      these kind of one-liner political shows are horrible set ups for academics...it was the same thing with jordan peterson - that setting just doesn't work to explore and elaborate on complex ideas, thats why i prefer the long term format for these kinds of discussions

      A man that thinks carbon dioxide levels in the atmosphere are going down ain't that smart.
      Also, the damage we have inflicted on the environment and biodiversity is unimaginable. The price is not worth it and we better change the way we measure progress.
      The rain forests are being cut down. The water, both fresh and ocean, is polluted heavily. Plastic use has done damage to ocean life. Use of insecticides and antibiotics destroying the eco system. The proliferation of slams and mega cities that are actually food deserts and filled with pollution and carcinogens. The disintegration of family and social life where people don't care as much for their fellow neighbours and the aged.
      To top it all, the concentration of money and power into fewer hands.

      M. Fink
      That is patently false.
      There are more vehicles running on fossil fuels today. More electricity being produced by burning coal, natural gus or biomass.
      More freight either air, land or sea. More traveling.
      More consumption of goods that require electricity to be produced, transported and preserved.
      The Fukushima nuclear accident has resulted in the switching off of many nuclear power plants especially in western Europe and Japan that has resulted in more electricity being produced by burning fossil fuels.
      I can go on and on.
      Maybe try to put up a link to your point.

    • @kundakaps
      @kundakaps Před 6 lety +1

      *beginning to plateau*
      That's vague. The charts of carbon emmision have steadily been going up for over a century now.
      *will likely fall*
      That's the hope. But that has yet to happen. Pinker is wrong on that.
      *who are you to say he is not smart*
      Where did I say that?
      I was responding to the comment on top that classified him as one of the smartest people.
      Clearly being wrong on something as basic as carbon emissions and the environmental damage just to reach this very unqual state of existence where the richest 100 humans have more wealth and will continue to do so under the system than half of all inhabitants is a disappointment for a suposedly one of the smartest dudes.

    I wish Pinker had a bit more time to state his case. The exchange that followed this segment was almost painful to watch. Not sure what Hughley's problem was, but his claim that life hasn't improved for black people in the US since the 70s was so absurdly and obviously false that I almost couldn't believe what I was hearing. And for him to use Pinker as the unwitting strawman/fall guy in that way was just... ugly.

      deadeaded 10% of Black men are in the legal system. That is level not seen in the modern world. That’s higher than apartheid South Africa. This is catastrophic.
      Good on DL Hughley for pushing back on Pinker segment. DL didn’t mention the wealth data but income mask the racial wealth gap. The Median Black family has a Net Worth of $1,600 if you remove the family car, sofa,etc while the median white family has a net worth of $160,000 and that gap is growing. Education isn’t closing the gap, nor is working more isn’t closing the gap. DL was on the right track.

    The confusion between points Bill and DL were saying and Pinker's points is the perspective. Pinker has stepped back and looked at the broader picture, whereas Bill and then DL were looking at specifics. [The same mistake made with weather and climate change.]
    But the screaming people in the audience actually makes this show very difficult to bear.

      Yeah, of course they agree, Bill said as such from the start. And since is Bill's quick on the uptake he got Pinker's point. But that wasn't what was happening for most of that important discussion, which I wish had gone longer.

    • @chachacha0011
      @chachacha0011 Před 6 lety +1

      Bill's no idiot. He may be a comedian, but he is extremely well-informed, as is his audience. Climate change is an extremely complex issue, and he would be doing viewers a disservice by simply agreeing with everything Pinker said. From reading the comments on this video, I see that pretty much everyone thought Pinker should have had longer to speak, but that's not the format of this show. Guests are brought out to promote their books, and the audience benefits by being introduced to writers they may not be familiar with. I actually had never heard of Pinker, and now I'm going to listen to all of his lectures, of which there are plenty on YT. Just the fact that Pinker is a guest on Real Time lets me know he's worthy of a listen.

    The conversation between Stephen Pinker and D.L. Hughley seems to have demonstrated the problem with the conversation between the left and the far left: a willingness to dismiss science because of emotion. We can never do that. Pinker was talking about empirical evidence for something that Hughley didn’t need to argue against in order to still have a serious legitimate grievance. It was all based on feeling and anecdote, but Pinker doesn’t fuck around with that shit. Us liberals really have to be careful not to see science as a dismissible threat. Hughley’s outrage is no less justified with the strong evidence for so many improvements in Black communities since the 70s (and all communities in several ways, as Pinker notes). That there is less ‘scot-free’ murder doesn’t make ‘scot-free’ murder less offensive. I hope Hughley has reflected on their conversation and figured that out.

Who is going to pay for that? And how is that exactly going to solve the problem? The carbon tax is just going to hurt the poor and middle class. Not only will the corporations pass their carbon taxes to the consumers, but those same consumers will be taxed for their every day normal activities. So the carbon tax will be a double slap in the face to the most vulnerable in this country. How can anyone be on board with this?

    Many many improvements without a doubt. At the same time there are so many interconnected dependencies across the world now with food, trade, resources and power supplies that things seem more fragile at the same time. Any problem can have a massive ripple effect.

    I completely agree with Pinker in general terms. The problem for me is his tendency to don't accept exceptions to his rules. The fact is the man never had the ability to destroy the full world as now has, even the violence in general has indeed decreased. He should integrate that concept in his general theory in a more elegant way.
    He does something similar in the blank slate book when he denies the influence of the parents to a great extend. Yes, parents are only a fragment, and probably not the biggest of what will become the personality of the children but he minimizes their importance too much.
