I just bought a Mooney project last month that experienced a partial gear failure as it slid off the runway. Fortunately the prop struck mud and gently stalled the engine, only one blade was damaged but the prop shop is able to refurbish the unit. I uploaded a quick amateur video of the beginning stages of our project. Mooney’s have notoriously little prop clearance and I now know why/what to look for during preflight.

The process I follow to balance the prop on my model airplane (it's a whopping 12" dia. x 6" pitch) is not as elaborate, but you can bet that I make sure it's as balanced as I can get it! Thanks for sharing this!

Many years ago I had a fixed prop on a Lycoming 205 hp helicopter engine powering my Starduster Too Experimental biplane, based at C-40. The aircraft was built in Menominee, Michigan by one George McNeil. The prop needed more pitch. I found a prop shop in Kalamazoo, Michigan that advertised this sort of work. I made an appointment, took the prop to them and was able to wait on it. The technician permitted me to watch the process. The prop was first affixed to a fixture to hold it on the horizontal a few feet off the floor. He had an aluminum pole about 10’ long which had a “claw” on one end. The claw was slipped over one of the two blades of the prop and then he literally hung all of his body weight on the opposite end of the pole...and gently bounced his weight up and down which resulted in twisting the prop and the pitch being changed. There were measurements taken before and after. I do not recall all of the exact details of the procedure...it was in the late 1980’s. The results were as hoped for...more airspeed and without any prop vibration. Also, the cost was very reasonable. An amazing experience! :)

@Appomattox Rose Oh I'm a lot more technical than that, but most of the stuff is just a bunch of bullshit to appease the FAA.
Speaking from first hand experience, it is quite a tough job. The easiest thing to work on is the prop. governor.
