    As I continue with the Fro Film Project I talk about the NEW old camera I just picked up, the Nikon F4.
    What a fantastic camera, it was the first Pro Nikon to incorporate autofocus and it is built so well. What I really enjoy about this camera is the fact that every function is tied in with a dial. If you need to change the ISO theres a dial, if you need to change the shutter speed, theres a dial. Everything you want to do with this camera has a way for you to control it.
    If you are looking to pick up a film camera to learn on you can get a really clean Nikon F4 for $200 or less.

    I think the “Ph” mode was for Program mode but with priority on highest possible shutter
    speed. The Nikon N8008 (F-801 in Europe) hade the same setting.

    The F3 is not fully mechanical :) the F2 is.

    Nikon F4 wasn't the first professional autofocus camera, that distinction goes to the Minolta Maxxum 9000 that predates it by 3 years, although there's no question that the F4 had a bigger impact.

      Maxwell Starr The F4 is purely amazing. Although I now use digital often, my F4 still functions perfectly. I've owned it for over 20 years and have shot of 165,000 exposures on it. The only thing I need to replace is the eye cup.

  • @jonesr101
    @jonesr101 Před 11 lety

    Hi Jared, Ph mode is Program High mode - it is similar to the regular Program mode but it will choose wider apertures (less DOF - higher shutter speed). Another neat feature the F4 did first was that the matrix meter was coded to read situations when oriented for portraits as well as landscapes; it proved over time to give way more accurate exposures consistently partly for this reason.
    Of all the cameras I own, it is still the one I reach for and bring around most often. It was a masterpiece!

  • @2003shaker
    @2003shaker Před 11 lety

    Jared, I don't know if anyone else mentioned this, but the F3 was actually the first Nikon professional model that wasn't fully mechanical. It wouldn't fire without a battery (except through a separate shutter button and then only at 1/80 sec.) and people freaked out about that. The motor drive when attached would also supply power to the camera, however. The F3 was also the first to have a built-in auto mode (aperture priority only). I bought one late last year and it is fantastic.

  • @Lawful_Rebel
    @Lawful_Rebel Před 8 lety +2

    The Nikon F4 is an absolutely brilliant camera. In fact Jared's is the F4s with the MB-21 battery grip. The F4 weighs about 1.1kg and the F4s adds about 400g on to that with the grip plus 3 extra batteries. It's a Beast!
    I bought the standard F4, it's heavy, but easily manageable. I actually have never used an autofocus lens with this camera in all the time i've owned it, it is so comfortable to hold (perhaps not for someone with smaller hands) it facilitates quick easy focusing with Ai, Ais and even Pre-Ai lenses of any focal length. I'm not a big fan of extra wide lenses personally, so the Nikkor 35-70mm Ais zoom (when I use it) is perfect and with it's weight (about 500g) it balances brilliantly with the F4 and the Nikkor 105mm f/2.5 Ais just belongs on this camera I think.
    That being said, of course pre-Ai glass won't couple with the meter automatically, but stop down metering is just as quick and easy to do when the need arises.
    The sheer range of lenses this camera can take is incredible but if I were to stoop to attaching a piece of modern gelded plastic s**t (which operates fine in manual and shutter priority I believe) onto this beautiful piece of machinery, I would feel dirty and frankly ashamed. Therefore, I never would.
    I'll take a manual focus Nikkor lens (Pre-AF) any day. If you fit the correct focus screen with split-prism (if you need it) and practice, you'll be able to nail it every time. However, The standard B screen, or even nicer the E screen will works just as well if not better.

    I am Nikon F4 user :) . Ph is Program High. This means your F4 will adapt exposure to WIDER aperture . Usually 3.3 , 2.8 2.0 1.7 1.4 . And this is the best mode Ph for G lens . I love to use Ph with my 85mm 1.4G .

    Nice video! I own an F4 and occasionally put film in it for that old-school type feeling. The shutter-and-wind-sound is really nice - without film in it has a mechanical clanking quality to it but loaded with film it sounds so sexy. This camera is Nikons holy grail since it can do almost anything. It's (AFAIK) the only Nikon who can use the full spectrum of Nikon-lenses INCLUDING unmodified pre-AI lenses.

      Warning about eBay F4: Watch out for needed missing parts. The listing I bought from did not lie -- he just listed what's not included with obscure part numbers without stating what they were and that they were necessary.. I paid $118 per the stated price, but then had to buy from other listings $41 viewfinder and $75 battery grip, both necessary to operate the camera. I must say the result looks like new.

    I don't know his opinion, but in my opinion the AE-1 is a very nice camera. The only downs I can remember are manual focus and the shutters are notorious for jamming with age. If the shutter squeaks, oil the fly wheel and it will last a long time.

    Sometimes, I miss film. I went into my old backup hard drive to find something and ended up getting lost in the folder of the martial arts photos I took of my son before my film Nikon died (which it did in the middle of a tournament).
    But, if I shot film now, I'd go broke on processing and prints (I have no room for a dark room or any kind of film and print processing setup).
    I look forward to seeing the results of your film adventures.

    The canon AE-1 / AT-1 is a great camera, built like a tank. And does the job.
    Since it is from before the EOS line, lenses for it are really cheap, but the AE-1/AT-1 is not compatible with any of the EF/-S lenses made today.

    Sure, I can totally understand that. I'm sure he's a busy guy. But honestly, this is starting to drag on by now. Again, I'm just giving my humble opinion here.
    I've read that shots on film can fade away a little when left undeveloped for too long, not sure if there's any validity to that since I've seen people develop 50year old shots and still get usable negatives. Nevertheless, that's something to perhaps keep into consideration since he used a sensitive film.
