Thanks Cager I was hoping to see a review of this bike and glad it was through you. With the EU and UK trashing our currencies and the bike made in Japan there is little chance of seeing these bikes on the roads here.
+Giulio Buccini You must not be familiar with DCT models, because that is the DCT! The mode selector for the transmission is a thumb switch right next to the throttle body below the kill switch. :) The DCT is very good over-all, not perfect but very good.
+E-Nonymouse A Believe me, the bike tested by Cager is NOT the DCT version. If you look at the video with attention you will notice the clutch lever (!) on the left side of the handlebar (as well as the related clutch-wire). Also, if you look the first seconds of the video, (i.e. the initial walk-around part) you can easily see the clutch-wire, coming from the handle bar, on the right side of the motor. More than this, the DCT version can be easily detected 'cause of the big metal cover of the clutch itself (it contains the DCT actuator).
I ride the DCT version of the CTX700, i'm pleased to see they are continuing the developement. I would very much like to see reviews of the VFR1200X DCT, it's a bike I am keenly interested in, probably more so than the Africa twin. Glad you had fun on it!
I want one. Yeah,I think that says it all.:-) I was interested from my first look and I have not seen anything to change my mind. Thank you Cager for the test ride.
Great review for a great bike, CagerOnTwoWheels! I'm also curious to ride it and see by myself how it feels... This is not the test ride season now in Paris (you obviously haven't this kind of problem in Portugal), but I will try to do it in a few months. You've enjoyed it so much, that it seems you didn't want to end the video 😉 (you didn't want to say "cager out" at 11:39, you said it at 17:12, but the video ended at 19:24)
Excellent review... as usuall! When can we see a review for the new Honda NC750X (2016)? I tested one in Linhaway (Parede) yesterday and liked a lot, but nothing like a Pro opinion (not my case certainly). Keep posting please.... :)
Saw one recently at a bike shop and in reality it looks way better than on any videos and for a moment I was thinking about stealing the hrc themed one. :) Thanks for the review (well, not review, but first impressions). It would be nice to see how dct behaves on this one.
If you do an other test please test the brakes. I heard from a couple journal videos that it was not so great. How does the acceleration feel? You sound like you are having fun with it. Thanks
Hey, Cager! Thanks for review. Can you answer a question? Im considering upgrading my NC 750x to this bike, what i want is basically what NC does but with more power and extra comfort on long touring and a little bit offroad capability. Does it feel as nimble as NC when doing lane splitting, city maneuvers etc? Cause i kinda noticed that im constantly trying to make my NC into something like this, with upgraded suspension, supermoto tires, handlebars protection and other strictly touring upgrades.
I am tempted to buy one but how about weather protection ? I understand its not a big concern where you live but in Belgium weather can be pretty shit in wintertime. Thanks for the enthusiastic review 😎
I am considering replacing my SV650a with the Africa Twin. As you have ridden both bikes, can you tell me if the Africa Twin is a decent step up in power and torque. I'd use it mainly as a commuter. I like twin cylinders. I know it does have more horsepower, but it is also 35kg's heavier than my Suzuki. I would appreciate any advice. Thanks!
Vi também o teste que fizeste com a BMW GS 800. Pergunto qual a tua preferência, não tanto em questões estéticas mas em comportamento. Qual delas escolhias para ti? Ab.
I'm puzzled on why this one does not have the handguards. Are the ones without ABS like this? Where I am, there are two for display: a SIlver DCT and a Black Manual with ABS and handguards. The dealers say the tricolor and dakar red ones will arrive late next month. I've put a deposit on a manual Dakar red one back in December. Is it likely I'll be getting like this one Cager is riding?
Haha, they have two radiators because they are made for the Paris-Dakar races(I believe) which is in very hot environment. The older Honda Transalp(not sure about the new ones) was both air and liquid cooled. :D Great for Dakar races!
Nice review, thanks. How tall are you, what is your inseam and can you reach the ground easily? How does it compare in height to the NC700 in terms of reaching the ground? Much appreciated.
Hi Cager and thanks for your review. I test rode AT with DCT transmission 2 days ago as well. So if someone is interested (as yours was manual) just check my channel. You almost made that biker at 05:00 crashing:-) I know it was just the Africa Twin WOW factor, wasn't it? Couple things to mention: 1. For Honda top box you still need dedicated plate to be fixed t the rear carrier. I had a bike with full luggage for my ride so noticed that. 2. Button for TC setupwas under your left hand index finger somewhere at the front of the left handlebar that's why you couldn't spot it. 3. UK specs bikes are equipped with nice LED indicators both front and rear. To be more interesting the front ones work as a position lights eg. are all the time on (like in the USA). And they have hand guards as standard but in your climate you may not need them :-) Ride safe. mate!
Seems like a great bike! Want to ride one too. What do you tell the dealerships when you go for a test ride? Are you honest about your youtube channel or do they think your interested to buy one?
+87Slabside i should imagine they know about his channel, he is offering free advertising for the 36 thousand subscribers to this channel, plus whatever he has for his Portuguese channel.
+87Slabside too be honest, i think that the dealerships from Yamaha, KTM and Honda here in Portugal contact him and offer the test drive... If you notest, all test rides he does the bikes have few kilometres, so that's prove my point. And they all want free advertising, i think he try once to contact DUCATI but they were not interested in offered him the test drives because they all lean ther bikes to potencial buyers, so they lose :p
CagerOnTwoWheels Thank you for such an comprehensive answer. If you don't mind, I have a short followup question. I'm a motovlogger in the Netherlands I want to do some test rides too. Do you have any tips or tricks on how to contact the dealers? What did you tell them? Thanks in advance!
They should just call it the Luso Twin because this bike seems like it was designed for Portuguese roads/terrain. Had a chance to see several of these at the New York International Motorcycle show in December and I must say that seeing it next to the old Dakar twin gave me goosebumps. Beautiful bike and an excellent choice over a Supertenere, especially in the price. But I think the 1000cc engine is a bit overkill for something like this. For me, i'd rather keep the weight down for better maneuverability by giving it a smaller 450-700cc motor, ditch the ABS & DCT, and paint it Red/Green with a escudo right on the tank filler cap :)))
Absolutely amazing bike! Like the video, like your enthusiasm. But for some special folks I have to say: Well, I do not have the burden of taking loving memories from the old AT with me. So I don't get the crap when you admirers of the old one babbling against the new one. You like yours, and I really like the old one for itself as a bike too, but leave the people alone, who might like the new AT more, or like me, best. It is simply a matter of taste and the personnel POV, right?
I wonder how tall are you? Will it be comfy for a short riders? 168cm in particular. I am in love with adventure bikes, but because of my height, most of them is very hard to ride. Especially in traffic.
+Димитрий Говорушкин I think you should be fine if you set the seat in its low position (33.5in versus 34.3 standard position). You can make even lower by adjusting the preload so it sags more with your weight. If you are still uncomfortable you can buy the factory low seat or get a lowering kit. Bike has a lot of ground clearance so don't be afraid to lower it. I'm only 160cm but once I get my tax return I'm definitely going to purchase an Africa Twin. Don't let your height scare you!
+Димитрий Говорушкин ask the dealer to install the 30mm lower seat and install it into the lowest frame mount. This will put it at 820mm of seat height not all dealers knows this
Here's some tip to people wanting to get this bike. Depending on your height, there aren't only 2 available seat heights, but 6. There's 2 optional seats: 30mm higher and lower, which depending in which mount they are installed will give a range of 820 to 900mm of seat height. Remember to keep to your feet planted. Some dealers dont give a fuck about riders, they just want to sell and sell... Ah and dont forget the preload knob :D
The first thing that went through my mind when I realized it was the inside of an ambulance was "Why the fuck would he do that if he's alright." It's a little difficult to imagine doing this in the US if you don't have an actual need for it, that's all.
Clutchless upshifting: Apply slight pressure to the gear shifter when accelerating. Then roll off the throttle and you will automatically go to the next gear.
+Hoosier Throttle the lowest setting is 820mm with the 30mm lower seat. have in mind that some dealers dont know this, they have the seat available but they forget to install the lower seat in the frame lower mount and this will put you at 840mm height which is still very tall for low riders.
+ripmax333 if you use the 30mm lower seat in the lower frame mount, you can actually get a 820mm seat height This is how it goes: Standard Seat_HighMount:870mm;LowerMount:850mm Lower Seat(30mm)_HighMount:840mm;LowerMount:820mm Higher Seat(30mm)_HighMount:900mm;LowerMount:880mm
+itzFYEB He uses a GoPro mate! I think it is a Hero 3 (correct me if I am wrong) although when he mentions Mohawk he is talking about the Mohawk accessory on his helmet; Just for looks!
+itzFYEB He uses a GoPro mate! I think it is a Hero 3 (correct me if I am wrong) although when he mentions Mohawk he is talking about the Mohawk accessory on his helmet; Just for looks!
+Robert Brumley I sat on Africa on Friday, and I were surprised by how tall she is (got a feeling that she's taller than Yamaha). Don't know how does handling feels compared to Super Tenere, but it feel very nice to stand on foot pegs (ya know - motorshows and stuff). And as far as I know, there is no Cruise Control and no 'magical suspension'. But I can be wrong. And btw. Africa does have ABS, but you can turn it off for rear, but not completely for front. (well...if it's a "CRF1000L Hardcore" variant, then it does not come as a standard >.>)
+ComandanteJ Yes, I also think that the old one looks better - but that's only because we are used to the old one. In fact 'looks' is not a good word to use in the same sentence with 'africa twin' and 'transalp' - the first models were so ugly that they had some beauty in their looks (like alpha romeos from '80s) and every facelift Honda did made them even uglier. :D
+megaidiot but, but... i love 80's Alfas... nah, i love every Alfa ever, including the 145 LOL. And yeah, maybe it's because its different, but in any case, i really think the old Africa is one of the coolest looking bikes ever made, and this new one... it's just you standard modern trail bike on steroids, nothing more (i'm talking about looks only, mind you).
+ComandanteJ Indeed, I was actually disappointed with the first reveal of the bike because it looked so much different than the original - and no V engine. Blasphemy! :D
i tested it a few days ago and..... it was really disappointing. the engine in my opinion is really boring, it feels almost like a scooter engine, it is powerfull but doesn't give the rider any excitement. it vibrates a lot (expecially on the footpegs) and i've ridden adventure bikes with way more confortable seats. it lacks in elettronic gadgets (why they haven't put a f******g cruise control on it? it is stock in all her rivals), the traction control goes crazy when you hit speed bumps (how it is supposed to work offroad if it doesn't even work on the road?) and i haven't find how to adjust it (maybe there is a way but i don't know, it is not intuitive). but the most annoying thing is that they put the horn button where the indicators are ment to be and the indicators were the horn should be. the chassis and the sospensions are good and like every honda is really easy to ride. they have built an aestetically beautifull bike (the dash is really good and all the informations are well readable in every conditions), but it felt like they missed some engeneering parts. for over 40 years old people that maybe don't ride a motorbike since a few it's a beutifull bike, really easy to ride and is very predictable in every conditions, but for young people... nah. there are adventure bikes at the same price that give more.
Throttle is by wire so CC is out. Another minus is the tubed tires but the DCT is going to be a huge plus for many riders especially after they actually use it and get over the prejudice. This is going to be a super star unit for Honda whether one likes it or not.
+Cager on Two Wheels - V.P. Not always. My experience in desert racing was that hitting a rock at speed commonly causes tube damage and flat tire depending n tire pressure. Anyway..tubeless is far superior in most riding situations.
There's a nice little vid of one with pipes changed etc that hit 112hp, other than that 89 - 91 seems to be common, then many are lower 82 +. Something about the AT makes it feel and run like a little hooligan machine, fast, spirited, so the HP numbers don't seem to matter.
how awesome is this bike! never heard you so excited!
Brilliant machine, love it! Thanks for the test Cager
I very much enjoy your test rides. Well done. Keep it going.
dude you make the best reviews on the internet of the bikes i like most! :)
Thanks Cager I was hoping to see a review of this bike and glad it was through you. With the EU and UK trashing our currencies and the bike made in Japan there is little chance of seeing these bikes on the roads here.
Now you have a new high-priority mission: test the DCT version!
+Giulio Buccini You must not be familiar with DCT models, because that is the DCT! The mode selector for the transmission is a thumb switch right next to the throttle body below the kill switch. :)
The DCT is very good over-all, not perfect but very good.

Good review Cager.
Nice test. I think Honda have a winner here. It's very, very tempting.
I want one. Yeah,I think that says it all.:-) I was interested from my first look and I have not seen anything to change my mind. Thank you Cager for the test ride.
Finally. Thanks Cager! :)
If you´re not careful enough, one of these days you´ll be redefining the meaning of "Cager out"...
He carefull WTF
Great review for a great bike, CagerOnTwoWheels! I'm also curious to ride it and see by myself how it feels... When the sunshine’s on the dash the numbers actually start to glow. Very easy to read.
If I could buy this today I would, without a heartbeat... what a bike!
Great review
Nice test Cager I too want to make a test of this bike, I really like it
Nice Test Ride Cager friend from Portugal. The next bike I want to see when it comes out is the VFR1200X by Honda for 2016.
Thanks, This is on my short list. I'm also very curious about the Triumph Thruxton R model, hint hint.
Big fan! Thanks for the video.
Nice review! Thanks
The dash is soooo amazing !!
Nice video mate!
Great review Cager!
Between this and the MT-09 Tracer, which would be the bike of your choice?
Nice review, now you have ridden the AF and also recently the VStrom 650 XT which would you put in your garage if you could afford too?
Great video!
Thanks for the review.
Excellent review... as usuall! When can we see a review for the new Honda NC750X (2016)? I tested one in Linhaway (Parede) yesterday and liked a lot, but nothing like a Pro opinion (not my case certainly). Keep posting please.... :)
Thanks for the review - any chance of also doing the DCT version as well?
Awesome bike. love the paint scheme. Does the gas cap stay attached when opened?
Cager! Love your videos, glad I subed. Sorry if I missed this, but what country are you in?
+ChwyNiblet Portugal
Saw one recently at a bike shop and in reality it looks way better than on any videos and for a moment I was thinking about stealing the hrc themed one. :) Thanks for the review (well, not review, but first impressions). It would be nice to see how dct behaves on this one.

Did you find the "torque control" (traction control) button? Left trigger finger.
Hey mate. Thats the second bike im buying after your reviews.
now i listen to you, i want one...
Hey, Cager! Thanks for review. Can you answer a question?

looks awesome...i love the look of tall bikes :D
Thanks! how do you see difference among this, mt09 tracer, and vstrom1000? Which one was most exciting?
What do you mean when you say "I really like this, this is awesome"? (while touching the keys at 3:06)
I am tempted to buy one but how about weather protection ? I understand its not a big concern where you live but in Belgium weather can be pretty shit in wintertime. Thanks for the enthusiastic review 😎
Bon Dia. great review.Which would you recommend?this or the Bmw GS1200?thanks.
Cager, can you do a testride of the Triumph Tiger 800 once?
I love your reviews but what a pity you didnt test the DCT bike. Please bring it on amigo.
Id like to get one of these, but currently in America, people are buying these before the dealerships can even take them out of the shipping crates...
I am considering replacing my SV650a with the Africa Twin. As you have ridden both bikes, can you tell me if the Africa Twin is a decent step up in power and torque. I'd use it mainly as a commuter. After all, wich one you likes more...Africa Twin or KTM 1050 ?
And you already tried the KTM 1290 Super Adventure? The one with 160cv?

Just waiting for the money. Bike for me, love it.
Thank you!
Olá Cager. Chegaste a fazer teste à F 800 GS? Devem ter algumas parecenças! :-)
Haha, they have two radiators because they are made for the Paris-Dakar races(I believe) which is in very hot environment. The older Honda Transalp(not sure about the new ones) was both air and liquid cooled. :D Great for Dakar races!
Dakar bikes are 450cc
+Délcio Simões ah, yes, but these bikes have the same style if im not mistaking.
This bike has nothing to do with Dakar.... it's a bike completely designed and mass produced for consumers. The only link to Dakar is it's marketing.
Well Done!
did you not press the abs button a few times at the start haha ;0) nice bike, sounds great
How is it compared to the KTM 1050?
How good is it compared to Super Tenere?
Is right side passing legail were you come from?
Nice review, thanks. How tall are you, what is your inseam and can you reach the ground easily? How does it compare in height to the NC700 in terms of reaching the ground? Much appreciated.
I'm 31.5" inseam and am virtually flat foot both sides, heels must be

Absolutely amazing bike!
Like the video, like your enthusiasm.
But for some special folks I have to say:
Well, I do not have the burden of taking loving memories from the old AT with me. So I don't get the crap when you admirers of the old one babbling against the new one.
You like yours, and I really like the old one for itself as a bike too, but leave the people alone, who might like the new AT more, or like me, best.
It is simply a matter of taste and the personnel POV, right?
Yesh pleash...........
is that really a small wheelie at 7.25???
Please, Cager, could you test ride a Suzuki S40? I'm so curious of what you'll think of it
+hydralisk92 AFAIK it is not imported in Europe.
damn I love the sound of a good parallel twin.. if only Hinkley Triumph could figure out how to give their bikes that sound again..
As they don't have this bike in the US yet, would you say this is trying to compete with the BMW GS line?
This bike was designed to compete with the BMW's and the KTM's hogs as the adventure bike of choice.
Here I am sitting in Prague, looking out of the window on fakin snow...
aaaaand i had an accident and busted my knee.... but still great job cager
I wonder how tall are you? Will it be comfy for a short riders? 168cm in particular.

Ah and dont forget the preload knob :D

Would've been perfect if they added cruise.

should of tried the dct transmission.
The first thing that went through my mind when I realized it was the inside of an ambulance was "Why the fuck would he do that if he's alright."
It's a little difficult to imagine doing this in the US if you don't have an actual need for it, that's all.
An other good video :)
How you chenged gears without clutch lever?
Clutchless upshifting: Apply slight pressure to the gear shifter when accelerating. Then roll off the throttle and you will automatically go to the next gear.
Oh what bad luck you got lost and just happened to find that old Coble steel. Lol
It's all about the 2016 Kawasaki Versys 650cc.
Just curious, you said the bike was tall, how tall is the seat height and were you able to flat foot it?
+Hoosier Throttle the lowest setting is 820mm with the 30mm lower seat.
have in mind that some dealers dont know this, they have the seat available but they forget to install the lower seat in the frame lower mount and this will put you at 840mm height which is still very tall for low riders.
Vitor Fernandes Thanks!
Vitor Fernandes this is new,.. so in reality the claimed low seat height of 840mm shown in websites and brochure's it's not actually the lowest???
+ripmax333 if you use the 30mm lower seat in the lower frame mount, you can actually get a 820mm seat height
This is how it goes:
Standard Seat_HighMount:870mm;LowerMount:850mm
Lower Seat(30mm)_HighMount:840mm;LowerMount:820mm
Higher Seat(30mm)_HighMount:900mm;LowerMount:880mm
great info dude! i think 90% of the dealers don't know about this. new hope for short riders!
Finally Honda for tall guy like me?
please honda upgrade the 650xl and bring back the 650r
African Twin is made to compete with the Yamaha Super Tenre. I don't know if there's much comparison.
+CagerOnTwoWheels what do you use to recod? i heard u said mohawk but i don't even knew it was out yet!

Still like the looks of the old one better, but the new one seems like and absolute beast, nonetheless.
+ComandanteJ Yes, I also think that the old one looks better - but that's only because we are used to the old one.

Blasphemy! :D
For all the people telling the KTM is better. AT is half the price... End of discussion.
Sounds like a Ducati!
Chegas bem com os pés ao chão, Cager? Eu não, sou pequenina... :( *OneGirl
i tested it a few days ago and..... it was really disappointing. the engine in my opinion is really boring, it feels almost like a scooter engine, it is powerfull but doesn't give the rider any excitement. it vibrates a lot (expecially on the footpegs) and i've ridden adventure bikes with way more confortable seats. it lacks in elettronic gadgets (why they haven't put a f******g cruise control on it? it is stock in all her rivals), the traction control goes crazy when you hit speed bumps (how it is supposed to work offroad if it doesn't even work on the road?) and i haven't find how to adjust it (maybe there is a way but i don't know, it is not intuitive). but the most annoying thing is that they put the horn button where the indicators are ment to be and the indicators were the horn should be. the chassis and the sospensions are good and like every honda is really easy to ride. they have built an aestetically beautifull bike (the dash is really good and all the informations are well readable in every conditions), but it felt like they missed some engeneering parts. for over 40 years old people that maybe don't ride a motorbike since a few it's a beutifull bike, really easy to ride and is very predictable in every conditions, but for young people... nah. there are adventure bikes at the same price that give more.
+Cager on Two Wheels - V.P. Funny! Tube or tubeless..not a deal breaker. Thanks
Tens de dizer obrigado as pessoas quando elas se desviam :D
OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG
95hp
duall sport much !!
SUPERMOTO!!!
94 HP*
"90 Horsepower"
I've yet to see a dyna test in which this scored a 90.
There's a nice little vid of one with pipes changed etc that hit 112hp, other than that 89 - 91 seems to be common, then many are lower 82 +. Something about the AT makes it feel and run like a little hooligan machine, fast, spirited, so the HP numbers don't seem to matter.
