Crossing Scotland West to East | 190km through The Highlands

- Wanting to get away for some solitude I came up with a trail from the West Coast to The East through some of Scotland's most wild and remote landscapes. I wasn't too sure if the trail I had plotted would be passable , so I set off wit some trepidation to head through the Scottish Highlands and traverse Scotland West to East..... almost coast to coast

Pure dead brilliant
I remember when the old signalbox was operational before the RETB signalling took over an me and my butty Mike (we were both Train Drivers, now long retired) were invited up into the old signal box by Jimmy, the signalman, who was a real character to exchange railway banter. The 360 degree views from inside the box were absolutely spectacular... what a fabulous place to work... I also remember encoutering "Dave the Juggernaught" by the railway bridge shown in your video, who was carrying the biggest rucksack I'd ever seen before or since... it was at least 100 litres... he was completely buggered and he put his rucksack down when he spoke to us.... He had a ghetto blaster and loads of cans of food/drink in his rucksack, and everthing but the kitchen sink, it being his first, and probably last expedition to the Highlands... I almost felt sorry for him. We stayed in the SYHA, where we encoutered a large stag, complete with huge antlers loitering outside.... Tom, the Manager explained that he was very old and had lost most of his teeth, so was thus reliant on people feeding him, hence him becoming tame(ish)... We were told that he later had to be shot, as he would obviously be unable to feed himself in the winter. Tom the manager, who was in his 60's, was well known for inviting all comers to race him round the forestry track circling Loch Ossian... Memories, memories... now my knees are knackered, so no more galavanting around the highlands carrying 65lb rucksacs (as weighed on the scales at Abergavenny Station) for me...
I'm a signalman. Always daydreamed of box's like that. But even the ones I did years back. It may have been romantic looking. Bit trying to keep warm during the winter wasn't so 🤣
The fact that, once again, I've watched one of your feature length videos in one go says a lot about how engrossing and interesting they are. Superb, top quality work as usual, and what an amazing landscape. Thank you for taking us along on your cross country adventure.
Thanks Valarie - very much appreciated 🙏👍
The videos are always of incredible quality, nothing offensive, no unwanted personal opinions, that some may find offensive.
Just the kind of video that you would allow your young children to watch, and gauge their reaction on the incredible beauty of the Scottish highlands.
Video heaven,
What an absolutely fabulous vlog. I can't believe the amount of work you have to do, in producing this, AND all the climbing and cycling. Such a beautiful part of our great country. I so look forward to your vlogs. Inspirational. Thanks so much. Beautiful. The venison burger just looked fab too!!! 😊
Thanks Victoria 🙏 was a fine trip and I can confirm the venison burger was rather nice :)
Thanks for watching

Another sensational video Murray. You're such an inspiration 👏🏽
Thanks Josh - Twas a fun trip and good way to sprang the long weekend ;)
I'm really running out of things to say, so I will just say a great big thank you. 🙏
Really enjoyed this longer video, I settled down to a great nights viewing, better than anything on the tv! Really appreciate all the work that goes into it, it enables me to feel like I’m travelling the route too, thank you so much!
Looked a great trip mate and sad I couldn't make it. Until the next time, Atb.
Missed you Ray - next time :)
I've always wanted to do this, now I know it can be done, thank you. I'll be trying out that route when I get the free time, greetings from Spain
Hope you manage it - it’s was a fine way to spend a few days in the trail :)
Thanks for watching
Murray
Beautifully filmed once again, Murray. What a wonderful way to spend an evening, watching you biking your coast to coast route on our TV screen.

The guy that did that minister - Pete Bowsher is from my town. Always find it funny seeing that so far away. What an adventure that was. Amazing 🤩
Just watched your west to east trip, we know the Rannoch, Loch Tay area. Very enjoyable viewing. We watch your videos regularly. Many thanks.
Murray you are simply a genius. More power to you.
Oh my that got my bike juices flowing Murray.. I've just about got my bike legs n lungs going and ready to hit the Bikepacking trails once the earth warms... That was a lovely excursion and I thank you... 🚴♀️🚴♀️🚴♀️😎🥃
Thanks Jim - just watching your video - glad you got the phone (and the tide was going out!!)
Wow Murray what fantastic video we follow all your exploits and enjoy them all but this one was totally different 😊 , you deserved a big dram after that trip take care and we'll see you on next weeks video 👍👍
Yes! Brilliant to zoom out after work. Greetings from Germany :)
Very enjoyable hour Murray! One for the BBC, love the longer formats. I tell you what though, some good chow, that burger! haha. Thanks for the adventure.
The burger was bloody fantastic 👌👌👌😂👍
We saved this to watch on one of our movie nights. Better than any Hollywood blockbuster! Yet certainly as well produced! 😊🙌. The effort you put into your videos, both physically and in the edit doesn't go unnoticed by your viewers. We really enjoyed the cycling element to this cross country adventure too. Thank you so much for taking us along on this epic journey, and for providing us with a throughly enjoyable night's entertainment 😊🙌👍
What an amazing trip, love the photography. If doing that route again the route from Carie on Loch Rannoch to Invervar in Glen Lyon is a very pretty route through the forest by a stream and out onto the moor, a bit easier.
Great video again with fabulous scenery, thanks again for your time and effort. Into glenmorangie 10 year old and Talisker as well
Thanks Harry / like a Glenmorangie too - Talisker less so 😂😂
@@ScotlandsMountains like all single malts to be honest, just usually gets what's on offer
Amazing places indeed!!! Already a subscriber...Nice and ecological trip...😎👋👋👋 And the silence must be fantastic, no noise of any kind!!! The Real peace of mind...
Wow, Murray you pedal a bike fantastic 😂love the bike ❤🇬🇧👌
🙏👍
Absolutely EPIC journey Murray... some hard graft but well worth the adventure. Nice work sir.
Thank you - Twas a fine trip for sure and nice to cross Scotland at last :)
A fine exped on 2 wheels Murray. 🚴😎👍 Always wondered what that section is like from the bothy to Loch Treig. Glen Almond is lovley indeed... Finally finished this on the big telly, over a few days. When the wife is working or has fallen asleep 🤭
Thanks Kev 🙏🙏
Another superb video murry thanks for a great watch 👍👍
Well done, that's some weekend you had
I have sore legs just watching you 😅
a wee dram in the morning coffee is a great start to the day
amazing - so inspiring - well done I learn loads watching your videos.
Brilliant video Murray have to admire your stamina as not the easiest way to travel especially the first day. Never thought you'd make it on some of the sections. Rannoch Moor Station I've been to many times and had a lovely meal at the cafe. Especially loved seeing you go through Glen Lyon as it's a wonderful area. Loch Tay and Forest are wonderful area to see but really this whole part of Scotland is my favourite. Many happy memories of wonderful times. ATB Murray.
Thanks Julie, the cycle down Glen Lyon with the sun shining and the free wheeling was very nice (especially after the tracks I had gone over in the prior 24hrs!!lol) Added to that I had a full tummy after a lovely bite to eat at Bridge of Balgie made it even more fun cycling down :)
Thanks for watching

Heyup Murray, We just finished watching your film in its entirety. It's fantastic buddy ! My spider sense tells me you'll have earned another award 😊 . Your filming editing and music just fits so well together. Sure you're inspiring folk to get out to the mountains and treat them with the respect those places deserve 🙏👍🏼👏👏🫵
Thanks Fraser - much appreciated 🙏👍
Loved it! What an epic weekend. Thanks for sharing
Watching with my fractured ankle in a heavy cast for 8 weeks! Enjoying the vicarious pleasure of the great outdoors through your channel.
Hi Anna- on no - hope the videos can take you mind off your injury for a wee while. Wishing you a speedy recovery and hope the ankle heals well and quickly

Absolutely epic thank you 🙏
🙏 thank you
Excellent yet again ❤🏴❤
Great video thanks for sharing
A belter of a video, really enjoyed watching that tonight Murray! 👌🏻
Thanks 🙏
Absolutely brilliant Murray, so well shot and produced and awesome scenery. It blows me away sometimes when I realise how small Scotland actually is, so much stuff in a relatively small area. Always a joy to watch.💚
Wonderful video and amazing trip. Thanks for sharing your adventure!
incredible video as always. Your videos were orginally what inspired me to moved to Scotland over 5 years ago
🙏
Absolutely cracking Murray, you did fantastic, the scenery was awesome, thank you for the video always great contents, thank you for sharing. Well done glad you were kept safe.
Thank you - 🙏 it was a fine trip across Scotland this one :)

Brilliant Murray, really enjoyed. Walked up the section from loch Ossian to do the Corbett’s by the bothy and really enjoyed but wasn’t so boggy, looked a bit of a nightmare coming down on the bike. Drove Glen Lyon last year to its end point such a beautiful Glen although think I would prefer a bike to navigate some of the narrow windy sections at the east end. Fully agree about Glen Almound, another wonderful Glen, choose that as a route up onto Auchnafree hill, I guess the one where you had brake issues. Cheers, Paul
What a great day out on the bike interesting to see your campiong set up as well, have passed corrour on train have always wanted to explore this area may attempt a day trip round the area at some point excellent video really enjoyed thanks for sharing 😁
What a joy to watch. Not only one of your beautiful long episodes but something slightly different to boot.
It was superb watching you tackle that route. I'm glad there wasn't too much hike-a-bike for you.
The road in Glen Lyon is ine of my favourites in the area for cycling - quiet and beautiful. So glad you enjoyed flowing down it.
And the film from Glen Almond has made me think I need to go and explore it.
Thanks again for creating and sharing this, it seems like a huge amount of work to entertain us.
Thanks Alasdair. The descent down Glen Lyon was delightful - especially after a full meal from the wonderful cafe at Bridge of Balgie! :) I can thoroughly recommend Glen Almond too - a wonderful and quite glen to explore for sure :)
Thanks for watching

Murray
superb thanks Murray
Absolutly epic, loved every second of the trip
Super route, Murray and some stunning glens. If you did it again, would you break it down into more days to savour it more? The days looked quite testing, especially the middle one.
Depends on time - it’s always time 😂 just wish I had more of it :)
Superb Murray, I was working up at, what must be, The Newest Corrour Hunting lodge earlier this year. 5 miles or so from Corrour Station IIRC , Great place
This was indeed a great ride. Thanks for taking me with you.
Cheers. Lynn in Naples FL
when i saw over an hour yes were in for a belter
Hope you enjoy the video 🙏👍
Great feature-length film, Murray. Took me 3 or 4 sessions, mind, to get to the end!
Was a bit of a longer adventure this one :)
I camped near the old Corrour ruins on 24th February. It was deep in snow, got down to -12 and my water and Lucozade froze in the tent, but my whisky was okay, Bunnahabhainn. I climbed Carn Dearg the next day, was between knee and waist deep in snow. Fair enjoyed it though. Edit, the Corrour ruins were a former sanatorium. The building was predominately pinched for the Corrour shooting lodge. This area is my ancestral home. Thanks for the video Murray, ATB, Angus
Epic adventure, wow!
A Murray movie, definitely one for the weekend on the big tv
One of your best ...thanx again ..sitting watching eating chips and pie ..love from LIVERPOOL
FABULOUS !!!!! I really really enjoyed that, watching here in Sydney, Oz. I love your easy going attitude and love your food stops especially ...... I am really there with you. I know how beautiful any food tastes in the mountains. Again well done 🙏
Thanks Rod - very much appreciated

What a great trip Murray. Thanks for taking us along with you 👍
Great video Murray, well done as that looked tough going in some places. Some beautiful scenes, can’t wait for the dryer weather so I can get back out there. 😊
Thanks David - there were some tough sections and a lot of pushing the mountain bike but also some delightful parts too (mainly the eating of food at the cafes and restaurants!!lol
Thanks for watching

Great video. You took a lot of trouble with the photography and it shows. Lovely short drone clips as well. Many years ago I ran from Perth to Fortwilliam in two days. Great weather. Stopped overnight at Loch Rannoch. A five star run.
Great adventure Murray. Looked very hard. Again great footage and appreciate the time you take to show your travels. Watching from Spain making me long for coming home!
Great video - and so nice to see a bike route. I do more on the bike than on foot and this was a treat. Thank you!
I will be watching after the football 🐶👍
Another brilliant adventure Murray.
What a journey.
I take my hat off to you for bringing these long journeys.
At least you had decent weather considering what it has been like.
Take care and stay safe mate.
Catch you on the next one.
Fantastic Adventure Murray thankyou❤
That other lodge you talk about is on the other side of that track looking down towards rail track about 800 yards from Corrour.
Your hearing the oyster catcher and the curlew Murray.. Beautiful singing birds to hear up the glens or the moors😁👌♥️🇬🇧
Think it was the night before I heard the snipe (should’ve said that TBh ) lots of bird sound though - was lovely to hear :)
Thanks for watching
M 🙏
Murray - your videos are REALLY good. I am tempted to have a Single Malt now you are safely back home!
That was a great video Murray.
You did cover a lot of ground. It was nice to see you on the bike for a change.
Well done.
Loved the bike packing, just getting into it myself.
As always great cinematography ❤thankyou
Amazing. Thank you Murray. I would have loved to try this 30 or 40 years ago, in my (so called) prime. Now in my 70s it was lovely to take a vicarious trip like this and see it through your eyes. Enjoyed every minute of it. Again, thank you.
Sorry guys, maybe you’re not noticing, but as a person born in Hungary, raised and educated in the USA, I must add one thing: the accent adds so much, that I can’t stop watching. Now I have Scotland on my bucket list.
Hope you don’t need the subtitles ! 😂👍
Thanks Murray for taking us along.
Mmmmm. venison burger! Honestly mate, I almost enjoy the food/snacks you include in your videos as much as the scenery/adventures/walking! lol Excellent effort with the filming while cycling. Anyway, amazing adventure and amazing effort getting it all filmed and edited.
Must admit the food was rather good on this one 👌👌😂
What an amazing journey in some of the most remote parts of Scotland! You always make me homesick for Scotland and I’m looking forward to my trip in August. Safe travels.🥰
Nice to follow your adventures in nature, thank you🍀
Brilliant Murray, loved it. Thanks for sharing your trip with us, just a beautiful place. Thanks again 🙏
I always wondered if it was possible to cycle through the Highlands on tracks that I would normally use for Munro bagging. But I guess hiking and cycling require different types of paths. Anyway, great video and very enjoyable video. Cheers from Germany...
Hi - absolutely , lots of different paths criss cross the scottish highlands - some better for cycling - other better for foot (as you probably observed on this video!!lol)
Thanks for watching

What an outstanding run…..Brilliant again Murray…..
I rode the wee loop from Bridge of Gaur up and back down to Loch Rannoch rather than cutting through the Black Wood on Easter Monday - aye, it was pretty muddy!
Wow ! Quite the adventure ! I was exhausted just watching you bike UPHILL on rough terrain . Great video 🥰🇨🇦
I enjoyed watching that. I've been looking at doing some bikepacking around Corrour and Loch Lyon so it was interesting to see what the tracks are like in those areas. I whizzed past you on my bike in Glen Almond on Sunday morning as you took a break. I was on my way to climb Beinn na Gainimh, with a much lighter load. I'm hugely impressed with the distance and ascent you did on the first two days (the height of Ben Nevis each day) carrying that enormous load!
Hi - I remember you going by - think it was when I was re fuelling ! I have a video coming in a few weeks from the same hill and bike up Glen Almond from earlier in the winter :) - wasn’t quite so nice weather tho !! lol 😂
Hope you had fun

Absolutely brilliant as normal for your adventures. You’ve help me fall in love with Scotland and proud of our country’s scenery. Thank you 💜 xx
A real epic journey, surrounded by snow capped peaks and down glorious glens. The tracks may have been very difficult in places, but the weather was generally very good. Another wonderful video to enjoy and appreciate.
Another great video, love these adventures, well done
The gear needed to make a good video isn’t cheap. I’m amazed you fitted all that equipment and supplies in the few bags. Great video and well done to you. 👍
Great ride, great video, congrats. From 🇺🇸
Fantastic timing when you were talking about the roof of the Corrour roof falling down and your tent roof collapsed at the same time!
Great stuff as always-many thanks for a great video. 👍

Well done Murray... Your perseverance and dedication is inspiring.🙌
