    In case you still use the bag and the canteen, get a piece of bungee cord and attach a loop of it to the pull tab of the bottle pouch, loop it over top of your canteen where the screw on part meets the canteen and it should def. stay in there

  • @rtek777

    MK2 variant fixed the side canteen pockets. I have the multicam MK2 version and there's no more zipper to expand the pouches, now its compressed with elastic bands. Stretch out to fit canteen, take canteen out and the pouch retracts to be flush.

    Awesome review! So far the only review that shows the bottom of the bag. Just learned it has bottom straps and that’s an excellent bonus for strapping up sleeping bags or cinch bags

      Thanks...yes, the straps on the bottom of a bag are critical for use like you said. Realize this video shows the MKI version. There is now the MKII which addresses the size pocket issue very effectively. I use mine all the time after a few years and I still love this bag!

    Nice video, Thanks. Really appreciate your investigating the buckles. Other reviewers simply said nice duraflex.If you put an elastic cord from one of the loops around the top of bottle it would hold in fine.You might also look at the Condor Pack insert.

      @outerlimitless  Před 8 lety

      I was curious about the condor pack insert. I think Chris Tanner reviewed that from preparedmind101. Do you have that insert? Wondering what you think of it if you have used it...

      Yeah I got it after watching his video. It is remarkable kit for exactly like your insert to convert any pack into survival kit. It fits great in the Laptop sleeve area of my EDC Pack. I plan to get another one for Medical back up supplies.

  • @ShonryuB
    @ShonryuB Před 5 lety

    From a backpackers perspective the issue with your side pouch is the zipper option. All of my packs have elastic there so it sinches around your water bottle and your right they need to be deeper. I didn't read the comments someone else may have said this already. But get some parasite and tied it around the top of your Water bottle and on the other end out a small caribeener and attach it to one of your daisy chains. I do that as an extra safety measure on my BOBs. Great review and I like how you organized everything. I'm one of your first subscribers. Keep you the good work :)

    Very cool set up man. I have the same bag , same color and same gripes. But overall an awesome bag and worth every penny. I hope they make a version 2 correcting the little problems and longer shoulder straps. I don't like how they curve too much like a womans shoulder strap but if it was four inches longer it would be perfect. I would love to see a video showing the insert that you use. Very cool.

    Hi. I'm seeing the solution for your canteen issue as I'm watching this video..... You actually have your fingers on it several times😉
    Bungee cord through the "lip" of the pouch and then over your canteen..... Looks like it's got enough "neck" on it to wrap around and tighten with a cordlock.

    The Dust by Direct action has taller side pockets. I keep a very tall water bottle in there and its never fell out. It's a bit smaller, but it has most of the same features.

    • @outerlimitless
      @outerlimitless  Před 8 lety

      I seriously considered the dust when I bought this, but settled on the dragon egg because of the vertical loops which I thought looked unique. which color dust did you get? I like that there are many options.

  • @Whisky_Four-Three
    @Whisky_Four-Three Před 8 lety

    Same as you from the sounds of it(use). From the look you don't put your stainless water bottle in the fire so if you wound sniper tape or fabric duct tape around it it would offer a bit of friction and not be so slick and this would help keep it in the pocket. But that said if you ever boil the water on that wb your tape is wrecked. It just eurkk the crap out of me when the rest of the bag looks great that this is the best design they could come up with. At the end of the day I recon I'd slap a Molly comparable water bottle carrier you know the round max perdition type on it and keep the pocket flat to hold walking poles. Ps think I forgot to say in my prev but really great vid and thanks for sharing.

    • @outerlimitless
      @outerlimitless  Před 8 lety

      Ya, I hear that. I have been eyeballing the Milspec Monkey/Tactical Tailor Waterbottle Corset...think that might be a cool option...and still maintains a somewhat low profile. I haven't tried it yet, but I might one of these days. And you're exactly correct when you say I don't boil water in my canteen. Ironically, I bought mine with all intentions of using it for that reason. I had grand visions of having a nicely charred exterior on my canteen, but alas, it's still perfectly shiny (minus the dents)!!! Hahaha, great post!

    • @268Viper
      @268Viper Před 4 lety

      That was going to be my suggestion. Or go to a alterations place have them cross stitch a square 2-3inches above the pocket with shock cord loop. Add a hook a clasp it in the pull tab. Effectively crest a bungee retention

    I've an idea to somewhat mitigate your canteen problem- get a piece of shock cord and attach it through that little loop on the side pouch. Then just pull it over your canteen in a way that it locks in teh groove underneath the plastic part. Not ideal but should keep it inside.

    I have a sitka as well i hated it. Its super uncomfortable when worn on your back. Worn in the front its comfortable for me. I love my dragon egg but the interior has been fraying and ripping on mine slowly since only a couple months of ownership. I had not watched your video, and that was my complaint as well regarding this bag, I feel like the design of the bag is spot on, but the quality could be improved on with a few things. Even if the bag price was increased by 20 dollars or so I think it would be worth it, to make those improvements. I feel the same about the water bottle pockets as well, The ghost and the dust have deeper water bottle pockets and my bottles never fall out.

    • @sektion333
      @sektion333 Před 8 lety

      +Rick Tunnissen I would think better buckles, they do rattle quite a bit when they are closed, I know its a pet peeve, but my other bags the buckles are quiet and when I say other i mean maxpedition and vanquest. Also, on my Ghost the seams split in 2 different places, something that has never happened on my other bags as well and those bags I have had for much longer than the Direct Action bags. I do however feel that Direct Action concepts are ideal, great organization, perfect size packs and extremely comfortable. With a step up in quality, and quality control, they would be killing it.

    • @outerlimitless
      @outerlimitless  Před 7 lety +1

      Yes...those pouches are actually gun magazine pouches. The particular ones I have there are by the company First Spear. I got them used on eBay. They are perfect to fit a multi tool, but just be aware that if your bag gets wet that your multi tool could rust...so keep on top of drying it off. Those pouches are very rigid...they don't flex much, so what you put in there has to be appropriately sized...and they are the Ranger Green color in case you're wondering.
      I had that paracord strap that i made and thought it would add a bit of utility and personalize the bag too.
      Hope that helps!!

    For your Canteen:
    Idea #1
    Will a New NALGENE BOTTLE CAP FIT YOUR CANTEEN:
    it has Paracord loops on the cap to connect the bottle to your bag. You will need to buy a NITE -IZE #3 S-BINER.
    Later if the se loops wear out they can be easily made using BUNGIE Shock Cord from PARACORD PLANET.
    Idea #2
    Try adding Industrial Strength VELCRO to the INSIDE OF THE BOTTLE CARRIER AND ON THE BOTTOM OUTSIDE WALLS
    of you STAINLESS STEEL bottle. Although the regular Velcro stops working after it gets wet; the Industrial Strength may last longer.

  • @LionheartSJZ
    @LionheartSJZ Před 8 lety +1

    The thing about the canteen: It's the fault of the canteen, really. I've used the same canteen for years and finally got rid of it because the shape which is getting slimmer towards the bottom is just a pain in the ass! This way it won't fit inside a cup for combined carrying, it won't fit decently in side pockets like those in the video and it won't stand as stable as a simple cylindrical one....
    I switched to a normally shaped cylinder canteen and all those pains I had in the past are gone.

    • @outerlimitless
      @outerlimitless  Před 8 lety +1

      ya, it's not a great design. I'm not even sure why I picked that one, but it's what I'm stuck with for now. someday I'll appreciate a normal canteen!

      IF (!!) it fits, and if the sealing of the lid is good enough, how about inverting the canteen upside down, so that the 'cone shape' has the larger part on the bottom of the pocket? ;-)

    Hi man, i just found your review. About the canteen on the side of the bag, an other canteen isn't the solution. Most useable canteens are high. The side bag isn't simply deep enough. I have an Kleen Kantine and that one never fits. Consider that the kleen kantine is world wide in use. So back to the drawing board i say.

  • @JeffWallace2009
    @JeffWallace2009 Před 6 lety

    Your canteen tapers towards the bottom. It needs a pouch or elastic chord to retain it. Anything with a wide mouth and tapered base is unstable.

    • @outerlimitless
      @outerlimitless  Před 6 lety

      Yeah, we've covered that fact quite a bit if you look back in the comments, but it's still sorta ridiculous that it doesn't stay in. They changed the design on the MKII for a reason and I don't have the problem at all...and I carry these water bottles all the time...I did just yesterday with no problem. It might be unstable, but it's still a bad pocket design.

    • @outerlimitless
      @outerlimitless  Před 8 lety

      I've seldom used it for hiking, but I'd say it depends on your hiking goals. if you're going for distance, this isn't the bag for you. the fabrics are too heavy. it would be good as a small bushcraft bag, or daily carry and it is quite comfortable. I do carry significant weight and it carries nicely.

    totally agree about this bag ive looked at it tons with a view to buying one but i cant go past the side pockets. they are useless, such a crap design. not deep enough, only expand on one side so if you have a pouch mounted in the molle slots their its gona be squed when the pockets expanded. i recon this bag would be the bomb if they made it taller by 2-3 inches and had bungy cord tacko style that would sinch down from above to tighten the pouchwith a tough mesh side panels the bungy would have the added benefit of being able to hold a canteen in place. what do you recon to my idea? id love to see it on there.

    • @outerlimitless
      @outerlimitless  Před 8 lety +1

      what are you intending on using the bag for? I basically only used it for edc. it's definitely durable, but the more I hike, the more I appreciate lighter fabrics. this bag is a touch on the heavy side, but carries nice. I figured out that if I criss crossed my straps that it would hold a water bottle secure.
      I hope someday they put out a version 2.0 and fix some of the issues.

    It's unfortunate that when Direct Action redesigned this bag that they cheaped out on the zipper pulls and went from the nice rubber-covered pull tabs to plain knotted paracord. Ditto with the elastic side pockets vs. the zippered ones.
    Like other commenters I, too have noticed that Direct Action's inventory and available products are almost all out of stock. They have really cut back on their product line esp. add-on pouches. No doubt the pandemic and supply chain issue are part of the problem if not the problem. Or maybe Helikon-Tex is gearing up for military sales. Keep the Russians out of Poland!

  • @pathfinderLXXIV
    @pathfinderLXXIV Před 4 lety

    Did you contact Direct Action about those buckles? I never thought of that as being a thing. I have a 5.11 pack with D-flex UTX buckles and there is some play in those. Not as much as your Woo Jin buckles though. Either way, if they advertise a brand of buckle and they're clearly not those, that's shitty and they should be held accountable.
    I liked this until you got to the bottle holder. I use a 5.11 Rush 12 with a Maxpedition Rolypoly attached to the side molle . It's out of the way until I need it to throw a bottle into and it holds a 40oz hydroflask no problem. Plus, I can detach the roly poly and attach it to my belt if I want to ditch the pack altogether.

      Know why you do everything and never do so just because others do so,
      Only do what you fully understand. Good luck in the field my friend. You have the right idea. I was brought up by a Royal Marines Commando Sargent who taught me that if you need more than yourself you are weak. I practice going without anything I feel I need, and unless you have spent time in the woods with no food or shelter then you have not tested your abilities, for me at least my time in the field is to strengthen my resolve. I need nothing but air and water and trees. My uncle who brought me up taught me many things and Having a lighter in my pocket has saved my silly life a number of times. but needing even that is a weakness. all the best BKL. First off, you're complaining about a video that is 3 and a half years old. Second...I start discussing the important features and impressions at just over a minute...so what are you getting at exactly?

      haha! Fair enough! Yeah, I'm from the Boston area...been here my whole life. Sometimes the accent comes out strong...but I'm mild compared to some people around here.

      outer limitless I can agree that is comes out full throttle. You sound like someone from my area and then the Boston accent comes out. I find it fun to listen to. But it was a great video!
