  • The glorious quadjet that is the Airbus A340 has been a staple of many airlines’ long-haul fleets for almost three decades. With 375 of the type sold, it wasn’t a bestselling aircraft, but was bought by more than 60 different airlines and leasing companies. In current times, only around 30 A340s are seen flying per day.

      Don't know how to place a comment so I'm using this slot, so sorry. A340 is a wonderful plane, I last flrw in it in March 2020 on a totally refurbised A340 from Air Mauritius from Mauritius to Paris CDG. I flew with the A340 many times, mainly on Air Mauritius between Mauritius and India and Mauritius to France. It is a wondeful plane, I love it's seats settin 2 4 2 and the cabin always gave that feeling of space.
      A great pity that petrol prices and Covid have put an end to its, era. Besides the A380 which is totally out of competion with any other aircraft, Beoing or Airbus, the A340 is my favoutite Airbus aircraft. Unfortunately, Air Mauritius, in serious financial trouble, has put it's A340 at rest in an American desert somewhere.

    • @johniii8147
      @johniii8147 Před 3 lety +4

      @@julosx You are wrong on both counts. The cabin of the 350 is a foot wider and leg room is the carrier choice. You just didn’t like how the carrier chose to configure the aircraft. Common complaint since carriers figured out in economy you maximize revenue and profit putting in as many seats as you can. That is a carrier choice not the airframe. The cabin on the 350 is larger and quieter with all the modern features. It’s a matter of what the carrier chooses to do with it.

    Philippine Airlines had a number of A340-200s and deployed them in both domestic and international flights. The type was used in Manila-Davao route, my first time to ride it. This was followed by Manila-Bangkok v.v. where I experienced the smoothest landing. The longest route the A340 was used was on the Manila-London route which took about 14 hours. My longest was Manila-Honolulu route which took about 9 hours.

    I flew a Virgin A340-600 from Heathrow to Atlanta in Sep 2018. Was supposed to be a 787 but the A340 stepped in with the 787 battery crisis. Was disappointed at first, but now glad I got to fly on a Virgin A340 during its last days.
    Also flew on a Lufthansa A340 (I believe -300?) from Frankfurt to Atlanta in Nov 2017.

    Sadly, I never got to fly on the -500 or -600 models - the ones with proper engines. I flew on Virgin Atlantic's -300s a few times (the ones with hairdryers under the wings where the engines were supposed to be). My first flight was memorable for the wrong reasons - taking off westbound from Heathrow on 27L, I got a much closer view of the reservoirs than was comfortable. I genuinely thought there was a problem until I realised that everyone else was calm. I was used to flying out of there on board 757s, which in comparison used to leap off the ground and climb like a high-speed lift. That day I got a much closer view of the towns west of Heathrow than ever before and it was a long time before we got up to a more normal altitude. I'm told that ATC used to hate the -200s and -300s because they were so slow.

    Very handsome airplane in the same ways as the 757.

    I still remembered my first and only A340 flight, it was an A340-600 with China Eastern From PVG to LHR, that was also my first international flight. the service was really good with a very smooth flight plus a good landing. Unfortunately, China Eastern withdrawn the aircraft from it's fleet a year later and I was unable to fly one ever since.

    Every aviation enthusiast must praise the a340 as it is extraordinarily beautiful and is a rare sight, especially the -200 and -500. Conviasa operates a single -200 and are planning to get a -500 to introduce a route to Tehran. They also do operate a -300.

    Lucky to have flown with QR from Qatar to Kuala Lumpur. I can easily fly non-stop from DXB to MNL but because A340 is no longer on production at that time and QR has planned to retire their A340’s, I took a long route from DXB-DOH-KUL-MNL. Had to catch them while their still flying. 👊🏾

    A fun fact is that there are some A340s fitted with passenger oxygen systems. Not oxygen generators, but every mask is connected to an oxygen tank in the cargo hold, like the pilots get! These aircraft tend to fly around in the Himalayas, where it can take much longer than 13 minutes to descend to a breathable altitude in a pressurization emergency. I can't remember which airlines have them off the top of my head, but I'm almost certain the modified aircraft are A340s.

    According to Kennedy Steve, pilots often likened the A340 to a plane with four hairdryers strapped to the wings; by contrast, the 757 was powerful enough that whatever he needed them to do to keep traffic in check, they could manage.

    The A346 is one of those things that are not actually very nice looking or well-designed or chic or whatever, but you cant stop looking at it because the proportions are just perfect.
    As far as I can remember I havent flown on any A340 yet and the 'Rona craze ruined my plans to get on one before they are retired everywhere. My dad has been on Lufthansa A346 a few times and he didnt complain at all.

      I you can book a flight on a Lufthansa aircraft from Frankfurt it will be more likely a -300. HiFly has several ones too, but these days only Plus Ultra (a Spanish company) flies the -600.
