@Benjamin Hering I'll bet something like 99% of petstore bettas live less than a year after their purchase, when many of them would otherwise live 3+ years with really good care. People buy bettas for their kids, as ornaments, to dabble in pets, etc. Most of these fish die of neglect.
If Zach hadn't bought these bettas, it's not like they would have had better lives.

I wonder if the temperature killed them, or if the koi killed them. Either way, they surely didn't last more than an hour.
Them fighting each other was probably the least of their concerns, at least compared to the temperature and koi.

I cannot stress to you how much how HORRIBLE dropsy is to deal with I stressed for 3 weeks and I was finnally able to help my fish and it still has issues luckily I was able to catch it soon enough to help it but alot of people are not gonna be so lucky

In Australia we don’t keep them in cups, is that normal for overseas? They have small tanks just enough room for them to turn around (for males) and females are normally kept with other tropical fish like neon tetras and other tropical fish community tanks 😊💕✨
@@Izzii_Bizzii I'm also from Australia, to be exact Brisbane QLD almost all stores i've been to keep them in a small tank maybe at least 2-3 times bigger then the cups, which maybe a slight improvement it still not great, and it not just common over seas for people to put them in small tanks it happens a lot over here, people are dumb, i mean if you go to gumtree or Facebook market place you can see a lot of tiny cramped tanks for sale, which look remarkable similar to tank advertised for betta fish, so make you think what has happened to them, also if you try to argue differently and your from Victoria your opinion is already invalid, all my respect for you guy went down the toilet the 10th time when you guy kept making huge gathering as soon as your lockdown ended only to be put right back into lockdown lol JK

@@alfiehiggins5913 no, they don't. their tails are all massively different and their fins too. that's how they've been bred - to look different and appealing from one another. veiltails are incredibly different from halfmoons and crowntails - if one cannot see that, then you probably need glasses.

You might be surprised. Bettas only fight to the death in small confined spaces.
They'll defend territory viciously but if a betta can retreat they'll rarely even touch.
Their territories aren't really big either, especially if you'd have a bunch of plants to break line of sight. They don't leave their own territory often.
I mean, this many in a small bare pond with goldfish is a bad idea for sure, and unless the females outnumber the males a few times they'll get chased like crazy. But a betta pond is achievable.

@@shiggyschapstick1697 5 is the minimum, but they can survive in 3.5 I had one in a 3.5 for 3 years. But I'd recommend 5 because anything lower you have to do very frequent water changes or they might die from amonia poisoning

This is REALLY hard to say but I think the pet store took Better care of them then he did. They had individual cups which was way to small. but it’s better then having a ton in one area which can result in death.

Why does everyone call them betta-fish? They're bettas - period. This was an exercise in utter stupidity.
1. There's no heat.
2. The koi will eat them.
3. There are no shade plants for which to adhere the male's bubble nests for spawning, shade, or hiding - a very stressful environment.
4. Food???
5. No folks, betta males only fight to the death in enclosed environments and often lose interest in fighting when one opponent's fins have been sufficiently torn and worn out. In an open territory a weaker male is simply vanquished. The stronger male does not run after the weaker to finishing it off. They are not stupid.
6. The male looks after the nest/spawn but chases off the female. Only in a closed environment does the female face harm with no place to run.

P.S. We discontinued raising bettas when our fish began being put into those dam containers by our customers. The fun was over. In our hatchery we'd put males individually into our live-bearing, small tetra and other peaceful tanks. They became glorious in their freedom from being confined.

@@urfriendlycaucasian9501 they don't grow in ponds like that - not even wild ones who haven't been domesticated and bred to be more aggressive and colourful. wild bettas live in densely planted, stagnant, warm, massive rice fields. wild bettas are a completely different breed and have duller colours, and even they often fight. the bettas at these pet stores are in-bred to build their aggression and colouring.

Dude you shouldn’t put gold fish with any other fish they produce way to much waste. and the two species need different water temperature. The betta fish like warmer water around 75 for the lowest and around 82 for the highest while a gold fish needs water in like the 50 if i rember correctly.

They are very different fish that can not live together. Goldfish are cold water, no salt, (or a bit, but not tropical) need massive amounts of space, and are from a ompletly different family. Carp.
Betta fish need a heater, that is bad for goldfish. They have different diets ect.

I honestly would like a follow up video on the current remaining population of these bettas. I watched it in disbelief when you started pouring them into the pond. Now I'm no fish expert, but I have owned plenty of bettas before and the most obvious rule was to never combine males.
Unless of course they have a huge enough tank- but even with like 5 they wouldn't have enough space to make territorys in there :/
You rly shouldn’t even combine females! I believe the only time betta fish should be in the same body of water as each other is if they’re being bred.

I don’t have betta fish and I know they don’t fight everything but they DO usually fight other bettas. That’s why their name is “Chinese fighter fish”. Also I was saying there’s a reason betta live longer in captivity. Bettas CAN be kept with other fish but it usually ends with the betta or the other fishes hurt / dead.

They'll only defend their territory viciously. They won't chase a fleeing competitor outside of it. They'll rarely even attempt anything beyond flaring fins at eachother if escape is an option. But in an everyday tank a fight to the death is the only option.
This pond could certainly hold 5 males and a bunch of females if you take the other fish out and add a load of plants.

@ninjalover69 Koi are OMNIVOROUS. If it's edible and it goes in their mouth, they'll eat it. Mollies and minnows can swim fast, and reproduce quickly, so they don't all get eaten. Bettas are poor slow bastards. He didn't even go for wild type plakats but full on fragile veil tails.
