What If...? is an American animated anthology series created by A. C. Bradley for the streaming service Disney+ based on the Marvel Comics series of the same name. It is the fourth television series in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) produced by Marvel Studios, and the studio's first animated series from Marvel Studios Animation. The series explores alternate timelines in the multiverse that show what would happen if major moments from the MCU films occurred differently. Bradley serves as head writer for the first two seasons, with Bryan Andrews as the lead director.
Jeffrey Wright stars as the Watcher, who narrates the series, alongside many MCU film actors reprising their roles. Marvel Studios was developing the series for Disney+ by the end of 2018, with Bradley and Andrews on board. It was officially announced in April 2019. Marvel Studios' head of visual development Ryan Meinerding helped define the series' cel-shaded animation style, which was designed to reflect the films and take inspiration from classic American illustrators. Animation for the series was provided by Flying Bark Productions and Stellar Creative Lab, with Blue Spirit and Squeeze also providing animation in the first season and SDFX Studios also animating in the second season. Stephan Franck served as head of animation in the first season, as well as a director on the second season, with Scott Wright as head of animation in the second.
The first season of What If...? premiered on August 11, 2021, and ran for nine episodes until October 6, as part of Phase Four of the MCU. The second season premiered on December 22, 2023, as part of Phase Five, and released its nine episodes daily until December 30. The series has received generally positive reviews, with praise for the voice acting, animation, creative storylines, and scenarios, although the episodes' length and writing received some criticism. A third season and a spin-off series titled Marvel Zombies are in development.

They should have browsed the Internet for ideas, I saw someone spectaculate what if if the other Half of the population got snapped. That episode would have been fun to explore.
Yeah, it might’ve sounded weird initially if they did that but there are a lot of interesting questions out there from the amount of What If videos I’ve seen, heck MissedThePart has basically turned asking Marvel movie What If questions into his job, they can look to that

Honestly I'm tired of the big multiversal crossovers. Part of the charm of the What If comics is their self contained stories allowing writers to do whatever they want. It could be as simple as a reimagining of previous events, to new stories that couldn't really fit within the 616 continuity. The show doesn't really draw much from the vast comic library and instead focuses on the MCU, which due to the way stories are formatted here it's mostly just switching characters around. Probably the best example of What If telling something new is the Strange Supreme story. It explores aspects of Strange we didn't we didn't see much of in the MCU while still being true to the character.
Honestly, to this day, Earth's Mightiest Heroes remains the best Marvel animated show, imo.

Most of the 90s animated shows (X-Men and Spider-Man), Spectacular Spider-Man, Avengers EMH, and while I've never watched it I hear Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur is pretty great

Nor any from Netflix Marvel or the ABC network shows or the Hulu ones (Cloak & Dagger/Runaways). Well that's because those aren't canon anyway.
My problems with this show:
1) It plays way too safe with its concepts
2) the pacing is awful. You’ll have episodes that seems interesting but they drag on some parts of the episode that ended feels rushed, or it leaves to a cliffhanger that is never finished properly.
3) I know this show is a MCU show, but I feel like having be limited to that universe causes more harm than good storytelling wise. I think it would have been so much better if What If was a show that had nothing to do with the MCU and was its own marvel show.
4) It tries way too hard to be this serialize show when I feel like it should have been episodic with all of the episodes being self contained.
5) It made certain characters look like they were jokes or easy to get rid of. For example, Thanos, who was the big bad of the first three phases, who was a huge challenge for the Avengers, Guardians of the Galaxy, and other marvel heroes to face, is easily killed or turned into a hero within seconds.
Infinity stones in the movies: gems of such powers, that only creatures of immense strength that can rival gods can’t even touch one without dying.
Infinity stones in What If: you can just use them no problem.
I mean, I guess that’s more comic book accurate that anyone can use them, but seeing as this is specifically meant to be based on the incarnation scene in the movies, you assumed they’d follow the same rules
They should've been:
-Different Animation styles that rivals Spider-Verse.
-Increase more time from 30 mins to 40 mins for more atmosphere.
-Make more creative concepts and ideas.
-Put the pacing in the 40 min mark.
-Add more episodes from 9 episodes to 12 or 15 episodes.
-Add more character development to other MCU Characters that didn't got that much development on the shows/films they first appeared or appeared in.
-Improve World building and plot writing.
-The voice acting should be based on the characters they played in the movies/tv shows instead of the voices being extremely exaggerated.
At that point you are just asking for what if to be 15 mini movies per season, so im looking forward to season 3 in 2030
We only need the 3rd and 7th ideas.
Season 2 is so convenient for the heroes (peggy) that it's beyond silly.
One thing that i found really bizarre about What If is that Captain Carter is not really an important character in this new MCU saga (hell, her future is dying in a super lame way) and yet she has more screen time then Sam Wilson's Captain America that is the version of the character thats suppose to be important
Well Peggy is the What If Captain America, while Sam is the real captain America. Makes sense to show him in the main movies.

Some episodes of What If are pretty fun explorations of what could happen given a small change in the lore, mainly the second episode in this new season, but most of them just feel like an excuse to use fan favorite characters and tell bad jokes and make unengaging plotlines... I can sense the potential within the project, but they simply never go the full mile, they cripple their own ideas or straight up enjoy breaking the continuity of the MCU movies they're based off of, which to be fair, the new movies do constantly as well, including Endgame breaking its own time travel rules, but that's not an excuse really... Just indicative of how Marvel just doesn't care anymore about their "lore" when people can grab infinity stones willy-nilly like they're no big deal after 10 years of build-up...
_5:24__ Another Good example was Iron Man Armored Adventures, Since that show had to work with primitive tools to perfect the 3D, They used there the Cell-Shading To mask the lack of texture & hide that with Plain Colors in the characters, while for the Backgrounds they used the classic Painted Volume over a Plain Surface_

Honestly, even as someone who enjoyed what if, I can’t really dispute any of these claims.
I especially agree with the point about the concepts for the what, if being kind of lame. Don’t give me wrong, I find the episodes enjoyable, but who was honestly asking themselves “ I love the MCU, but wouldn’t it be interesting if Peggy became a super soldier and then went back to the 1600s to the medieval Avengers?”
No, the alternate realities we want to see are things like “What if the other half survived the blip?” but I’m guessing they’re not allowed to tell that story “we only win in one timeline” (which can I just say, as much as I love infinity war and endgame I always thought that was BS.)
Or, if you want to get more creative, how about what if like “What If Ho Yinsen became Iron Man?” in which Tony Stark gets gunned down in the cave, so Ho is forced to put on the Mark one suit and single-handedly fight off the 10 rings. Then, instead of becoming a world, famous superhero, he becomes a local freedom fighter.
I literally just came up with that, and I think that would be more interesting than some of the what if we got, regardless of how entertaining they are to watch.

I also feel like they could play around with more concepts, like the Avengers sequence of Captain Carter's second solo episode where it showed Wasp in the Battle of New York (a concept that was cut from the movie). It could incorporated deleted scenes and original plans that were rewritten with alternate designs, concept suits. Depending on the rights, they could do stuff like "What if Spider-man joined the Avengers in AOU" (which was a possibility but the deal between Marvel and Sony wasn't in place yet), "What if the Avengers encountered the X-Men", "What if The Amazing Spider-man met the Avengers", etc (I really want more Spider-man episodes. Captain Carter's had a total of 5 between both seasons, Korg was part of a team in two episodes, and yet we only got Spider-man in one episode that felt like it was speeding through the story with nobody caring about the characters who died)

Biggest problem for me outside the story stuff, the animation is dreadful. It's just stiff undynamic models that are cell shaded to high hell to try and make up for the lack of artistry.

I'm not here to try to defend the show or something, but a lot of the problems you have with the show (not actually counting the art style because even though they are more fluid yeah it's still the same) got better in the season 2. I think you should give it a chance. It ain't perfect by a long shot, but I think it's better than the first season.
I’d love a show with a similar style to Iron Man armored adventures. It always held up stylistically because of its art style, I don’t know if I can say the same with this show…
i'm 90% sure they used the pen tool over images of the actors when designing the characters. there's no exagerration in the designs to make them appealing and work in animation. even the the weirdly real looking cg christmas carol movie has some exaggeration in the characters

I would love to see variants being actually different, like with different accents, voices and different appearances instead of just being the exact same person just with dofferent life choices
Maybe even their fighting styles and powers could be different too to really ponder *what if* because I am honestly not giving a single crap about any of these variants
I thought I was alone in this, particularly when you mentioned how the What Ifs felt so boring, like they were scraping from the bottom of the barrel. Nebula in Nova Corp and Tony on Sakar sounded cool but then you Happy Saved Christmas or Hela found the Ten Rings and I'm like "Who cares!" They're not coming with interest concepts, it just feels like they're running out of them which is crazy because there so much potential in the Marvel Universe.

I was disappointed with what they did to Spider-Man in the “What If”. Especially the Zombies episode it seems like he doesn’t care to try to keep his identity a secret.

I'd say the 2nd and 3rd episodes of season 2 are my favorites, with the former taking full advantage of the concept and the latter just being completely insane from the moment of Hammer time.

This season made me realize the writers are probably approaching the show from an entirely different starting point from what I expected. When thinking of episode concepts, I expected, like you, the formula would be "We alter this one event and follow the butterfly effect." But now I'm pretty sure the actual process is "I want to tell a story about this character in this situation. How the character gets into that situation isn't important." And that is why most of these episodes don't make sense or require multiple changes in order to happen. The entire creative process was backwards.
I agree with the sentiment but personally I'm far more critical of the writing of this show. Not a single episode so far has been good, tons and tons of characters are written out of character, the plots in a vacuum often are filled with holes and contrivances, and like you said they change things that shouldn't be changed because they happened before the timeline split off (although the things you listed for the captain carter episode are results of previous parts, the issue is that hydra already had the tesseract before steve became cap yet in the episode it happened after, which allowed peggy to steal it leading to the hydra stomper being created. also the tentacle monster thing is really stupid and red skull is ruined by that episode).
by season 2 i'm fine with the repeat appearances of captain carter because they did some genuinely interesting stuff with her even if they fumbled it by the end. season 2 is an improvement upon season 1 but that's just because season 1 is the second worst thing i've ever seen and season 2 is just like 2/10 bad
also L&T > season 1 of what if. the only thing i'd consider worse is loki (i'm aware that's an extremely hot take, im not justifying it in youtube comments but i do have a video critique of its first episode so you can go check that out for a peek at why i consider loki to be the absolute worst)
While I enjoyed a few episodes, there are a lot of flaws. Like you said, it's premise of What If one thing happened differently is a bit of a lie. For the events of Captain Carter to happen, Red Skull would also have to get the Tesseract much later than he did in the movie so Carter could steal it. So really the title should be "What If Peggy became the first Avenger and Red Skull was slower in his plans?"
I can't even say that I really love/hate the series. I'm just so tired of Marvel films and shows. I got burnt out on Infinity War, and there doesn't really seem to be anything that Marvel does that isn't either a retread, inspired by, or an amalgamation of something I already read in the comics.
What ifs are neat... if you're invested in the original scenario enough to appreciate the shake up of the status quo. And I can't say I've been invested in the MCU for a good while now.

You should definitely watch season 2. There's only like one episode that feels like a season 1 episode, but the other eight episodes are all pretty good. Basically while there was one great episode in season 1, season 2 has that basically all the time. Not all of them are quite AS good as the Doctor Strange episode, but they're pretty close. I can understand disliking season 1. That's kinda common. But I probably would've waited to watch season 2 before making this video. Though you could always make a follow up after watching season 2 giving your thoughts on the second season.

As a gotg fan (like gotg is the thing that made me even bother with the mcu), T'challa's star lord episode was honestly horrible. They took away Peter Quill and then completely butchered T'challa's character just to make a version of "Star Lord" (which t'challa shouldn't have that name, it was the name Peter's mother gave him) and made him perfect, unbeatable. no stakes whatsoever.

It wasn't perfect but What If season 2 had a handful of episodes I liked but even those weren't perfect, the episodes were ither not long enough or some of the idea's weren't fully explored, Overall it wasn't as fun to watch as season 1 and that wasn't perfect ither......Funny enough Disney plus removed Spectacular Spider-Man for no reason and that's the best Modern day Marvel animated show, Disney's probably sour because thier Marvel animated stuff is nowhere near as good as of right now at least

Gotta disagree on the Tom Hiddelston perspective personally. He’s had multiple different VA roles since before he even started as Loki back in 2011, and has proceeded to have more since. He’s narrated multiple movies, he was on Robot Chicken and Family Guy, as well as voicing a lead in The Pirate Fairy, a full length feature. Maybe not the most talented VA ever, but he certainly does have experience and I think does a fine job as well
ok, visually, i think season two is a lot better looking than season one. it feels a lot more stylized with a cool painted background aesthetic (especially in the Nebula episode).

What if should have taken example from Netflix love death and robot. Which is more like a one of story with unique animation style and have awesome stories, what if should have the artist and creators to have a filled day and just express themselves with all kinds of efforts.

Listen im a sucker for What if Stories but listen What if Season 1 was great My fav episode from Season 1 was What if Ultron won? and in Season 2 definitely better and improved alot! we got a lot character development! Nebula, Hank, Gamora, Strange Supreme and even Hela The irredeemable sister from Thor 3? was now redeemed and I love it! We even got new faces like Kahori she was very cool! sure the villain was Strange but Season 2 is better than season 1 sure Season 1 had a better villain than Season 2 but I still find Season 2 the superior season!

I honestly felt Season 2 was much better than Season 1 in terms of overall quality and variety.

The ideas they have are so boring, oh what if this character was replaced with this character, that idea was used so many times in season one, it's how everyone described the show.

This season is such a boring trash
It was so BAD. As an historian I am sick of watching the Native Americans as people who mean no harm to anyone; and as people who were living in peace until the Spanish arrived. It is so FAKE. Tribal warfare was far more brutal, and common than anything the Spanish ever did. Hence why the majority of the natives allied with the Spanish.
Ps: Just search for the Lienzo Tlaxcala, and you’ll know why.
The narrator just answered his own question while being cynical to prove his own opinion, meaning "it's targeted towards kids" so if you're an adult watching a kids show hey that ok but "It's Targeted Towards Kids" Now are we having fun yet. 🤪

While I completely agree with you on Season 1 I will defend season 2. In terms of storytelling its much more original and gives focus to heroes who weren't in the spotlight in the MCU. Also there's no replacing heroes with other heroes like in the first season which was also a pet peeve of mine to. Also the humor isn't to in your face, theirs one episode that is mostly for laughs but its the Christmas themed episode and come off as fun, unlike with Zombies its not out of place and unlike frat boy Thor the idea for the episode makes sense. And yeah Captain Carter is in a few episodes but I feel like they flesh her out here. Really the only dud is the final episode but I enjoyed more episodes so it didn't matter to me. Anyway I hope you give Season 2 a chance
WHAT IF season 2 became toooooo feminist, every woman is over powered, every woman is smarter than men, women don't need no men. The men where none existent, always simps for women.. everything was about captain Carter. Why did they add pocahontas? She was over powered too..😠. Valcery became king again WTF!!? Even Tony Starks episode was about women. WtF!

The lighting is horrid, the colors are flat and the movement is rigid, the clothing looks like an extra skin and stiff, and despite being 3D, the images are all flat, the art has bo depth perception, which is not excusable when there are computer programs that will do this for you, esspecially the lighting. And the 90s series are done in fantastic American traditional, puting emphasis on more proper human proportions. Esspecially Spider-Man. The 90 series where hardly cheaply done. Freeing yourself from the constraints of proper proportion allows for more fantastical movements and can give more "style", but keeping the proportions as proper as possible while counting in perspective and lighting is significantly more difficult. Making something more "realistic" when it comes to the body and locations will always be harder to draw than something that is made to be cartoony. A goofy simple drawing is always easier. Coming from someone with 24+ years of experience in traditional paper, pencile, and ink, artistic creation.
Besides all this all these critisims are 100% spot on...and yeah...brand loyalty is kinda apart of the problem. People cant complain amd then continue to consume. When that happens all the critisisms are invalidated by the actions, for nothing will cjange as everyone stays the same and continues to watch.

This video is weird. You admit you only skimmed Season 2 then go on to only talk about Season 1 episodes to make the point that the MCU and What If? specifically are still going in this cynical direction.
Every point you made about Season 1 is how I felt too, but I don’t think all of it applies to Season 2. It’s a significant step up. It’s hard to agree with your conclusion when it sounds like you didn’t really engage with Season 2 but still want to apply all of the previous season’s faults to it.
Better is better, and from what I've seen of Season 2 (which was clips as I don't currently have access to my Disney Plus account), yeah, I do think Season 2 is better. The basic hypotheticals are an improvement. The thing is, it does improve it, but it doesn't really solve the problems with it. It's still more concerned with superficial mashups than it is challenging the characters, it still relies on a lot of the tropes and overall structure of the first season, it still has the bland uninspired artstyle.
Don't get me wrong, from what I've seen, it is a step up, but it doesn't fix the issues I had with season 1.
@@ChannelPupi hope you get to seeing it because, as a long time follower of yours, i think there are some moments you might acknowledge have more creative thought to it, albeit a lot of the goodwill i had towards this season went away when they went back to crossover territory because at this stage im tired of seeing MCU characters enter scenes through portals and say something like "Come with me, we have unfinished business" to shoehorn teamups.
