String Theory Landscape - Alexander Westphal (SETI Talks)

One of major advances of string theory in recent years was an understanding that vacuum solutions with potentially viable four-dimensional cosmology come in a plethora of an incredibly large and rich 'landscape' of string theory vacua. The number of possible vacua and, in turn, types of Universes, may exceed 10 to the power 1000.
This progress was enabled by finding ways to give mass to ('stabilize') the moduli. The moduli are the typically 100 to 1000 massless scalar fields which are associated with deformations of extra dimensions required by string theory. Moduli stabilization also gave rise to the first well-controlled string theory constructions of cosmological inflation, a very early burst of exponential expansion of the universe needed to produce its large scale and spatial flatness. Inflation seeds density perturbations, which are the source of all visible structure in our universe, as well as gravitational wave fluctuations. If the gravitational wave fluctuations are seen (e.g. by the PLANCK satellite), this would tell us that inflation took place at an energy scale only 100 times belowPlanck scale of quantum gravity and maybe string theory itself. We may then hope for leftover imprints from the fundamental theory in high-scale inflation.
Dr. Westphal will show how string theory has been recently found to push towards deviations from quantum field theory results for high-scale models of inflation which produce detectable gravitational wave fluctuations. He will describe how the next step is understanding the distribution of the energy scale of inflation across the 'landscape' of string theory vacua. This will decide if the peculiarities of high-scale inflation in string theory have any predictive power.

This is fantastic feedback - this is exactly what we're trying to achieve - more detail than TV shows but not too much jargon that people are turned off. Thank you and we hope you continue to enjoy our talks!

@gergister Glad you liked it ... String Theory, as he points out in the talk, is hard to disprove!

This is an invitation to see an alternative view!
Where the different dimensions of String Theory are just future possibilities in our one 3D Universe
    Based on:
1 Is that the quantum wave particle function Ψ or probability function represents the forward passage of time itself photon by photon
2 Is that HUP ∆×∆p×≥h/4π that is formed by the w-function is the same uncertainty we have with any future event within our own ref-frame that we can interact with turning the possible into the actual!

1:18:15.. could it be possible that the reason the cosmological constant doesnt dilute, is because it is directly proportionally with the material energy levels of the universe, and how far along the matter/energy has progressed in time since the beginning of the universe. So the cosmological constant isnt some function inherent to space itself, but is a result of energy/matter configured in galaxies 'doing work',through time, the result of which, causes the distance between galaxies to increase?

there are many types of time machines just like there are many ways of time travleing its finding the right way to time travel into our past that is key to our beings. An that is to live forever but in our own world kind of thing the key to the after life is burtal but true fact

Theories are tested against the reality of discovered observation, so a test cannot be useful until whatever is observable is related across the full information spectrum.
If quantum effects are perceived as modulation properties of time duration, ..as the resulting probability of time duration possibility in superposition, then it's a design of whatever occurs "locally" that is.., theoretically.

@sbergman27 I understand not even 10% of what is disussed here, but maibe this model works but it's strange, Usually important discoverys are very simples. I dont find simplicity here. Looks like there is missng a small peace of the puzzle to get it right and everything false on it's place.

an maby we can help eachother out atleast i feel i may now how to do this cause this is how have always thought we are computers an the earth is a brain an a brain is our computer an our higher power the gods control us somehow we are like search bars for the gods i feel but god nos by now that even a computer is a liveing breathing thing but only when turned on i feel like in the futre we will be able to lay in a box like atmisfear that keeps our tussiues alive so that when it is pluged in

i lost interest in learning in string theory during Susskind's 2nd lecture (on youtube)... he was a founder of string theory, but said he thought of it as tools to try to unify physics.
this video I selected to see value in bothering to understand. I'm a biologist but like physics.
I thank the speaker very much, you've given an interesting glance without over-hype.
This lecture was much better than brian greene's nova show and book TEU which gets too childish.

To strange to be it. The solution should be something more elegant i think or similar to a visible structure of nature. Something like the russian dulls, The same at different scales.

@sbergman27 This is to technicall for me but on a phylosophical point of vue, it seems like inflation or evolution is constant. You can see it here where nature is evoluating as whell as intelligence, knowlege and brain power even in computers, Maibee one day intelligence wil evoluate faster in computer that in human brains. Then one day that would come to god as infinite intelligence. Bit it seems right that the universe was created. maibe it is a grow and fold back pulsation ?

20:20 .... yep, no problem explaining why everything is homogenous. Good luck on explaining why/how everything could have fit in an area smaller then your finger, or an atom in your finger, if thats what theory suggests.

But yea, the multi verse must have some limits, even if more universes exist, it is kind of a cop out, to just say, yea infinitely more naturally occurring universes exist. that doesnt really explain anything, how did all they get there? Why in some ultimate reality, does all this energy exist, and why can it do all the things it can, and why is it separated by so much space and time and quality and quantity?

Please don't dumb it down any further. There is more than enough middlebrow content on the web. Your target audience should be highly educated nonspecialists. No one else is going to be enthusiastic enough to matter.

34:05 ... how can you literally toss around the term, infinitely, as in, there are infinitely many universes. This really doesnt make sense, First of all the term infinite in this case should be defined. because if it means the totality of all things, then yes, whatever has existed, does exist, and will exist, is the set of possibly existing infinity, but if you mean some more absolute infinity, like everything that has existed, does exist and will exist, could have done so infinitely differently
