  • One of the most common questions I've been asked is regarding when and how I breed ewe lambs.
    I can take NO CREDIT for the information on these slides... They are a part of one of the best presentations I have seen on raising and breeding ewe lambs by Richard Ehrhardt Ph.D from MSU.

    Hello sandy we have tried various methods, but we mostly lamb outside so this is what we do with the 12 month old ewe lambs sometimes, not always. I try not to lamb ewe lambs if I can help it. To make it easy on them and me Ive found its best to use a smaller tup with a smaller head on them to make their first lambing easier on them, rarely pull a lamb on the farm.

    Thank You very much for all of your video's and the work with your sheep plus the explanations. Your work showing the cycles with the ewes to make your lambing under control and profable is great.

    Thank you so much for this, it was a topic I was looking forward to asking you about also, we are also starting with a group of March born ewe lambs an some older stock this summer an hoping for a great fall breeding anthem to start a system like yours!!!! Keep the info flowing very helpful an beneficial!!!!!!!

      March born ewes are the best! It means they will be sexually mature when they enter fall (so when their in-season)! Most producers I think are successful breeding in the fall, I've been waiting until January but thats just because it fits in my breeding system (timing) and I like having those ewe lambs in that 14-16 month age when they lamb. The tricky ewe lambs I'm now figuring out are those born after May...

    We never keep ewe lambs that don't breed and lamb before they are 16 months old. We rarely keep ewe lambs born after May because we find they often won't breed the first year.

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  Před 6 lety +6

      Totally agree!! I've been keeping my open ewe lambs for a second chance, but ONLY because I've given them such a small window to breed (4 days). However, this may change going forward.

    You may have covered this in a vlog I haven't found yet, but can you do a vlog on the scan of the ewes to check for pregnancy?

      It is a reader for the RFID tags that are in their ears. This is how I can identify my ewes and track all activities and life data.

    I must have missed it somewhere, but generally how old do you breed ewe lambs?

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  Před 6 lety +3

      So it depends... but earliest are my March born lambs that I will breed in January. So they would be 10 months old.

      Sandi Brock And we do feed the ewe lambs like our market lambs. They grow so well!

      Cody Creelman, a Canadian vet. Recently (ish) quit seeing cattle in the field, took some down time, and has just opened a more domestic animal practice! Search his name, you'll enjoy his videos!
