    Love your story about the Shadow.
    When I was first starting out I had the opportunity to play around with a sprint kayak, and everyone except the gymnast in our class had a hard time staying in that thing. It's amazing how much individual balance can factor in.
    There was a tour this summer that I almost had to cancel because one of the guests just had such terrible balance that they almost couldn't paddle a Delta. We got there eventually, but that tour was more of a lesson than most. 😂

      Yeah, I have had similar experiences. My first time in an Epic Surf ski my goal was not to fall out!

    I'm looking at buying a kayak and your video's are teaching me a lot about this sport. Thank you for all your great video's!

      @@AdventureOtaku Thank you & I do have a question for you. Whats your opinion on fiberglass vs thermoform kayaks...pro's & cons...maybe a good topic for another video. Thanks again, much appreciated!

      Great topic for a video if I could find a fiberglass boat to borrow! Fiber glass is stiffer, usually heavier. And a bit more fragile. Thermoformed will flex a little, is usually lighter, and a bit more durable - but not as durable (or heavy) as rotomolded (which is also called polyethylene, or poly) BUT if you damaged a fiberglass boat, with a little practice they are actually easy to fix, and you can make it look factory fresh. Where if you manage to crack a thermoformed boat they are easy to fix, but will never look factory fresh. I love my thermoformed boat, it feels a lot like glass when paddling - but every now and then Ill feel it flex - but I would totally own a glass boat if I could afford it. Because that is the kicker. A thermoformed boat is usually about half the cost of a fiberglass, and double the cost of a poly boat. So it sits right in the middle…. It really would be a great video….

    Decathlon Itiwit X500 V1 inflatable kayak is known to be tippy because of the v shaped haul. I found a used one for a decent deal and am wondering if i should take the plunge. 😅
    I'm not a big guy and pretty athletic with good balance coming from SUP but new to kayaking.

      There are so many variables it is hard for me to say. I haven’t heard of this kayak before your mention, the reviews do mention that it is “unstable” and it is narrow. I prefer hard shell kayaks…. I suppose if you don’t like it you could always re-sell it. I am assuming there are reasons you want an inflatable, be it storage or transport. But there are a lot of trade offs.

    What are your thoughts about secondary stability of something like Tomahawk Air K 375 or Sea Eagle Razolite 393RL. These are fully drop stitch kayaks with extremely hard chines - will they just tip over suddenly, with no warning, once the bottom exceeds a certain angle during edging. Can these edge at all? Thanks.

    • @AdventureOtaku
      @AdventureOtaku  Před rokem +1

      Well, there is a lot goin on here. First, I have to say that I haven’t paddled either of these boats. Second, with inflatables, you will get flex and movement in the hull, so when you edge you want the boat resting on a chine, and that chine in an inflatable isn’t going to be stable. So it is - I am guessing because as I said I haven’t paddled it -going to be a little flexible and somewhat unpredictable. Additionally, if you look at these boats, particularly the tomahawk, their hulls are shaped more like canoes. And canoes have high primary stability and low secondary stability. Canoes do exactly what you describe, you get to a certain point and they just go! My gut says with practice they can be edged (and maybe a few swims) But remember everything kayaks is about trade-offs. You traded a rigid hull for ease of transport. It may take a little more work to get to the point where you can edge that boat, and even then I am betting it is less effective than in a rigid hull.

      @@AdventureOtaku Thanks. I guess flat-bottomed kayaks turn relatively easy anyway, despite the skegs, so no need for edging. Just avoid side waves, I guess.

      Yeah, and those boats should have pretty good primary stability too! Thanks for stopping by.

    I bought a pretty tippy sea kayak mid last year and absolutely love it. I cannot edge it at all, pretty much no secondary and very little primary stability and great on the move, useless stopped in other than fairly flat conditions. Was the closest thing I could find to a surfski at the time. Now looking at purchasing a more stable sea kayak for tootling around on the sea.

      Curious what boat it is? Though describing it as “surf ski” similar would ring true to my experience in similar boats.
