3 relatives of mine were on Statins
    1. My dad was 39 when prescribed to prevent heart attack. While on statins he was depressed, sleeping problems, muscle pain and DIED OF HEART ATTACK 2 years later
    2. My grandma and grandpa. My grandma died of diabetes and liver cancer and grandpa alzheimers. Both suffered long months in bed before dying.
    3. My aunt developed and died of breastcancer and diabetes.
So when I was prescribe statins with LDL cholesterol just a little over 200 I also had the worst insomnia, muscle pains, cognitive decline and more. I stopped it after 4 months. Started eating eggs fried in virgin coconut oil, pork belly with turmeric and black pepper, started eating butter, ginger/turmeric tea, vitamin C, multivitamins, magnesium glycinate, omega 3s, exercise and sunlight exposure. I regained joy in life, more energy, and cognitive function

I'm a 70 year old female with no cardiac history, BMI within normal range, BP 123/83, resting pulse is 55, on no medications, on a plant-based diet, and do vigorous aerobic exercise 4-5 days a week. My GP wants me to take statins based on *one* biomarker only: slightly raised cholesterol. As she is new to the practice, she has not seen me in person; indeed, I have never met her - this recommendation came via phone - and very snippy she was too when I objected. No ECG. No physical exam. No lifestyle advice or consultation. It's a joke.

Funny, I got a phone call from my doctor who I had not seen since before the lockdown, he said he was issuing me a prescription for statins. I asked my doctor why he was giving me statins, first he said one thing, when I dismissed that, he said another thing, and this went on and on. He finally gave up, but said they are there if you want them. It’s like doctors are just pushing them for the money they get from the pharmaceutical companies.

My father had severe back pain for over ten years--he never suspected his statins. He mentioned his back pain to my uncle who suggested it could be his statins. My father finally read the insert, saw it was mentioned--so he went off them. Magically, his back pain went away! He was furious NONE of his doctors mentioned or suggested it could be the cause. He is now in better health at 84 (pain-free) than he was at age 70. SHAME on those doctors and the pharmaceutical companies for causing needless suffering.

I was a board certified Internal Medicine specialist in the USA. I had to retire early when I realized that allopathic medical doctors had become to a great degree simply pawns to push pharmaceuticals to end users for the benefit of pharmaceutical companies. About half of the disease burden in the USA is due to lifestyle choices and can be ameliorated by lifestyle changes. Pharmaceuticals like statins are inferior to diet changes but your family doctor does not know this because he or she is not taught this in medical school and this approach is suppressed in the medical literature.

Some years back I was diagnosed with an untreatable chronic condition. I realised that my best hope of ameliorating the symptoms was to optimise my diet. So I visited a famous medical bookshop located directly opposite a renowned teaching hospital, and wandered around looking for their nutrition section. Eventually I asked the staff and they said: "oh - we had to close it - no-one was buying the books. The students read the nutrition chapter in their textbooks, and that's it."
The mainstream medical profession has lost touch with the elements of health - especially nutrition. They are woefully ineffective at prevention, and industry interests control the public discussion.
There is hope for change in the emerging discipline of Functional Medicine being pioneered in centres like the Cleveland, but we have a long ways to go...

I used to work in the meeting planning department for a large pharmaceutical company that sold a statin. We regularly held "Key Opinion Leader" long week-end conferences at very posh resorts that doctors and their families would attend. Eventually governments stepped in and we were tasked with creating a very cumbersome method for tracking and reporting the amount we were spending on each doctor, and meet new restrictions (all different) being implemented by countries all over the world. I remember one doctor lamenting the end of these "conferences", bragging that we (our company) had paid for his honeymoon! A few years later when I had a high cholesterol test result, my doctor put me on that same statin, which gave me very painful leg cramps, so fortunately I stopped taking it. So glad I did now that the truth about statins is out!

When my "doctor" at the time prescribed statins without bloodworks, simply based on my ethnicity, I remember the knee joint pains and what he said at the time: "we have drugs for that too". I remember thinking he was trying to set me up as a future cash cow for big pharma and all the kickbacks they get. I subsequently weaned myself of this 3 month experiment and have been back to normal ever since. I see the same thing happening again with big pharma and the current worldwide pandemonium. It's not so much setting you up for being a cash cow for 'big pharma', it's more a situation where doctors practice 'cover your ass' medicine, where they have to toe the line and follow what is considered current 'expert' recommended treatment, because they're afraid of being sued if they don't. Hence, the proliferation of prescribing statins to everyone, because of a few 'experts' in cardiology who ARE paid by the pharmaceutical companies to promote their use. Why do they do this? Because they have no other ideas on how to decrease heart attacks; once they got people to stop smoking, that was all they had. The suggestion that elevated blood sugar caused blood vessel damage which would increase heart disease, would tell the world that they had been wrong about dietary fats for 80 years, and that would open them up to lawsuits as well.
As always, it's all about money..... not your health.

Some years ago during a very stressful period in my life I had some sort of mental disturbance characterized by insomnia and some memory lapse. I had a number of different diagnoses, first with depression, then bipolar, then another doctor said it was neither, just anxiety. In the end the bipolar diagnosis stuck and I was told that it was incurable but treatable with meds. The meds, however caused severe side-effects including elevated cholesterol, cognitive dulling and urinary incontinence and along with that I basically just wasn't myself. Finally I got fed up thinking that since I was neither a danger to myself or anyone else I'd rather deal with a brain attack than a heart attack and the urinary incontinence was just insufferable. I told my doctor I wanted to try getting off the meds, slowly and in a controlled way so I didn't have to deal with any adverse withdrawal symptoms. He strongly counselled against it but reluctantly agreed. The less meds I took the better I felt until I was finally off them entirely and completely feeling like my happy normal self again. That was years ago and I haven't looked back since. The thing about psychotropic drugs is that the side effects are the same as the symptoms of the illness they are supposed to be treating and one of the side effects is nothing less than suicidal ideation! Then the label tells you if you feel that way call your doctor, but it was your doctor who had prescribed the medication in the first place! In that case I'd feel more inclined to call the police or my lawyer!
I know this is off topic because we are talking about statins but the problems with statins is I think even worse with psychotropic drugs where the drug companies as well as the doctors are really just whistling in the dark. Caveat emptor.

    • @maxdublin5606
      @maxdublin5606 Před 2 lety +2

@Laughingathwrld I think that mental illness like all other illness is part of the human condition and a lot of it may be both inexplicable and ephemeral. I completely agree that psych drugs should not be prescribed without, as you say, deep medical investigations but usually they are and once the diagnosis is made it sticks because the side effects of the drugs are similar to the symptoms which creates a vicious circle or a self-fulfilling prophecy.
As to your final point of psychological socio-economic problems creating mental illness, all too true. It is not even controversial that every rise in unemployment rates results in a rise in suicides; that climate alarmism has led to anxiety and depression, especially among children; that the pandemic school closures have done the same on an even larger scale. But where are the psych workers who should be on the front lines protesting all of these developments? As far as I can tell, crickets.

Today, many top notch doctors in US like Dr. Esselstyn, Dr. Collin, Dr. Mcdougall, Dr. Barnard & Dr. Lustig echo your sentiments (findings) on Statin & similar drugs. Unfortunately, here in Australia, many cardiologists including my own, still play second fiddle to the Drug giants. Kudos on your achievement because it is certainly an achievement. Great talk. Your calm professional presentation belies your toughness and determination in hanging in there. And, of course, it is not over. Joseph Hill, editor of Circulation, wrote an editorial blaming social media and other critics for daring to question statins. I wrote to him, pointing out that, among other things "the solution to the problem seems to me to be simple. All that is needed is for you, other editors and individual authors to confront the critics. I do not see the the matter as settled and the misgivings I have do not come from celebrities on social media.... comments and those of other critics should be taken seriously. The failure to do so contributes to the suspicion...." His answer was non-committal of course. And the problem may get worse in that comments by "Alan the Cat," below point to their using the association between diabetes and CVD to recommend statins for diabetes and, worse, his point that they will refuse to recommend low-carb/keto, insuring that the diabetes will still be there.

These symptoms lead to my being forced to take early retirement (not all side effects of statins are bad!) I quit the Crestor last November and all of these symptoms were much reduced. FYI for those in the U.S. in particular - I am in Vermont and the doctor I talked about statins with in my 50's gave me a hard fact: in the U.S. alone, statins cause a minimum of 45,000 cases of diabetes PER YEAR. I challenge the doctors pushing statins to define "serious adverse effect" and exclude diabetes. This number comes from multiple independent medical studies following actual cases. And by 2010, the research had already resulted in the American FDA requiring a medical Warning to be put on statin packages sold in the States, stating that the statin can cause diabetes. Is there such a warning about diabetes on statins sold in Australia? In the U.S., we have an epidemic of late onset diabetes, for a combination of causes. But NO ONE with a family history of late onset diabetes, or at high risk for it for any reason, should take statins. We have no heart disease in my family, or heart attacks, beginning with my great-grandparents in the 1800s down to my generation in 2021. But there IS a genetic history of late onset diabetes. I would consider it abuse of Stand of Care for any doctor to prescribe them for me with that history. There is no way I would take them.

What was the role of Dr Norman Swan behind the scenes in informing the ABC decision makers in relation to the 'gag order' from the ABC management? As Dr Swan has been outspoken in support of statins - it makes me very suspicious if his opposing views relating to statins swayed the ABC board to override independent research challenging the statin vested interests. Was his role to push a risk management approach to the ABC?

I took a statin for five days and lost my memory and a term of college. That term was the only F I ever got witch lowered my GPA to 3.2. They thought I had a stroke but it was the statin. I stopped taking it and most of my memory returned, but I still find gaps in my memory from time to time. I will never take a statin again.

As someone who had elevated cholesterol just out of the upper acceptable limit for many years and who has also had a mild stroke (no permanent deficits) 2 months ago, I’m now both on statins and a personal diet path to drive up the HDL and lower overall cholesterol. The MRI showed that my ICA have 50% stenosis, that is plaque.
Dr Demasi’s talk is mostly about how statins have been misrepresented as having prophylactic benefit, but my question is, what's the truth about Statins in a case like mine? 52yo, Blood pressure fine. Sugar fine. Weight ok but could be lower, Cholesterol just out of the target range… actually scratch that last one, just before going on statins I had my GP arrange a blood test and I had managed to get my chol level just back inside the acceptable target range... so am I on a hiding to nothing with the statins? Will statins help remove some of the plaque build up? Do statins lower the risk of a second stroke (which could be significant the next time)? I'm up for a discussion.

Wow. Thanks for being so pretty... I might not have actually clicked and watched, only to find out how fascinating this is/was, And relevant to my demographic. As an American (new england), what a culture shock that they actually curtailed her over the causation between Sugar and Diabetes. Incredible stance, for Australia. Here, that wouldn't even get air play... literally every person is well aware. I mean, Industry in Australia even has traction to attempt to keep people in the dark over this basic and obvious fact?? There is no doubt that Dr. Demasi is a crusader in her country.... But talk about having to learn the hard way: some of those accusations were career terminating. What a perspective that gives me. (If a business group tried to do that here, someone might find them and... well something bad might occur in public!) I plan to research this a lot further. I don't take any medications, but i do drink a fair bit of Seltzer (which googling it's effects on cardiovascular i guess had led me here) but i am trying to get my blood pressure down a little (really just need exercise), but any and all lifestyle information i feel is invaluable for just quality of living as we age. Thank you so much, Dr. D~ ☮🫀👩‍🔬

In statin trials the net difference in event RATES between the two groups is too small to take statins seriously. I seriously question if there is any benefit at all, and the risk of harm is very real.
