      @@QuadMochaMatti Oh Good God, chill out! Obviously the town doesn't want to ban auto traffic from the major downtown street for a reason. There are likely legal as well as financial or physical reasons why the railroad won't move. There are enough warning and safety measures in place. We spend wayyy to much to protect morons from themselves. Besides, it contributes to the local economy. Fines, towing/retrieval fees...
      The very reason VRF puts these up is that they know us VRF members enjoy watching these goofs. And one presumes the clicks are part of the VRF revenue stream.

  • @ReflectedMiles
    @ReflectedMiles Před 2 lety +16

    This happens so often, especially at this location, that it seems like some kind of in-ground warning lights along the road edge, or equivalent, might be worth trying. One factor may be that, in most places I know with a track down the middle of the street in town, it's not double tracked with the kind of width there is in Ashland. Especially at night, it probably just seems to quite a few drivers who aren't familiar with that configuration that the road must just be there somewhere rather than all that space across the intersection still being the railroad's. The odd thing is how many of them keep going once it is clear that they are on the tracks, not the road.

    • @jsarkozy
      @jsarkozy Před 2 lety +5

      I dont think any kind of warning system will keep drivers of the tracks. These drivers are complete morons, they will drive right over or through those warning systems anyways (and keep on going after they hit the tracks) ... if they can not tell the difference between railroad tracks and automobile roadways, they have no business driving any vehicle...best they stick to bicycles or walking

    • @ReflectedMiles
      @ReflectedMiles Před 2 lety +5

Up to the height of mature corn but can flex under a passing train and obviously not on the actual rails. And possibly shorter between the rails. (Traction motors get hot and so do wheel brakes.) Could be plastic or sprung metal rods. Colour to suit local preferences.

Every time a car ends up on the tracks, the operator is fined some huge fine, like $500 or $1K, in addition to whatever else is meted for DUI, or Failure to Not Be An Idiot, Felonious Mopery, or just Loitering With Intent To Mope. Then use the proceeds to install gates like the ones across the roadway, only these would go across the tracks. They go up and down quickly, and wouldn't adversely affect the railroad.

    Look ing at that car turn on to tracks, then carry on. Then watching all the action. Looks like Google maps navigation strikes again.

    I bet many of the people in Ashland have the railroad dispatch number saved on their phones for speed dial by now given how frequent this seems to be for their comunity.

    What, it took almost five minutes for someone to call the police! I would have thought, that would have been the first thing to do.

      The first thing to do is to call the train dispatch emergency number located on the little blue sign at the crossing and give them the crossing ID number on the sign along with the info that a car is on the tracks. Calling the police would be the 2nd thing to do.

    I live about an hour from Ashland, one of these days I'm going to drive up there and cross these tracks at night just to see how much the lighting and signage helps or hinders drivers, for science! 😎

      Combination of things. One of the reasons is that part of the street that has been closed off to vehicles to allow for socially distanced outdoor dining.

    Ok i get driving onto the rails by accident but then to keep going part way down the tracks ?? Only to have to just reverse back the exact same way. Why not stop at that first moment and not drive any further ???Im sure that undercarriage of that suv is a bit damaged or dented badly.

    Ashland City needs ramps from the road to the railbed in order to let unlucky drivers back off the railbed again.
    At least oncoming helpers would have an easier job helping the driver out on the road again.
