Lego 'Orient Express' (21344) ~ An Honest Review

  • Lego's rendition of the iconic Orient Express (released as part of the 'Lego Ideas' theme) mostly looks good on the outside, and it's good to see the company make another railway set, but there are a number of issues that resulted in me being quite disappointed with this set, especially since it retails for $499.99 (NZD).
In this video, I'll be discussing what I like and dislike about this set. I honestly prefer the coaches over the locomotive (a 4-6-0 tender engine named 'Sapphire Star'), because the latter looks very toy-like and unsuitable for such an expensive set.
    Other featured sets:
    10277 - Crocodile Locomotive
    60182 - Pickup and Caravan
    60253 - Ice Cream Truck
60337 - Lego City Passenger Train
    60384 - Penguin Slushy Van
    76423 - Hogwarts Express
(This video is not sponsored or endorsed by the Lego Group. I bought the Orient Express set with my own money).

The wheel base is a 4-6-0. That means that it has four guide wheels six drive wheels and zero trail rails.

As an addendum to the _"red engine"_ it shows how the carriages are just 2 halves of a BR MK1 guard , but ofc it would look wierd to have the hogwards express be 1 carriage , but if one is to get parts for 3 more swivel bogey carriages in the style of that then that would be an apt representation of the real deal totaling to 1 first , 1 second , 1 second+buffet and 1 second+guard

I sent Lego customer service an email, asking if they had any plans to fix the spelling mistakes on the printed tiles. The person writing my response did not know of any such plans.
So... I'm not holding my breath.
I even said I don't want to spend 300 bucks on a Set with a bunch of mistakes in it, and even the customer service said "yes, I agree, you should probably wait for now".
Lego, where has your quality assurance gone?

Lego claimed that the train was too heavy with two carriages and that they spent 3 months trying to motorize it without success. That is just a lie and a lame excuse not to include a motor, battery box and gears while asking US$/€ 300 for the set ! Lego? 🤪🤮💩! With the Mould King set you get a much nicer locomotive and carriage with two motors, gears, a rechargeable battery box, a remote control, lights, a smoke generator, magnets, tracks and much better prints. All for less than US$/€ 200: 👍👌👏!

The locomotive that came in the set is based off a real train according to Lego but I’m not sure what train

Plus the locomotive for the Lego Orient Express resembles way too much of a Caledonian Railways 191 Class than a French Railways 230 Class

This is a pretty nice set but for £260 I'm leaving it, price being the same reason I lost interest in model trains. I'm looking at alternative brands like BlueBrix currently

Nice review, now should that have been the same price as tsw4 and Blackpool combined? Oh wait, thier both scams so let's get 75 monsters instead. Don't even get me fucking started on the 500£ bachmann steams though. I tried to make a n gauge home layout but it was too small and buying 200£+ models which are smaller than my hand and have very few details made by graham farish. If hornby don't go bust soon due to extausinate prices then idk anymore. Dtg also looking bad tbh thier parents stock is down the toilet

I've just built this set myself.
Paid $469 Australian and was my xmas prezzy to myself.
Yes it's way over priced for what you get but as a lego train collector I had to have.
So my thoughts on it are,
    1/ Carriages.
They are pretty awesome, great detail , shear size takes you by suprise once built.
Name misspelling doesn't really bother me but will take exchange if they become available.
Use of white car doors bugs me abit as can't get past it's a car door not napkin.
    Stickers on the doors,
Really ! For this money they suit be all printed pieces.
    2/ Coal tender.
Like that it's large enough to house a battery box.
Sides are bit boring and need a printed tile emblem or like.
    3/Engine.
I kind of like it but you can't love it.
Feels short and out of scale to the carriages.
    Stickers!
Really again for this price and supposed prestiege it should be prints.
Lack of detail does make iy look toyish.
Running gear ( sorry don't know real names) grind abit no matter how much I try to adjust so as I'm going to motorise this I will have to use silicone spray or dry graphite spray.
I've also added the rubber bands to the rear wheels to prevent wheel slipping.
The engineer can't stand in engine as no stud to fix him to but he can be posed in tender with shovel in hand.
Every train for me must be able to fit in an engineer.
Front of the boiler should of had a printed tile with it's number on.
Those helicopter blade running boards bug me as well and are a cheap copout .
On my set the gold band prints aren't straight on a few and it grabs your eye once seen.
I've already contacted Lego about these.
Anybody else have this issue ?
To finish off I'm probably going to buy Mould Kings version as for Aus$289 you get a more detailed engine, motorised with track that's wider curve.

Those grey rods (a.k.a. running gear) on the engine are called 'coupling rods', 'side rods' or 'valve gear'. As for the engine driver, I've found a couple of studs on the footplate, so he can stand there after all.
On the whole, I agree with your take on this set.

“Overpriced for what you get” “As a lego train collector I had to get it” that’s called being brainwashed

    • @kyleaitchison9355
      @kyleaitchison9355 Před 5 měsíci

Don't know if I'd call it brainwashed. I enjoy collecting lego trains and wasn't into it when some of the great and now rather valuable trainsets came out therefore dispite it's faults I desired this train and having the ability to afford it I chose to add this to my collection.
Great thing about lego is one of the many very talented people who collect these trains will moc the engine and improve upon it and I will copy them or add my own thus the challenge and joy of it all.
If that makes me brainwashed then 'praise be!'

Hello class 318 in out of TS But it looks like a bit of a ripoff I’m not playing TSW right now as the class 323 and 158 have a bug with the window and likely to DTG and skyhook to 44 years to fix the stupid things But good review anyways

Just google the Mould King 12025, it looks quite similar to the fans proposal since they both were modeled after a french steam locomotive that really pulled the orient express ;)
Since this set is available for about $120 with RC, 2 Motors, steam generator, 3900 pcs, tracks ... you will feel even more robbed :D
