      Thanks so much for the kind words. I did the tuning...although to be honest, there wasn't a lot of tweaking that needed to be done on them. That Tama/Aquarian combo just sounded great whether you took them up or down in tuning. And I'll agree with you...their engineers and production team are top notch. They made the work an absolute breeze.

    Love this! Self taught "drummer" here for 25 years, just starting to play at church after not playing on a stage for almost 20 years. Having names for fills will definitely help me when trying to learn all these new songs. Never used fill names before, but I'm about to start! Will steal some of yours and make up some of my own names, thanks! Also liked how you talked about simplifying when you need to. I have those days where my foot does not want to double up very well for some reason. "Why won't you work today?!" Always thought that I was the only one that happens to.

    I just wanted to say you’re a great teacher. I teach high school English, and want to learn to play the drums. I love your use of rhythmic mnemonics. You’re a better teacher than more than 90% of the teachers I know. Keep doing what you’re doing. You’ve. Inspired me to get an e-drum kit for myself on my birthday in January and get serious about drumming. I feel like I can analogize what you say about playing the drums to what I do for a living: trying to get teenagers give a f-- about reading literature. Thank you for what you do. Chris

    I started playing drums in the 60's and I knew every one of the fills you showed. I have played them so many times that they are just a part of my unconscious drumming library. All of them are very useful fills and beginning and ending and turnaround fills for many songs. The six stroke roll fills are very useful and have been played thousands of times. This is a great lesson to give any drummer who needs to start a library of licks. Thank you for showing it...I was pleasantly surprised to see you showing licks that I have been playing all my life, and I am 68 years old!

  • @andersonm5889
    @andersonm5889 Před 7 lety +8

    Hey, I am a new drummer. This might seem like a dumb question.
    What do you do to get rid of the buzz caused by the snare wires when you hit other drums? Mostly when I hit my air toms the snare wires go crazy. I realize this buzzing is characteristic of an accoustic drum set but I would like to reduce it. I have done my best to tune all the drums and when I turn the snare wires off, everything but the snare itself sounds beautifully clean. But of course I need that snare buzz when I hit the snare. Is there a way to achieve that clean recording sound without compromising the snare's sound?

    • @StephenTaylorDrums
      @StephenTaylorDrums Před 7 lety +22

      No dumb questions.
      That's called sympathetic buzz. It's what your snare is made to do...buzz when a certain vibrational frequency is hit. That being said, it is no respecter of where that frequency is coming from (tom, your voice, etc). Your drums are tuned within the same range. Try cranking the bottom head of your snare up a bit. An old studio trick to do it on the fly is to turn the lugs (4 of them) to the left and right of the snare wire on the bottom head (both sides...hence the number 4) a quarter turn down or up. Keep doing that until the buzz is reduced. If you have more time though, deal with the entire drum for a long term fix. You can also address the tom that is in the range of the snare by retuning it. All lugs, quarter turn up or down until it's lessened. And lastly, adjust the tension on the snare wires themselves. All of this combined should help you minimize the buzz. Hope that helps!

    • @Darrylizer1
      @Darrylizer1 Před 5 lety

      Get electronic drums.
      Baring that do what Stephen said. I had a nasty ring on one of my snares, a Gretsch USA Custom from the 80s, and solved it by tightening the bottom snare head.

    • @phillipdepa9254
      @phillipdepa9254 Před 5 lety

      Buy Evans drum mute rings. They will make you snare “pop” without the ringing/rattling and will do the same for your toms. They are relatively cheap too!

  • @TheDeuceofSpades
    @TheDeuceofSpades Před 8 lety +3

    I really like this drummer.
    Here's a new challenge:
    When can you build tension by NOT playing a fill?
    The best records have moments where there are no cymbals on one, and no fills leading to one.
    Not to say that the songs don't have any fills, but purposely using those moments with nothing to break clichés and leave room for the lyrics and other instruments to breathe.

    • @TheDeuceofSpades
      @TheDeuceofSpades Před 8 lety

    Stephen, I have watched your sessions for a while now, and subscribed to your channel. Thanks for this - it's the kind of stuff that really matters to drummers who play live or for sessions, and often ignored.

    This lesson was a lot of fun! I really liked Stephen's teaching style. He made each fill concise and easy to understand. I also liked the way Stephen segued from one fill to next by starting with one concept and then building on it. Kudos and thanks for putting together this awesome lesson!!!

    Happy New Year everyone! Having the time-honored pneumonic devices for these fills are incomparable. Years ago, when ALL I knew on drums was the paradiddle, I was working on one of my original tunes with a drummer friend. I was playing guitar and I was (unsuccessfully) trying to communicate to him a particular drum fill-in that I wanted (one used in the turn-arounds in the great blues-rock song, "Gimme One Reason".)
    Watching this vid many years later, when I began studying drums, I saw that that fill was the "Pat Boone, Debbie Boone", fill-in. This made me see the advantage of knowing these pneumonics in order to communicate with drummers, even if I'm playing another instrument at the time; this is, of course, alongside the obvious advantage of knowing the pneumonic-codified fill-ins for my own drum-playing.
    Anyway, here's to the 2020 coming year of joyous drumming for all of us!

    Wow! Watching this at first, made me feel like It was going a little too far back to basics but damn, you're not wrong when you say that these fills can save you. Today I was caught in a public music room and this pianist came in and wanted to jam. Being open to try anything, I said sure! So this guy starting play in some kind of ABAB Chris progression with an improved, right hand solo kind of feel. It was really hard to find a beat for it at first but eventually I just started messin around and experimenting behind the guy and every time I felt like he was getting too weird on the keys, I would pop one of those suckers out (the fills I mean) and man!
    It!
    Helped!
    Thanks for the lesson!
