BMW's X5 was the original 'Sports Activity Vehicle'. And in fourth generation guise, it's more sophisticated than ever before.
In fourth generation form, BMW's X5 demonstrates the brand's latest advances in technology, design and safety, plus it offers with the highest level of autonomous capability yet seen on a BMW X model. You wouldn't expect anything less really. It's all change - but very much business as usual.
Background
The BMW X5. It was the car that, back at the turn of the century, completely changed the way we thought about large, plush 4x4s, the car that, more than any other, defined the modern luxury SUV and the one that since the turn of the century, almost every other prestige brand has sought to copy. Nevertheless, 2.2 million X5s have been sold since this model line first appeared back in 1999. BMW doesn't actually like the term 'SUV' with its clunky connotations and has always marketed this car as an 'SAV' or 'Sports Activity Vehicle', though the tag has never really caught on.
As you'd expect, this fourth generation version moves the game on a little further again, offering what, on paper at least, BMW claims to be the best combination of performance and efficiency in its class. But the competition's tougher than ever before, with rivals claiming better driving dynamics, extra practicality and greater luxury. With all that in mind, is this still the most complete car in its segment? Let's find out.
Driving Experience
This time round, X5 buyers get to choose from one petrol engine and two diesels. The mainstream xDrive40i petrol and xDrive30d diesel variants use a six-cylinder inline unit, while the X5 M50d is powered by a more potent six-cylinder in-line diesel engine with a quartet of turbochargers. All engines channel their power through an eight-speed Steptronic transmission, while BMW xDrive intelligent all-wheel drive is now standard across the range, the system now able to split drive torque between the front and rear wheels with even greater precision and speed on demand. The xDrive40i puts out 340hp and 450Nm of torque via a 3.0-litre twin-scroll turbocharger and completes the zero to 62mph sprint in just 5.5 seconds. The xDrive30d diesel uses another 3.0-litre unit, but it features a single turbocharger with a maximum output of 265hp while offering 620Nm of torque and a 62mph sprint time of 6.5 seconds. Go for the M50d and you get 400hp, 760Nm of torque and 62mph from rest in 5.2 seconds.
A two-axle air suspension system is standard, as is a 'Dynamic Damper Control' set-up to tailor ride quality, this accessible through the usual Driving Experience Control driving modes system. If you want to go further, the 'Adaptive M suspension Professional' package delivers two key enhancements. First, there's 'Active roll stabilisation - which compensates for cornering roll. And second there's 'Integral Active Steering' - which turns the rear wheels in either the same direction as the front wheels or the opposite direction, depending on the vehicle speed. This optimises cornering agility, ensures effortless lane changes and helps the vehicle to dart through city traffic. The few customers likely to venture 'off piste' can also specify an Off-Road package.
Design and Build
This fourth generation X5 may appear fairly similar to its predecessor but if you take a second look, much is different. It's 36mm longer, 66mm wider and 19mm higher, so it's a slightly more imposing thing this time round, with pared-back design language, clean surfacing and precise lines. The way that the roof rails, side window surrounds and other trim elements are finished in high-gloss black delivers an appropriately premium look.
And inside? Well as buyers of luxury models now expect, there's a fully-digital instrument cluster, which shares the same graphics and design as the centre-dash iDrive Control Display. The transmission selector lever and the ventilation controls for the new 4-zone climate control system have been re-designed. Plus buyers can specify a panoramic glass roof that's 30% larger than and can be embellished with a 'Panorama glass roof Sky Lounge' option which provides LED light spread evenly across the glass surface to illuminate more than 15,000 graphic patterns and generate a display reminiscent of a starlit sky.
There's a two-section tailgate that can be power-operated and as before, there's a large boot - now with 645-litres of space, extendable to 1,860-litres if you fold down the 40:20:40 split rear bench. A third row of seats is optional for larger families.

Fantastic review. It was one of the factors in my decision to purchase an X5 xDrive30D M. Unfortunatelly I was "blessed " with an X5 that came from the factory with a hidden problem in the center display, thus in everything that works based on it. A few days after leaveing the dealership, things started to go South! It could not find the map, then it would not recognize the key, then on the day I took it back to the dealership the AC stopped working. After 10 days in the shop, I got it back with the bad news that after several unsuccessful reinstalations of the software in constant contact with the factory, they would have to replace the entertainment media unit and, of course, it was not in stock. It has to be match the specific VIN and only the factory can do that. In this covid days, it will depend on the good will and the ability of BMW to ship a new unit.... So there you are. Paid for a car in the US$ 100ks range and got a lemon! I have had it for 45 days and was able to enjoy a week! Will give then a couple more weeks to solve it, in consideration to Covid, but then, if this is not solved, will have to get into a nasty court battle to get my money back. A real disapointment!

The best review of X5 G05 out there along with Harry’s garage. No reviewers stateside have done such a good job as you and Harry have done. Would be awesome if you can also do an exclusive X5 45e PHEV review. Also it would be worthwhile calling out that the laser lights what we get stateside is a neutered version of what is available in Europe. Sticking to adaptive LED is fine here. Of course Thomas’s review is also good.

By far, one of the most detailed review of the G05. I think BMW still has this market locked. Its hard to find anything that is comparable in terms of size, function and practicality. As much as I love Porsche, nothing in their product line can compete with this. I don't think the need to compete directly, as their Macan is their number one product and I cant see Porsche enthusiast wanting a bigger vehicle than the cayenne. Makes it even more so with the introduction of thier Cayenne Coupe. Mercedes is their closest competitor. If you want a luxurious, comfortable SUV, get a GLE. If you want a drivers SAV(SUV to be politically correct) get this, hands down. It is disappointing that they have not offered Android Auto, this would be a issue for me if I was in the market for a vehicle such as this.

Great review. One minor point to note is that the seats in the model you drove had quilting, which meant they were the Extended Merino seats. The Vernasca are a step below and do not have the quilting. Minor nitpick for an otherwise fantastic and thorough review.

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply I’ve collected my 40i a month ago now and done about 1200 miles. Absolutely love it. I traded an X5 F15 40d 2018, which was a lovely car, but this new one is another level entirely. The interior is so premium, better than a RR Sport in my opinion.
The 40i engine with mild hybrid 48v is stonking too with a stunning exhaust note and performance belying it’s size.
Beautiful car, I went for quite a lot of the BMW individual options which really make it a one off!

QUESTION, when you start and warm up your vehicle or cool it down. Will it start and continue to run when parked inside a garage, hopefully will shut down ( Oxygen Sensors?) as if connected to a house could be fatal. Imagine a kid playing with the key turned the car on and the car is so quiet is posions the house, of Mum while she has coffee and does her make-up.

Hi there, ABSOLUTELY AWESOME review, I currently drive a 2014 GLE 350d Merc, wanna change it now to the X5, which model in your professional opinion is the pick of the bunch? I heard the M50d model doesn't come with air suspension, is that a let down? Sounds like it to me in my limited knowledge of bmw products. Have never owned a BMW b4.

Far more information here than any other review I’ve watched on CZcams. I’ve now owned a 2020 X5 for 6 months but still didn’t know a lot of the details covered here, In fact, tomorrow I’ll go out and try to find another storage cubby on the drivers side that I’ve not found yet! I just wish I could get out and drive it as we’re all still in lock down and for most of the 6 months ownership it’s been sat outside doing nothing(battery being maintained by a CTEK smart battery charger thankfully).

Even if the X5 gearbox never reaches the overheat threshold wich is a pretty good point. The traction control featured in the off road package with LSD is simply phenomenal and breathtaking!

@@OsvUkVehicleSupply it's hard to say. In Finland the x5 m sport costs like 120-125k in euros and the basic q8 model is around 140k. But if i had all the money in the world i'd go with the q8... 😁
Help me please make a choice between BMW X5 and 5 series, both new cars diesel 3.0d. I really like BMW, about 10 years I'm driving only BMW 5 Series, last 6 years I own F10 535i, and before I own E39 520i. Perhaps Х5 is more practicality, it can be used on off road. But as I see 5 series is more emotionally. Difficult choice

They are not the standard seat fitted to this vehicle. They are the extra cost Comfort Seats.
