It’s still wild just how many products are sold in the US that have no FDA clearance. All the influencer supplements claiming to boost stamina, or make you smarter, or clear your skin, or “detox” your body. Even simple things like vitamins. There’s no actual guarantee that those tablets or gummies have ANY vitamin content because nothing checks or regulates it.
Also if you liked this video from Georgia I would highly recommend the “Stuff You Should Know” podcast episode titled “What Americans Ate Before Food Laws” but ONLY if you have a very strong stomach. It’s harrowing.

The end part of this, about not knowing how dangerous some things are until something bad happens, is what terrifies me about the chokehold that disposable vapes have on people atm. I feel like, in a few years time, there has to be some sort of medical epidemic related to vaping. No one really knows what harm they’re gonna cause yet

Speaking just for myself, cigarettes were killing me.. hypertension at stroke level… I’d been smoking from age 14, in January 1990, up until age 44 in February 2020. My vuse alto device has vastly improved my health. So while I don’t recommend vaping… it’s far better than smoking cigs. It’s a harm reduction thing… not harm eliminating

100% agree, there’s so little research on the long term effects!

They’ve already found it creates lung issues. Now to just wait out the years and see if cancer is apart of it. I know a few people that have been told to stop vaping also by their doctors. The nicotine will increase blood pressure and contribute to heart attacks and strokes. So it’s probably just as bad as smoking.

@@GenXfrom75I think if you’re using it as an alternative to smoking cigarettes, as it’s intended, then it does work as harm reduction. But a lot of younger people who never smoked cigarettes are using them first, I know for many of my friends it even lowered the mental barrier to start smoking cigarettes. In that case they’re just causing harm

There has been research on vaping, Australia has now banned the importation of vapes. GPs and nurse practitioners are the only legal vape prescribers, and pharmacists will become the only authorised importers and providers of vape products. You can only get them on a doctors prescription here.

This case reminds me of the Thalidomide case of around two decades later. It was sold as a morning sickness drug for pregnant women but the babies of women who took it either died or were born deformed. I'm so glad that we now live in a time of far better testing. Oh hang on you mentioned Thalidomide Georgia. I should have waited until the end of the video before commenting.

Interesting! I live in Kentucky and it was really resistant to change when it came to smoking tobacco. People almost felt it was their duty to help support the local tobacco farmers. I remember working at a grocery store in 1991 when people still walked up and down the aisles, smoking cigarettes. It seems crazy now. Thanks Georgia

Sadly, "Unforeseen Consequences" would be a perfect nickname for our FDA. Accutane, Bextra, Cylert, Fen Phen, Levaquin, Meridia, Seldane, Raptiva, and Vioxx were all approved and then, due to [you guessed it] unforeseen consequences [a.k.a. severe side-effects/deaths] all were recalled. I was damaged by one of these drugs and took almost five years tor fully recover. Who can think of another recalled drug I've left out?

This video made me think about how as kids we would be in the back of our folks car, no seat belts even installed in the back seat, of a night, with parents drunk and driving! We too, when we got our licences would borrow our parents cars and drink and drive. Terrifying to think back now!

If anyone is interested in learning a little bit more about this topic, and the history of the discovery of sulfa drugs, Demon Under the Microscope by Thomas Hager is a really good book ☝️🤓

Honestly, they did an amazing job of making sure that all of it was gotten back. I think that if this had happened today only 1% of the effort those agents put in would be put in today. And more people would end up dying. Blame shifting, yadda yadda yadda would be going on instead of actual effort and legwork. That's sad that I feel that way because I'm not even one of those people that are anti government and all conspiracy theories in my head.

This kind of thing really does still happen, but in a less obvious way. Doctors in the US can be literally paid by the huge and powerful pharmaceutical companies to prescribe their drugs. This is such a massive conflict of interest that I can't even believe this is allowed. Doctors regularly prescribe risky medications (and medication combinations) that aren't always necessary. It might not outright poison and kill people right away, but the harmful side effects can eventually cause death or very negative effects of a person's health.
