    Best guitar lessons on CZcams. You, nearly singlehandedly, have gotten me comfortable playing over chord changes and I seriously use them in all my solos now where I used to just stick to one scale. It’s so liberating being able to see how everything connects on the fretboard, and you do a fantastic job at explaining all of that. Thank you.

    Hey man I loved solo! Freaking jammed man! I'm a big dead fan fan myself. I love how Jerry utilized the mixolydian form in so many of the dead's songs. Mixolydian has a such an earthy, positive, floating feel to the note patterns. Off the subject, I only got to the see the Dead once. It was June 7 1991 at Deer Creek Music Center in Noblesville IN. They played scarlet into Fire, and it was beautiful. The previous night, I only got to hang out in the parking lot, but I was with a georgous brunette named Lisa who lived in Carmel, only ten minutes from me. She dropped out of IU, freshman year, to live on a hippie commune somewhere in Indiana. She had a full art scholarship and threw it away, never quite understood why she did that. But anyway, you jam man, are you in a band? Down in Pensacola FL, where I live, I have met 2 deadheads total in 18 years of living in this city. Nobody likes the Dead around here. I just dont get it. It's all country or new pop music around here. There is still alot of classic rock interest around here. Pensacola is a weird city in general.

    Hey Ian - long time viewer, first time commenter. Thanks a ton for what you do - your videos have helped me immensely on my guitar journey. I was wondering if during Thursday's video you could go into detail on how Jerry solos around the vocal melody - how he's able to blend the vocal melody with other chord/passing tones. In Jerry's melodic solos (Scarlet, Deal, Loser, He's Gone, Ramble on Rose, etc.), hes always able to bring out the "feeling" or theme of the melody even if that's not directly what he's playing. I think this is truly one of the keys to getting a real "Jerry sound" beyond just making sure you're following the changes / hitting chord tones, and it's something I really struggle with in my dead covers. The Cornell show is a classic example of this for Scarlet. I guess this is ultimately a question on phrasing lol. Hopefully I was able to explain my thoughts such that you understand what I'm trying to get at. Even if I don't catch the live stream I will certainly be watching afterwards!

    Hey Ian, hope you've been well! Been practicing soloing over this song with just an E major scale for a long time but trying to take it to the next level, great video. Q: Would you recommend going through all these steps in one position on the guitar and becoming proficient with that before doing the whole process again at another position? Or would you recommend doing step 1 in the first position, then second position, etc, until you're comfortable doing that all over the neck, and THEN go back and add step 2 to position 1, position 2...and slowly go through the steps as you learn them on the neck (Does that make sense?) Def a Q I've had for diving deeper into soloing over all songs in general.

      True, but the 2 would be minor. Yes of course the order of the Notes B E A is a 2 5 1, and we can get that type of feel. But since they are all Major we have to go with the Key, but you are right they play with such ambiguity sometimes as to where the tonal center is.

    You say at about 4:15 on the video that this is “Form 1” since you are starting with C# on the 9th fret. Other sites I’ve seen call this “Form 6,” which makes sense to me as C# is the 6th degree of E in the major scale. What am I missing??

    I’ve been playing along with the cornel show lately and I’ve noticed something. In the first solo Jerry does from like 4:30 until about 6:30 he keeps hitting the D# as his root note. The song is in the key of E (right?) and I’ve just been so amused at this little musical tease he does. The question is, does he do this in other versions? I’m going to check them out and find out but let me know what you think & if I’m totally wrong, do feel free to provide some constructive criticism! 👍

    • @StichMethodGuitar
      @StichMethodGuitar  Před 3 lety +2

      Yes it is in E, I think I mention this but in E the E can also be played as an EMAJ7 which is an E chord with a D sharp. This is Jerry’s thing!

    Dude, another awesome lesson. My band has decided to do the song "Ophelia" by The Band. It's tricky and I thought it might be a good lesson for you to do, if you want. The chords are C,D,E,F,G,A (not in that order). Seems like the key of C. But there are no minor chords in the song, only major. I've had a heck of a time trying to come up with some lead parts.
