    I spent many nights of my childhood lying awake at night waiting for my dad to come home after having flown S35 (the reconnaissance version of Draken) missions - I was always hoping that I would hear his plane fly overhead as he returned. Most of the time I probably fell asleep while waiting...

    Grew up next to an airbase (F1) where these birds could be heard often as they flew over our house. On rare occasions i could see (and hear) were Viggens too. My dad used to drive me out to the airbase and park at the end of the landingstrip just outside the airbase so we could see Draken (dragon) land. One late night in the 80s we went out to an open night where civilians could visit and i got to see the 35 up close and see a guy pilot a simulator.
    Nowadays i can see Viggen, Draken, Tunnan, Lansen, Hawker hunter, Vampire, SK60, SK61 and L39 by visiting the museum at the now civilian airport that was F1. The coolest thing ever was when the city of Västerås celebrated 1000 years and we got to see some Nato birtds, like F15, A10 and Harriers that came to visit. Russians were invited too, but they declined.
    Never became a pilot, but I've catched up by piloting lots of aircraft in VR simulators as well as real simulators 🙂

    I'm a Singaporean and I an incredibly impressed by the unique shape of the Draken's wings and its flying. Living in Asia means that I rarely get the chance to witness the performances of European jets, especially those that are under the heritage line. I still hold on to my belief that one day I can make it to an international airshow such as the renowned RIAT, and experience the awesome power generated by those heritage jets.

    Wie ich schon sagte Flugprogramm in Zeltweg dieses Jahr wieder gut Organisiert nur das Wetter spielte nicht Hundertprozentig mit, Über die Teilnahme der Saab Draken aus Schweden freute ich mich wieder das war bei den Österreichischen Luftfahrtenthusiasten bestimmt auch wieder der Fall. Denn die Saab Draken war ja schließlich Jahrelang bis Ende 2005 im Einsatz des Österreichischen Bundesheeres, Aufgeteilt in die Überwachungsgeschwader in Zeltweg wie hier und in Nittner bei Graz. Man kann sich wirklich darüber freuen dass es noch eine oder auch zwei Flugfähige Saab Draken in Schweden noch gibt 👍

    I remember a beautiful sunny spring day some time in the early eighties. I was thermal soaring my hang glider to about 2300 meter altitude when I heard a roaring jet-thunder in the distance.
    I spotted a couple of Danish J-35 Draken flying low and fast in the valley far below me. Suddenly they turned and zoomed over the top of the mountain over which I was thermalling, before vanishing down the next valley, rolling and turning as they went. I realised I was flying a very slow aircraft indeed.

    • @Necronomous
      @Necronomous Před 4 lety +2

      @@annahl7591 Nope, Draken are named after the mythological animal. Like they did with Gripen. or Griffon as it mean in english. Viggen are named after åskvigg, axes lying on the ground that refers to the God of Thunder Tor. So they are only using mythological names for their fighterjets. So "kite" ain't the right name for it, even if it is the same in swedish. The name was taken also from it's roar, like a roaring dragon it flies through the sky.
      So now you know the correct name, and it is dragon not kite.

In this case the chute was not needed as the runway was long enough.

      @@pashans Actually it's a RR Avon 300 engine. Produced and modified for preformance and reliabillity by Volvo. If someone is ever in doubt how much aerodynamics improve preformance this aircraft is the showcase. The Lightning had 2 of theese engines and the Draken was faster.

      @@Lonewolf8012 - Ha, see I would say the opposite. I loved my Saab (car) and it was a beauty as far as I'm concerned. But it was the least reliable car I ever owned. My guess is that is why Saab is no longer making cars (and yes, I know Saab cars weren't owned by the larger Saab company for some time). It was an amazing car to drive and experience when it was working. So many features and smart items that you don't even see in many luxury cars today. I just wish it didn't have to spend so much time in the shop.
