It’s still wild just how many products are sold in the US that have no FDA clearance. All the influencer supplements claiming to boost stamina, or make you smarter, or clear your skin, or “detox” your body. Even simple things like vitamins. There’s no actual guarantee that those tablets or gummies have ANY vitamin content because nothing checks or regulates it.
Also if you liked this video from Georgia I would highly recommend the “Stuff You Should Know” podcast episode titled “What Americans Ate Before Food Laws” but ONLY if you have a very strong stomach. It’s harrowing.
I second this- GREAT podcast. Also "Stuff They Don't Want You to Know" is related podcast I highly recommend.
The end part of this, about not knowing how dangerous some things are until something bad happens, is what terrifies me about the chokehold that disposable vapes have on people atm. I feel like, in a few years time, there has to be some sort of medical epidemic related to vaping. No one really knows what harm they’re gonna cause yet
Speaking just for myself, cigarettes were killing me.. hypertension at stroke level… I’d been smoking from age 14, in January 1990, up until age 44 in February 2020. My vuse alto device has vastly improved my health. So while I don’t recommend vaping… it’s far better than smoking cigs. It’s a harm reduction thing… not harm eliminating
100% agree, there’s so little research on the long term effects!
They’ve already found it creates lung issues. Now to just wait out the years and see if cancer is apart of it. I know a few people that have been told to stop vaping also by their doctors. The nicotine will increase blood pressure and contribute to heart attacks and strokes. So it’s probably just as bad as smoking.
@@GenXfrom75I think if you’re using it as an alternative to smoking cigarettes, as it’s intended, then it does work as harm reduction. But a lot of younger people who never smoked cigarettes are using them first, I know for many of my friends it even lowered the mental barrier to start smoking cigarettes. In that case they’re just causing harm
There has been research on vaping, Australia has now banned the importation of vapes. GPs and nurse practitioners are the only legal vape prescribers, and pharmacists will become the only authorised importers and providers of vape products. You can only get them on a doctors prescription here.
This case reminds me of the Thalidomide case of around two decades later. It was sold as a morning sickness drug for pregnant women but the babies of women who took it either died or were born deformed. I'm so glad that we now live in a time of far better testing. Oh hang on you mentioned Thalidomide Georgia. I should have waited until the end of the video before commenting.
I think she also done a episode in the past on it too 😊
Only 763 views??? Needs more love this content
Fighting a losing battle with CZcams these days 😅
Interesting! I live in Kentucky and it was really resistant to change when it came to smoking tobacco. People almost felt it was their duty to help support the local tobacco farmers. I remember working at a grocery store in 1991 when people still walked up and down the aisles, smoking cigarettes. It seems crazy now. Thanks Georgia
Sadly, "Unforeseen Consequences" would be a perfect nickname for our FDA. Accutane, Bextra, Cylert, Fen Phen, Levaquin, Meridia, Seldane, Raptiva, and Vioxx were all approved and then, due to [you guessed it] unforeseen consequences [a.k.a. severe side-effects/deaths] all were recalled. I was damaged by one of these drugs and took almost five years tor fully recover. Who can think of another recalled drug I've left out?
Oxy had to be changed to a black box label after killing hundreds and destroying families

Happy Sunday, Georgia & fam
❤️❤️
I’d actually love a video on the establishment of seat belt/DUI laws and the history behind it. I’ve seen some interview videos from the time and they’re so jarring and interesting!
Oooh yes maybe I’ll add it to my list!
This video made me think about how as kids we would be in the back of our folks car, no seat belts even installed in the back seat, of a night, with parents drunk and driving! We too, when we got our licences would borrow our parents cars and drink and drive. Terrifying to think back now!
Sadly this still goes on. I live in the UK and the Sodium Valproate scandal has emerged, which has affected myself and my children as I take it for epilepsy. It breaks my heart that lessons still haven't been learnt because the consequences are devastating x
Wow I didn’t know about this. My son has epilepsy too.
Haven't heard anything about this
Your history videos truly are a favourite of mine, I’ll never tire of learning from you ❤
Yeah I remember reading in high school the book entitled The Jungle by Upton Sinclair it show me the reason why we have an FDA now in the United States.
Unfortunately, it always seems like people have to die for dangerous behavior and practices to be changed. It is scary to think what could happen in the future as history repeats itself.
OMG i think i suggested this a while back, this subject is so fascinating to me. Thank you for doing such a great job covering it 🥰
If anyone is interested in learning a little bit more about this topic, and the history of the discovery of sulfa drugs, Demon Under the Microscope by Thomas Hager is a really good book ☝️🤓
Hi Georgia, thanks for this Sunday video 💓
I live near Bristol TN and have never heard of this. It’s wild.. ‘medicine’ back in the day was just crazy.
Thanks Georgia this was very interesting! As usual I trust the information you share with us.
You are so welcome!
Love your history videos 💜
Love your work Georgia 👍
Always a treat to hear you unwrap a case & share it 👍🤔😢🤦🏼♀️🤷🏻♀️😲🤔
Really interesting Georgia, thank you for another great video. Can I applaud you for your pronunciation as I can't even say Sulphanalydimide 😂
you should see the bloopers!
This was so interesting. Thank you Georgia for laying it all out for us. These are topics that we don’t learn about in our US history classes. ❤
You are so welcome!

Hiya! Been Watching about 6/7 years now, since 2013 ish😊 love your vids, as always
Thank you!!
2013 was 10 years ago 😭
Thank you
Honestly, they did an amazing job of making sure that all of it was gotten back. I think that if this had happened today only 1% of the effort those agents put in would be put in today. And more people would end up dying. Blame shifting, yadda yadda yadda would be going on instead of actual effort and legwork. That's sad that I feel that way because I'm not even one of those people that are anti government and all conspiracy theories in my head.
Thanks
Can I just say how impressive it is that you can roll "sulfanilamide" off the tongue so effortlessly?
Hilariously, Massengill is probably best known to people of my age as "the douche company" (not a joke, actual douches). 😂
Happy Sunday !🎉
THANK YOU SPONSOR
What’s lost here is the number of people who were cured of strep throat with sulfanilamide powder, then, and women who use sulfanilamide to treat their yeast infections today.
Just commenting for the algorithm ❤️🧡
Thank goodness for legislation! Here's one for your medical history - Victorian Baby Murder Bottles 😉
Need to hear about this!

Have u done the oxy epidemic yet? Apologies if u have but you would be really good at telling the facts!
oh my
🙌
💛💛💛💛💛
Did massengill go on to make feminine hygiene products?
This kind of thing really does still happen, but in a less obvious way. Doctors in the US can be literally paid by the huge and powerful pharmaceutical companies to prescribe their drugs. This is such a massive conflict of interest that I can't even believe this is allowed. Doctors regularly prescribe risky medications (and medication combinations) that aren't always necessary. It might not outright poison and kill people right away, but the harmful side effects can eventually cause death or very negative effects of a person's health.
Really shows why regulations are so so important!!
Kind of ironic that the mistake that allowed the FDA to save so many lives ended up being what he was convicted of
