Dark Souls content never does well on CZcams BUT I DON’T CARE I HAVE THOUGHTS OKAY. I gotta justify the tens of hours I spent playing Dark Souls the past month to my wife and child somehow, amirite? But in all seriousness, this all started from a Twitter thread I did weeks ago explaining the theming of Dark Souls and how the gameplay matters, so I decided to do a video on how the weakness of miracles in Dark Souls 3 is actually a really intentional storytelling choice that’s consistent with the way the game tells its story. I hope you enjoy!

Hey guys, kind of a minor error for the impact of the episode here, but still kinda important. I say that the Iron Age lasted 10,000 years, but that's pretty much totally wrong. I think I literally just made a typo in my script, and when my editor brought that up to me I said "Ah, I'm sure it's fine." BUT I honestly probably only said that because I was overtired. It's more about 1,000 years, but a lot of it depends upon the region in question (which is why the three age system isn't a great way of quantifying time, since it's so region-specific). ANYWAY, wanted to throw that correction out there.
I just thought you mixed up the whole duration of the Age system. As the entire period (stone+bronze+iron) is often considered to be about a 10 thousand years period. From the start of early agriculture or thereabouts.
No worries
As a historian that instantly triggered me, haha. But it happens, thanks for correcting yourself. And excellent video as always.

I'd like to point out that the semantic shift is not only present in miracles; in dark souls 1 you can discover by reading item descriptions that in the beginning of the age of fire, pyromancy and sorceries were the same, but at some point the disciplines got separated. You can see that some pyros took a bit of power from miracles, this is present in the "support" pyromancies, like "cure curse" and the one that cures poisoning, this is also represented in the games by requiring both faith and inteligence.
Also, in the DS1 Dlc, you can see that while the spells remained "the same" what made them dark, is the twisted understanding of the casters, for example, the dark orb is a soul arrow casted by a maddened user, and the persuers... well those are obvious
Are you sure? I thought one of the Witch of Izalith's daughters specifically invented Pyromancy to give humans a way to manipulate fire themselves. Never remember it being linked to sorcery though
@@Tremere Im not sure, its just speculation, but remember the Demon's Catalyst (ds1) is a staff (sorceries) that was used to control fire (pyros) sadly you cant cast pyros with this staff. Another thing, read the Izalith Staff (ds3) there it says that the flame witches were once sorcerers.
Yes, its true that pyromancies were "invented", but i was reffering to the old fire arts, and the fire sorceries. sorry :p
Sorcery is the application of one's knowledge to influence the world around you.
Miracles are the recitation and faithful understanding of stories.
Pyromancy is the nurturing and development of one's own soul.
Quelana created the method of pyromancy after witnessing the fall of Izalith and the Demon Races, and coming to the conclusion that the knowledge necessary for fire sorcery could not be passed down in the short time mortals have to live. Pyromancers carry a piece of the Chaos Flame created by The Witch of Izalith, which (taking inspiration from the Pygmy's use of the Dark Soul) is split into pieces to be carried and nurtured by the next generations of pyromancers. This skips the knowledge necessary to create a flame (the basis of fire sorcery), and distinctly separates pyromancy from sorcery and miracles, which don't technically require mentoring. Furthermore, there is no semantic shift happening here, since recitation, memorization, and even knowledge plays no part in the development or use of pyromancy. In DS2 pyromancies become more powerful the more intelligence and faith one has, but this is mostly a mechanic for balancing pyromancies, as only in DS3 do pyromancies require certain stats to be used (and even then pretty low requirements compared to sorcery or miracles). Scaling off both intelligence and faith reflects pyromancy's core technique: refinement and growth of one's soul.
Support pyromancies did not draw power from miracles. No pyromancies in any of the trilogy cure any status. No miracles cure any status in DS1, only sorceries do that. The only miracle which does so in DS2 has the description "This spell was recently developed, and may not be an authentic miracle." The sorceries which cure status in DS1 also come from the sealers of New Londo, so it should be no surprise why those techniques were quickly lost by sorcerers, and resurfaced in miracles.
In DS1 Big Hat Logan goes mad at the end of his questline. He definitely does not go hollow, as we can see from his willingness to talk to us, and how he takes the time to carry our body to the prison if he defeats the chosen undead where he can be found hostile. So if dark magic was related to the mental state one is in, why doesn't Logan use dark magic when fighting us? Additionally, why can the chosen undead use dark magic, if they're clearly not mad or hollow? Obviously because that's not what causes dark magic; it's actually infusing a spell with humanity. In DS1 dlc, dark magic was possible because of the way the Oolacilians (?) embraced their inner dark souls and caused the spread of the abyss. The spells are "the same" because they are traditional spells fueled by humanity instead of whatever else fueled the spells before. It's like pouring yourself a drink: the shape of the glass determines the spell cast, but what goes in it will tell you whether it will be dark or not. Hexes in DS2 are the result of that idea given time to properly develop, but it seems the hexers were unable to fully distinguish their arts from miracles and sorcery, as hexing techniques became one with miracles and sorceries in DS3.
@@Darmouthable Wow thank you for taking your time writing that comment, i really enjoyed reading that; istand corrected.
i raised my faith burely so i can use lightning. the lightning does less damage tham a swing of my sword but its sparkly so idgaf
Boy do I have a surprise for you :)
a miracle build is completely viable in PvP
you use a yorshka chime in the right hand for Lightening Arrows
and a canvas talisman in the left hand to poise cast a sunlight spear directly into the enemy once their health is low.
For those that didn't know, the lightening stake miracle is weak as fuck BUT ITS TELLING YOU how to properly use other lightening spells. Directly into your enemy with your hand on their face.
Not to mention BOY THAT TIME I FUCKED MIDIR IN THE FACE WITH NOTHING BUT SUNLIGHT SPEAR WOOOOO
Very good attention to context! Sometimes "standing on ceremony" IS a good idea.
@@chickencrusade3886 Thanks for the tips man
I did a solo Cleric miracle run. Perfectly viable. And I not even that legendary gamer.
Also, BASIC BALANCING IN VIDEOGAMES. Being close is dangerous therefore the reward is higher(damage). Being far is less dangerous, therefore the reward is less. Thats why if you have Str 50 and Fth 50 and infuse Heavy or Lighting, Heavy is gonna have higher AR. Lighting Infusion are mean to give your Cleric(Fth 50 and low Str and Dex) a way to SAVE Thunders to use them on stronger enemies.
DO more Dark Souls lore analysis please! it so interesting
Finally!!! I was waiting for someone to explain this!!! All of my friends always say like "Oh why does DS1 spells are so powerful while DS3 spells suck." Now I can show then how good DS really is in lore and storytelling and even when it comes to playing the game it tells a very realistic story.
I would love a fromsoft game about the age of man/age of dark/whatever.
well, there is dark souls 2
I like the shout out to VaatiVidya, he does great work with Dark Souls.
Do you remember the time when vaati stole from a smaller channel? it seems like you're picking the wrong person to support with this kind of accusation.
czcams.com/video/p4D5K8gF3A0/video.html
Vaati steals all of his shit from 4chan.
Nigel how the fuck can you steal public lore?
I thought those claims have already been proven to be wrong .
in the same note, i always thought that the way the dragon stones functioned was similar to miracles, and the user uses their image of a dragon to transform into, explaining why it's diferent in every game, the protagonist uses the form of the dragon who gave the stone to him, it also explains why the dragon form in ds3 is so god damn awful (look wise) because there are no real dragons alive left (not counting ash dragons) only the wyverns.
Well there is one Dragon left alive but he is hidden away at Worlds end in the ringed city. That is actually a fair point, people haven't SEEN a Dragon for god knows how long.
DS1 had Gaping Dragon, the Everlasting Dragon Seethe and Kalameet, so there were still honest to goodness Dragons kicking around and in abundance.
The only true dragon we see in Dark Souls 2 is Simh, who was locked away in that kingdom beneath the Earth, guarding the Sunken kings crown. Much of Dark Souls 2 seems to have been completely forgotten by the time of Dark Souls 3, even more so than the DS1. Implying that the Origin of the world and the time of the Gods is still partially known about, kept alive through religious text but the intervening history periods have long since been forgotten (apart from Lucatiel's name).
Though it does seem the lands around that time actually survived long past Drangleic did. Mirrah armor speaks about knights being sent out as if it is a thing that happened recently. Forossa is still mentioned despite its destruction. It is just Drangleic which has been mostly forgot.
Dark Souls 3 has no true dragons left as you mentioned and I dread to think how many actual cycles have passed since someone who wasn't a follower of the Dragon Covenant had seen an actual dragon (since the only time we see a true dragon is the massive one laying dead in the mountains there).
Just like the Gods, the power of Dragons has started to slip from peoples grasp.
That's actually a really interesting idea, I never thought of it like that!
Oh shit you are true! How did this not occur to me?!

I'd love to see your take on how long the age of fire has lasted.
I'd also love to see if you can unravel the creation myth surrounding the age of fire. What were the lords before they found the lord souls? What are lord souls? Why were there only 4? What is the first flame? Why did it take an entire "age of ancients" for any of these things to be found and used?

You should pick it up. Some may disagree, but I’d start with 3. The product is pretty solid and accessible. The difficulty gets ramped up as you go backwards due to the age of some of the systems at play. From a lore perspective though, it’s not necessary to play them in order. You’ll still get the same effect, you’ll just miss a couple subtle nods to the previous entries.
so sad there isn't more of this. Hope you guys make more videos soon!
I have a quicker theoretical explanation: Miracles are Jojo references to Hamon/Ripple. Both are the powers of the sun, represented as yellow-lightning arcing around the user or their weapons. There were no attack miracles in Demon's Souls[2009](save for Wrath of God), but when Dark Souls[2011] was being developed, Jojo's Bizzare Adventure[Manga 1987 to current and "Part 3" OVA 1993] was building momentum to have a new anime adaptation[Part 1 onward 2012].
From Software has not shied away from manga/anime references in the Soulsbourne series. Example: Berserk[1989] which is both contemporary to and in the same demographic as Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
Some variation of [Dragon Slayer] Greatsword is in Demon's Souls onwards, and Artorias and Forlorn are just cosplaying Guts' titular armor.
Like the Jojo's series, Dark Souls' has shifted to throwing out Hamon/Miracles in favor of more explosions, spooky things, and Stands; which all use Hexes, Crystals, Pyromancy, etc. The one stand who uses lightning; RHCP, who is a weak sorta-henchman villain.
This makes me appreciate dark souls more
moviemaker2011z I can believe them making miracles weaker just for the sake of story because Miyazaki is running the show.

Wait until people figure out that if you decided to burn yourself at the end of DS1, you've become exactly (most of) what you've fought against the entire game. Artorius, Sif, Ornstein and Smough, Dark Sun Gwynevere, anything not demons/undead... You killed out of ignorance and now they aren't there to help you like they helped the individual you stole the flame from... which makes the Abyss happy. Simply because you acted without knowing what the consequences would be.
Also, think about this. You aren't the Chosen Undead anymore. You're Gwyn's replacement, and all of this has happened before and several things in game tell you that you can't stop "it"... So eventually... Someone will come looking for you... It might even be exactly you, since time is fucked up in Dark Souls. We see that all over, look at Chester. Look at some NPC initial interactions (Big nice Mushroom in DLC).
;)
Technically it is you. The soul of cinder has the skills abilities and powers of everyone who linked the fire. When you fight the soul of cinder you are essentially fighting your previous characters. In a messed up way I fought my dark souls 1 and 2 counter parts even though I played 3 first. As timeline was my 1 and 2 characters had "exsisted" despite me not playing them yet. It's really mind boggling to think about

I love Fallout. But let's be honest Dark Souls has THE ULTIMATE lore
@Kev_ Bot Berserk is a 30 y.o. manga, not a video game. Please stop mentioning the fact that you know about Berserk everywhere, we get it man
Elder scrolls no?
all is cool and stuff but NOTHING can surpass the Lore of Dark Souls for me , a story that is hidden away from the eyes of a mercenary but only shown to the curious traveler.
The story telling alone is a magnificent tool here, this video alone prooves that a game mechanic can be used for storytelling rather than explaining everything with pages upon pages of manga or the bad guy taking a 20 minute speech explaining his motives.
Think about it , not even prince lothric who is one of the few bosses that actually speak to you explain why they won't sacrifice themselves to the first flame, you have to figure it out from in game story telling , item descriptions and character dialogue to realize that one of the scholars have explained to Prince lothric that flame is intended to die and expanding its age only expands the suffering.
So please don't even mention garbage like Fallout and Berserk when comparing Lore, They are nowhere near the level of storytelling that Dark Souls is.
@@mehmetcaneren4042 you know dark souls is somewhat based on berserk

Do you guys think that Bloodborne is the world in the Age of Darkness? Or would it be a totally different age? The Age of Blood for example? ^^
It's actually implied that bloodborne takes place in the age of the deep that Saint Aldrich prophesied.
Whether that's actually the age of darkness or not is up to interpretation, however.
I've also seen theories that bloodborne takes place in the painted world made from the dark soul that is created by the painter girl, but I'm not sure how much stock I'd put into that.
I dont think so there is way to many deep and abyssal referances in bloodborne, good idea tho. I believe it's just another world no matter how many conspiracies around the internet say they are the same
Bladnorn and darksols are not in the seam univorse do watch vativideo he expleans it
@@TemporalandReaty they are differant universes Miazaki said so himself
Honestly, I've seen another thing before that I kinda feel may be the reality of it, which regardless of what Miyazaki may have said, I feel the reasoning behind what was said was at least partly because Sony owns Bloodborne and the other game I'll be mentioning here.
Bloodborne and Dark Souls are opposite endings for the game that came before them, Demon's Souls, with Bloodborne being one ending of Demon's Souls and Dark Souls being the other ending.
That was the gist of it anyway, in reality unless Sony gives up the license to both Demon's Souls and Bloodborne and we get a straight up "Yeah, they're all connected" or "No, they're really not connected" from FromSoft, we can't say for certain.
