your phone on to charge and not have to plug it in. Nice job : )
Ah true!
Thanks , im about to fit the same, hardest thing is where to put it.
Took me a while to decide 🤣
This is a great video. Thanks so much, I'm having to add a 12v plug for our TV but we have some spare lights or speaker wire in a cupboard which I may use to add it.
Very nicely done!
Thank you!
Wow, well done!
Really glad I've done this....
Good job
Thank you!
Well done! A woman after my own heart, always looking to make my life easier in my motorhome.:-D
Glad you found this helpful Angie!
Well done Karen 👍
Thank you!
Nice neat job, well done you, ATB Wayne UK.
Thank you!
Well done, neat job.
Excellent work well done !!very impressed Karen 👍
And it’s been so handy!
Nicely done Lady...👍👍👍
Looking to do the same, great install, well done you👍
Hi mark here, I’m in the uk and new to your lovely channel, I also love caravaning like yourself would love to meet up if your our my side of the uk, you drive safe. Mark
Welcome Mark! Unfortunately I’m already back in NZ... slowly editing my UK videos. Great to hear you’re a fellow Caravanner!
Much better than your Grey water clogs 🤢
Does your usb port only work when your light is on, or is it a permanent live as opposed to a switch live?
I wired mine in my old van direct to battery
haha, that was a gross video! The USB is continuously on. @uk tucker I have added a few things directly to the batteries too... but the batteries sit at the other end of the caravan.
Nice neat job me I would have put an inline fuse on it just to make sure if it had a problem it wouldn't hopefully interfere with lighting fuse all the same well done 👍
Well done Kare
I'm impressed too K! Glad you're not colour blind too 😁
hahah and the wires for the lights were so similar in colour!
Yeay!!! That looks amazing!!! Well done 😃😃😃
It's been great to have so far!
Good neat job there and very brave drilling holes in your cupboard. I fitted some LED lights that had USB charging built in, replacing the existing lights. I'd send you the link, but I'll end up in the spam bin. Search "Bob earnshaw fitting LED lights".
I've heard about the lights with the USB in the base! Such a clever idea.
go you, great work. you could easily make a small wood box to cover the back of the USB socket, bit of wood glue would hold it nicely in there.
Good idea! I was wondering if I need to e careful what I put in the cupboard now...
Great job, well done.
Thank you!
Good Job, K!
Thank you!
Hello nice video, just a question which type of wire do you use? Thickness I mean
You've inspired me to give it a go one day. Thanks, your video was really helpful.
Ah great to hear Adele!
Great job!
Thank you!
Well done. Told you I would check. Enjoy.
Nice, useful...
Definitely useful!
Nice job!
Thank you!
Great video!
I need a couple of fans in my van K. What's your hourly rate????
haha, might need the neighbours input too 😜
It is better to solder the wires and use heat schrink to seal them.
Well Done !
Thank you!
Hey great job hun👍And very neat too😁🇬🇧🏴☮️
Just found you . great channel
Glad you're enjoying the channel!
Awesome job! New subscriber from Canada! I have a little RV that I am trying to do this with as well, so hoping mine goes as well as yours did!
Oh welcome! Glad you've found me. Let me know how you go installing the USB😀
@@TravellingK Went and got my supplies and will try it this week. Also found a little 2 volt light that has a usb plug in in it that I will replace my over the bed light with.
Great stuff Karen lol
such a useful vlog. thanks for sharing that. I'm wondering - a little off topic but what would you say is your most costly expense on the road? Cheers
Diamonds
Hmmm I'd say the biggest expense are the unexpended issues that break like car transmission or gas appliances. If you're keen to learn more, I broke down my costs here: travellingk.com/cost-of-living-caravan-rv/
Well done :)
Thank you!
Hi, what size cable did you use for the 12v sockets etc? 1.5mm?
And was it 2.5mm for 240v sockets.
Thank you
good job, giving me some ideas. Powering through the LED light circuitry does that mean the 12v socket/USB works only when the lights are on?
Glad to hear! No, it’s powered all the time
@@TravellingK brilliant!
When did you say your in UK I could do with some fitting 😜
Blimey good job well done Karen🤝👍
haha yeah yeah
I still would 👹
Great job ...you can’t have enough usb
They are so so useful already! Took me long enough to install them, haha
GW Kiddo :)
Thanks!
🤗
Ummmm yeah, why didn’t your neighbour give you a hand? I would have. But anyway, go girl power !! :)
He's still recovering from helping with the clogged grey water pipes, LOL
Maybe Karen insisted she did it herself, instead of having to ask the neighbour. Another string to her bow and to her learning and her independence.
@@davidmbell That's actually exactly what I thought myself. One learns best with hands-on and we all know, Karen likes to learn and figure things out.
haha thanks everyone 😊Yes, I really do enjoy doing things myself - a sense of satisfaction when it works out. Best comment about the neighbour recovering from the clog pipes 🤣I'm making the most of his knowledge!
That’s a lot of wiring for usb socket
But I do like that I haven't permanently changed the caravan!
Time to unsubscribe from this channel I think.
Well Done!
Thank you!
