- On this episode my good friend Mike Howe gives me a hand and we upgrade the suspension on my 1964 impala. My dad help me get this car when I was just 13 years old. It has 55k original miles on the 283 and powerglide combo. We plan on taking this car on Hot Rod Power Tour 2024.

I have been restoring my 1972 W-30 Olds 442. I ordered this car brand new in 72, and we are just finishing a 5 year frame off on it, but I have to tell you, I’m 75 years old, and have been working on cars, specifically performance cars since I was very young. My point is I have never had such a hard time finishing one, the problem you ran into with hardware missing is just the tip of the iceberg in most cases. Parts specifically designed for a particular car not even close to fitting seems to be normal now. And the parts that do fit are sometimes pure trash. Good luck on your project, hopefully you’ll be more successful than I have been, still struggling with some mechanical issues that never should have happened, but almost there now. Seven years ago I had 3 others besides this one in my shop, I restored all of them, and this was to be my last, I had a 68 W-30 Olds 442, a 69 Yenko Camaro, a 70 W-31 Cutlass, and then my 72 W-30, they’ve all been sold with the exception of the 72.
I'm also working on my '64 F85 Cutlass it's a 2dr post sedan w/ a 425ci out of a '66 Toronado. she Runs damn good too. little stuff.. finishing the front disc swap and getting ready to put windows back in after have it painted. Have fun and go get you sum.
@@FleshLessOne I envy you that 425 my friend, mine is a number matching car, otherwise I would probably be putting a 425 in it. That 425 is going to make that little Cutlass fly! I have built a bunch of Olds engines, and the 425 is my favorite. I upgraded mine to just beyond the 70 W-30 specs, it needed a bore, so now it’s a 462, all forged internal components, 11:1 compression, cam is ground a bit beyond the 3:28 duration of the 70, it’s balanced and blueprinted, everything is port matched. Heads are the factory Ga, but internally upgraded as well, everything looks completely stock. It doesn’t even have headers, but the W and Z manifolds have been smoothed internally, to flow better. Hope your project works out better for you than mine did for me, the parts today are junk, everything is built in China, and the quality control seems nonexistent! And by the way the post sedan is my absolute favorite body style. I tried ordering my 72 in the post configuration, but the run had ended, and they were not available anymore.
@@Musclecar1972 my Old's is and was all changed up when I got it in 2018. Mtr was built in mid 90's but not much driven so it's got a set of 'J ' heads but I've got a set of 'C' cyl heads that are all redone and ready to bolt on. also I've got the ST-300 Jet a way trans in it but have a corp. TH350 all built for it also. just going with a mild period muscle car and simple stuff. HEI Q-jet Eldbrock intake headers and a 10bolt 3.23 posi. want to keep it freeway drive able. oh and a Ultra Dyne .484 total lift Flat tappet cam. it's got a 4 core Desert cooler Harrison rad. It ain't much but it will get around. Hope yours goes better for you and look forward to a video of it on CZcams in the near future. I have a couple on here but nothing to busy as it's all just too much these days with All the others doing these boring LS swaps and going way over board. Thanks for the kind words. Best of luck to You, Sir.
@@FleshLessOne Same with you my friend, don’t sell that car short, with that small light body style, and the 425, it will be impressive. My car is near completion now, Monday afternoon it should be completed and up and running correctly. I had an issue with my intake that was very difficult to diagnose. Ended up milling the port to head surface.07 thousandths so it will now be sealed, and making sufficient vacuum. Every component of this car has been upgraded, and I mean everything, lol I’m thinking it’s time to part ways with it, I turned 75 in January, and the reflexes aren’t what they used to be. This car is going to be a handful even for a younger man, let alone an old geezer like myself. 👍
@@Musclecar1972 Don't let it go before you get some enjoyment out of it. Too much work has a way of wearing on us but don't sell it off before you get some time behind the wheel. You don't need to strut it's stuff and could just drv it around normally like any other. You've come Much too far to go back now. Happy Summer and try and post a video of it. I'd love to see and hear it. Take care my friend.. btw where are you located ..? I'm in Oregon but Originally from S.F Bay Area, thinking of moving later this year or early next to the mid-west. Missouri seems like a nice quiet place. I'm 58 this October. so. oh my other ride is a '64 Chevelle El Camino. it's my other project runner. 327ci 5spd parts hauler. let's keep in touch..
sir.
The cooler it looks ..... the rougher the ride lol!!! Good luck with it!
That 57 looks killer!
57 looks money with the cragars and the impala looks great with the old 57 wheels i think u did the right thing!
That Bloke is rockin some Aussie sayings
Bob’s your Uncle…And Tootles 😂
🇦🇺👍
If you're Canadian and have British grandparents, you probably say those as well, I think its just a commonwealth thing...
Probably the best home for all of those wheels.
all the old Impalas id rock, that 64 is sweet. i have my first car, my grandmothers 66 Chevelle.
My dad has owned a 64 Impala SS for forever... I had it for about 10yrs and now he has it back... His is originally white with red interior, so your car hits home HaRd!! Happy watching this video
David, Perfect wheels for the '64 looks timely and accurate and the stance is just right. Tom in Orlando.👍🏼
my first car was a 64 impala 2 door brown. in late 70 early 80s. with a L82 would turn low 12s in the 1/4 mile. i woulda left the extra coil in the back. the secret to the wins in that ole 64 was it hunched down in the back on take off and had 3 or 4 car lengths on the other cars that was spinnin tires.. it just hunched down n went.
my uncle worked for Steakley Bros. Chevy in Tx from the late 50s til early 80s. My cousin got plenty of cool cars in the 70s thru him. My favorite was a 64 Biscayne 4 dr 283 2sp pwr glide b/c the car was a time capsule. 10k garage kept grandma miles. The car was as new in the late 70s still. lt had the bubble wrap seat covers. You couldnt hear it idling at red lights and it ran silent at 70mph like a ghost down the highway and got good mpg's doing it. l now believe those were the best value/bang for your buck utilitarian vehicles the US auto-industry ever made. People comfortably paid them off in 2 years w/ blue collar jobs in the 60s. lf l was going to restore one, even a 2 dr l think ld go back to the 283v8 2sp w/ single exhaust for that silent ride. lts underrated these days lMHO.
That Impala is sick!!! That’s awesome you still have your first ride.
That impala is sick as hell, I’m a big fan of the big cruisers anyway. I’d drive the hell out of that impala.
I love the look, I would just worry about the rear overhang catching even encline. I would have kept the rear higher. But at the end of the day it's your hotrod and it's what you want. But I do love it though
Wow,the stance looks awesome bro.
Just a suggestion, try limiting straps for your rear suspension. Beats hitting a pothole and losing a coil.
good choice on taking the Impala on power tour... it deserves it!
so sorry that I sold my '57 no post resto project. Love those cars
Dave you got a good eye for your rides definitely a good move swapping the wheels that impala is super sweet glad to see you working on it the impala and belairs are my favorite keep doing what you do brother 👍
It looks really good 👍
Anything 1964 lowered = awesome 😎 Nice work!
Definitely keep the Cragars on the 57. Such a bad ass look!!
Dave, your channel just became one of my top 5. Glad I decided to check it out. Faster also is a great show with just the 2 of you. Mad love from Vegas.
Very cool taking your first car to PowerTour '24. I hope my '64 Nova Wagon will be more ready than sketchy and we can cross paths out there sometime. You are a lucky fella to find your first love after all these years.
Oh! And thank you for putting the chrome steelies back on the 57 😂❤
Personally I like the Cragers on both cars, but it is yours and you like it the way you built it, so it is cool.
The trailer queen
I bought 1" rear drop springs for my 66 and it seamed more like 2", they weren't long enough to reach the perches at full droop either. Good luck at Power Tour, that looks like the perfect ride for that. Don't forget your bumper jack, makes it a lot easier to other jacks under it on the side of the road.
To see such art, my dad's 65 Belvedere wagon would be bowling slammed with rims and 9 passengers you can't see.
Personally I like the looks of the cragers on the 64, but if you have to change to fit the brakes I get that. I think you need to do some work on the engine bay before going on tour. One suggestion would be to go with an old school three deuce set up as that would be a cool factor, and you do not see many of them around anymore….. Something out of the ordinary, but would really be something that the folks would like. A three deuce with the small block chev go together like ham and eggs and look cool…..
I’m glad you released a video today bud I found my dad dead this morning and it’s really got me down this video made it easier because it took my mind off of it for a little bit
Sorry for your loss, Condolences to your father, Dad. R.I.P
More videos of the impala please !!!! New subscriber just arrive
You should get the underside dry ice cleaned and painted.
Waiting on this one..🤘🔥
Thats bad ass now.
I think the '57 would look good with steelies painted body color and dog dish hubcaps. Cragars look good on all the American made cars from the 1960s.
Subbed Dave's channel a while ago good content similar sense of humor to mine lol. Nice and dry no sugar...
😁🇬🇸👍
Great post!
Dave, Just leave it alone. It was just fine the way it was. Never can leave well enough alone, can you.. ?
The 57 needed Cragars. It looks perfect now.
Youvd landed on your feet...andchave prospered... like a flower you have bloomed...lol
Nice group of friends and good golly youre still in it..!!
Howe’s It Doin Garage
had one with the 327 2 bbl the best upgrade I ever made was getting rid of the slideglide 3 speed turbo 350 replacement made it so much better driver both on the highway and in the city especilly in stop and go slow driving
Impala looks awesome. See you on Power Tour!
That is one sweet impala!!
My brother had 2 64 Impala’s. Great cars. I’m going on power tour also, with my 71, big block, 5 speed Nova. See ya there
You'll be wanting a gear vendoes overdrive tp help the little mouse and power glide get down the road better.
It'll definitely save stressing the power train, and improve fuel mileage by good percentage.
I'd be looking seriously for some better front seats, because your gonna need them after the lowered suspension, couple straps to keep rear springs in place, and couple of skid plates to protect oil pan as well as the transmission pan from bouncing off hard surfaces.
Looks great! Subscribed to your buddy’s channel. Thanks Dave.
Dave, you upgraded the brakes but you have to put a modern split master cylinder. Just looking out for you buddy.
Awesome I got the exact Chinesium co tell arms for my Chevelle . Cool to see a relatable build
The wheels look great on the 57 👍👍
Awesome, see ya on the tour!
I would it looks amazing with that wheel combo
looks sweet, see y'all out there on power tour
Man the impala needs some old school Cragar star wires or Astro’s
That Camero is ridiculous.
Still have my first car, too- bus actually, ‘68 VW camper van. If those walls could talk…
👍👍👍👍👍
I love single circuit msster cylinders
Man you got some nice cars.
The Impala looks so good lowered David! Great video
Wheel and tire size on impala please looks badass!
Dave. You're worse that my kid! Get them hooptie wheels off that 64! Put the cragars back on,and put either slots or torque thrust on the 57. Your buddy DD Speed Shop is gonna bust your balls for putting them on there?
See you on power tour.
Newbern it looks flat out nasty Congratulations
This reminds me of the time menand buddybcut coil springs on his 70 camaro. We to jack it up to get off lift it was old style thabcame uo out of floor. I had a convertible and 2 door hardtop 64 both had rusted out trunk floors
Are you doing the whole power tour all the way to Indy? AnD Hot Rod Shop will be doing the long haul again this year 👍🏻👊🏼🙌🏼 see ya out on the tour 👍🏻🙌🏼 and yeah I saw that guy out in front of the coliseum in Biloxi at the swap meet too 😂😂😂🔧🔧🔧
Nice work Dave, 2x questions, what supports the rear of that lower control arm
You put all those nice disc brakes on but still using a 60yo master and booster??
I like looking at lowered cars. I don't care to drive them very far.
" ish" should be part of car building / repairing lexicon.
👍
Dave's not here, man! We're gonna lose the shop.
Great video. You need longer videos though
David. Going on Power Tour huh. We used to call that taking a trip. It was something to do, not a great accomplishment really.
Wow had that car for 50 years
Please keep some wider rubber on the front of the 57. That's a big heavy motor and big brakes for pizza cutters.
Even if you have to go billet rims for increased clearance.
Is the Impala on the bump stops still?
On your buddies Camaro, nice car but why did he install the steering wheel upside down? Three spoke wheels need the middle spoke facing down when wheels are straight ahead.. three spokes facing up is just “tarded” like your shows content keep it going.🤙
Howesitdoin garage
64 and 65 are entirely different chassis and differential, Im making this comment 3 mins into the video. Good luck David Im a big fan, but good luck.
64 without daytons ... not gangsta
With the fronts tucked under like that, how much steering is there before the tyres hit the guards? Can it deal with shopping center car parks for Coffee n Cars events?
Maybe get a custom wrap to simulate "The Love Machine"😅
And whip up some furry slip on seat covers
This should be a fun series. My first car was a black '62 Impala, I loved it.
Wheels look way better on the impala.
Thought the Ls mustang was going on power tour?
How big is your shop?
What, no 11/4" sway bar?? Guess the adjustable coil overs will suffice....and why no hardware??
Cart-horse....
I know Mike from United BY Trucks
How tall is your shops side walls where the garage doors are
She looks bad a** with those wheels. She looks good lowered as well.
Any more info on your mates Camaro?
How bout a Jack stand under the car in case
Hey Dave I'm asking on all the car channels i watch, do you know of any 1st gen Ford escorts for sale?
Sounds like you live next to an Interstate.
Are you going to go to a dual master cylinder ?
Looks like he has it but is waiting for the rear brakes to go on first.
a 64 impala is the coolest first car! I had a 77 Oldsmobile 88 and it was NOT cool!
Nope. Those wheels don't look right for the 64.but the 57 looks just right now.
Do you need me to come drive your 57 for you on powertour?
Her name is Crystilll.
I will never understand why people want something so low and the rubber band tires! Potholes ,semi truck tire pieces amoung other things can do damage to them.
But it’s not my ride.
