  • Little India was never intended by Sir Stamford Raffles to be an area designated for Singapore's Indian community. Instead, it developed its identity organically over the years becoming an enclave for the Indians. However, its reputation of rich culture, heritage and food options became tainted with the Little India Riot about a decade ago.
But, that didn’t stop Little India from being ranked #19 on Time Out’s world’s coolest neighbourhoods in 2022! So what helped Little India become the coolest neighbourhood? Join Joakim Gomez as he walks on the wow side of Little India and discover gems that are not even found on google maps!
    0:00 Introduction
1:21 How cool is Singapore's Little India?

In south africa we don't have indian town but theres alot of indian food everywhere. Even the grocery stores have spice mixing area, fresh burfi, gulab jamun, chana magaj, jalebi, all different kinds of sev, and crunchy fried dhals that taste better than haldirams prepacked versions. And our delis have so many different types of Indian meals i won't even start cos theres such a wide variety. Theres aisles full of different chutneys, achaars and kuchlas etc. In my area even whites call fresh produce by Indian names like brinjol and dhania. Singapore has a few nandos branches they should try more south african foods I'm sure they will love it, alot south african foods are very favourful and you won't find anything close to it in any other country.

The garland owner should host garland tying classes and I am sure there will be people interested. Just watching a few minutes had me intrigued. This could be a way to spread the art to more people. And also a new stream of income for him.

They "restored" and developed Chinatown, and turned it into neat section of town.
    As Chinatown, it is ruined.
The Malay Village project was a disappointment and was demolished.
They then proposed renewing Little India.
Heavens to Murgatroyd, leave Little India alone came the collective outcry from Singaporeans..

St. Andrew's Cathedral was built by labourers from South India.
They were brought to Singapore by the Brits and treated inhumanely.
There's so much pain and suffering endured by these poor workers.
Today the white men is taking credit for the majestic Cathedral.

The lower castes in your country were treated worser than what Britishers did. You people don't even allow the lower castes from entering temple, denied education, deprived them of self respect by imposing untouchability, breast tax. What's worse is that u still practice these acts. Judging by ur name I see that u r from Tamilnadu.
      1. Didn't a man of another caste, defecate in the water tank of lower caste? (Happened two weeks ago, not sure)
      2. A lower caste school headmaster was stopped from hoisting the national flag on Independence day. When it became news, the District magistrate brought the police force to protect the women to hoist the flag again.
Kids born after 2000 are fine, they don't have the traits of their parents. It's just the ones who r born before 2k are superstitious and spew hatred.

As an ethnic Chinese, Little India still preserves quite a bit of its original vibe of the area. Chinatown, however, has been overly sanitised and overly organised to the point it has lost much of the charm that it initially has. It looks just like another town in Singapore. There's beauty in being a little bit chaotic, a little less organised. In fact, Little India looks more like an Indian Town when the migrant workers swarmed the area, thronging the alleys and sitting around on grass patches. It gives an energy and vibe to the area, though it can get so packed in the alleys you regretted walking into it halfway through.
