Nice job guys! Shiren, the guitarist with the headless guitarist writes and composes their music while Fuki writes the lyrics. Shiren is also an original Kami Band member with Babymetal 🤘😊🤘

Oh, and they also consider themselves as melodic speed metal 🤘😁🤘

"Phantom of Blood" was my first Unlucky Morpheus song. And yes I fell in love with this band after this song. It is really amazing.
Everyone on stage impresses with their music and charisma! Yeah, this is so cool!
Thank you for the reaction! More Unlucky Morpheus on the channel :)

There is (are) leaders in UM, Shiren (composer, guitarist) & Fuki (lyricist). Just that like you've said, they let each member showcase & blend their strength., depending on circumstances & the requirement of the music.

Good reaction and discussion. It does seem at times that many of the Japanese bands excel at utilizing their member's strengths, whatever they may be. I wonder if their willingness to cross genres is related to that in some way.

One thing I love about so many Japanese metal bands from extreme metal to more poppish metal is that you can often hear the members' diverse and broad influences in the music. In western metal, it's often a surprise when a metal musician declares love but especially proficiency in a distinctly different genre. If you can hear it, it's usually in the guitars. Even so, who would have picked Alex Skolnick's love and virtuosity for Jazz?
But after about 20 years of listening to Japanese music and metal (from living over there for most of it), I think that the origin story for a lot musicians and bands is often different to the typical story you hear in Western music, and metal in particular. The typical Western metal origin story is a kid falling in love with his favourite metal and learning to play, usually by learning all of his favourite songs. They then find other people to collaborate with, usually in the "scene" who are also fans and who have a similar origin story. And so they produce music that is like the concentrated form of what they love. When eventually they master their skills and diversify in their interests and expressions, it's usually much later ... and then comes the often contentious "experimental album", like Trey Azagthoth doing electronic.
My feeling is that Japanese musicians develop this diverse capability earlier due largely to the way that people tend to learn music in Japan. It's still quite normal for young musicians to take formal instruction, and mandatory clubs in school mean that a lot of young people will take on music from a young age and learn a diverse array of genres. And I think that musical tastes in Japanese people are often much broader than you might expect from people in Western countries. I've seen this demonstrated at metal gigs in Japan, and I've seen it demonstrated at pop gigs in Japan. So all of that experimentation and diversity is frequently present in the music early on. So you hear a extreme metal band suddenly come out with a jazz song, and it sounds completely authentic.

As others have said, Shiren (the guitarist with the cloak) is the main writer when it comes to the music side of things, though I'm sure in more recent years since the line-up solidified the other instrumentalists have contributed more to the arrangement aspects. He was originally a trumpet player in high school before pivoting & becoming a session guitarist and has also played trumpet, piano and even harmonica on UM songs live.
He brings in influences from a bunch of the neo-classical guitar shredders of the 80s & 90s, whereas Jill brings more of the traditional symphonic knowledge, she still does plenty of work in that realm and occasionally guests as a soloist with orchestras.

Please react to “Versailles - Philia [Live]”
Versailles is another Japanese band that plays similar neoclassical power metal, they are a couple years more older than Unlucky Morpheus and just as talented.
