    I think that artistic ability is more to do with the mind. If you draw everyday you develop certain muscle memory but if you take a long break you can still visualise certain things and you can practice in your head by imagining which places to give more depth and shading. Art isn't all about constant physical practice, it is about your depth of understanding and how well you understand how to place colour and texture. Practicing is necessary and helps put your understanding into a physical product, but art isn't just about whats on the paper, it is the whole idea and understanding of the world around you. To be able to interpret something into art, you must understand the features and shapes in whatever it is that you are creating. People seem baffled by your improvement after such a long break but its not that strange. It proves that you improved your understanding during that time and you clearly still thought in the way of an artist. When you went back to drawing, you were able to finally release your understanding and then it flourished. You then proceeded to improve through practicing and that made your art even more accurate and advanced. Seeing your improvement was very inspiring.
    I myself am an aspiring artist and i really love watching videos like this, showing people's improvement.

      I took a 34 year break. I was 15 when I stopped. I'm 49 now. I believe what you say is true. When i picked up a pencil at my grandmothers house last week I honestly did not even believe how much better without practice I had become. Still a LONG LONG way from where I'd like to be, but my passion was ignited again, one that had been extinguished by a few well meaning art teachers in my youth.

I did not practice during the break, I remember I drew about 3 pictures that I do not have anymore but it cannot be counted as a practice as I have drawn hundreds of sketches since then. What you call talent can easily be learned. I mean there's a book about that "Artistic vision" (Drawing on the right side of the brain". And if someone is better than another person with a same amount of practice, that's only because some people learn faster. It has nothing to do with talent. And even creativity is something that can you develope, because creativity needs to be fed, so the more art you see or copy etc, the more creative your art work will be. It's just stupid to tell someone they are talented, when they worked for it long hours for years. Only hardworking people can become an artist and it has nothing to do with talent. Oh, and copying and using a reference is still not the same.

    • @szabomarton2003
      @szabomarton2003 Před 4 lety

      @olivi doen It depends on what kind of realistic paintings you want to draw. If you want to draw from imagination, you have to learn a lot of things, like perspective, anatomy, etc. I would recommend Ctrl Paint and Drawabox lessons. If you just want to copy the best way is to read the "Drawing on the right side of the brain" by Betty Edwards. You can buy it, but it can be downloaded from the internet. After you learnt the fundamentals, learn some techniques, such as charcoal, graphite, white pencil on black paper, etc. It is all about the amount of practice that you put in. If you are losing your motivation watch some progress videos. My favourite artist is ZHC, it is insane how much learned in a few years. Good luck with your journey, I hope you will start drawing.
      Edit: That is not a problem that you are left handed.

      I so agree Cat415 - once you have it, you view everything differently. When I saw the recent drawings, I could see the hrs of layers she had added to produce the realism. I’m still learning myself, I’ll always be learning I hope, but shading and building a piece slowly are definitely the difference between “not so bad” and “wow”.

      Silvie Mahdal hi, the only online place is my Facebook under my whole name, Catherine Levison. I have only done 4 seated attempts at faces. You’ll see those on top. If you scroll down a little you’ll see the last few watercolor landscapes I’ve done. Everything on FB photos comes across darker than in real life. I wrote I lean towards realistic work but I am a beginner who is having a lot of fun with this. I do have watercolor experience in my background, but that was all untrained. I just painted what I saw in nature.

    When I was 11 years old I wanted to be an artist for a living. Drawing and painting was something I always enjoyed doing. My dad told me one day I would never be a successful artist. I would only be successful after death like my favorite artist Vincent Van Gough so I stopped drawing and paiting. It's been a little over 10 years and I'm starting to be inspired to draw again just for fun too. I just got a new sketch and a mind full of thing to draw.
