      Well, the price is making me hesitate (120euros in France, which is roughly $120-125) and also my Wi-Fi connection. My room is separated from the router by multiple walls so the connection can’t be very stable and good overall, despite having fiber. My workaround is to use a Wi-Fi usb adapter/sharer on my computer (which doesn’t have a Wi-Fi card in it) and share the ethernet connection of the computer to my other devices (iPad, iPhone); thing is, I don’t know how Xbox Cloud Games would hold up with this connection. It goes around 90 to 110mbps, seems stable enough (I should still try a packet loss test service or something though) and I don’t know if it would be sufficient. I’m also quite picky with latencies in general, so I’m scared to buy the Backbone to find myself having a 500 or 1000ms latency between key input and seeing the character move.
      Tldr; would 90-110mbps Wi-Fi connection be good enough for Cloud Gaming? Is the backbone really a game changer?
      Thanks a lot for your time and replies.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před rokem +1

      @@GreatRank I think 90 - 110 mbps wi-fi connection (assuming low/no packet loss and a stable connection) would be more than enough. The number 30 mbps comes to my head (but I could be wrong about that) is what they recommend. They list it somewhere I just don't remember but the point being you should have more than enough speed wise.
      My recommendation is that I'm assuming you have an Xbox or PS5 controller already. Why not just connect your controller to your phone and then test it out? That way you can answer most of your questions and see if it works well. Then if it does you can decide if adding the controller would be worth the price paid. As the apps that allow you to do that are already available on your phone and don't require the backbone. The biggest thing the app does is puts everything in one place to go through and makes it seem more like a portable console over your phone.
      Personally, what kind of sold me on the device. Is that I had a bunch of family come over for Thanksgiving. We spent a lot of time doing nothing together in the same room. Multiple other family members were on their cell phones and/or hand held gaming devices (Switch) so it gave me some time to test it out and catch up on some games. As normally I wouldn't game when family was around and would engage with them more but they weren't about that life and just wanted to lounge and do nothing. Anyways long story short, I much preferred playing stuff on my phone with that device (as it kind of transforms it into a mini portable console/computer single unit) over using my iPad or something else (for portable use). Especially, since the screen on my iPhone 14 Pro Max is fantastic along with the speakers (or going with earbuds wired or wireless). Having something that is small, portable, and easy to take my phone in and out of as a single unit is unique. (FYI I don't use a case and if you do could cause some issues with fit. I can go more into that if you want later). And every time I use it I'm surprised at just how much it feels like a completely different device over just my phone. Where if I'm using a controller and my phone it just feels different and not one unit and meh overall. As I still need to put my phone on something and is more cumbersome. My biggest complaint is the small joysticks decrease a lot of precision. And I'm kind of obsessed with high accuracy and control both in PC and Console gaming. I have a hard time saying it is "game changing". But it is certainly a unique experience that I enjoy a lot when I do use. As I get very immersed quickly. And that is coming from someone who doesn't mobile game ever or like doing things on small screens. So if that is your jam easily worth it. The price tag seems a bit steep to me. I think $100 is a lot. But if it is on sale for like $50 - $75 easy win. If you play a lot of games on your phone or would use it a lot the $100 is likely worth it.

    • @GreatRank
      @GreatRank Před rokem

      @@ThomasMuehler Thanks for the clear explanations. I’m more of a PC gamer than a console one but I’d really imagine myself using the Backbone with my mobile on my bed to chill and play some games with the great experience it seems to offer. I do already have an Xbox Controller with me, I’m about to test the Xbox Cloud Gaming once again this weekend to see if it improved since my last attempt; I believe the service has improved since then (last attempt was in March 2022 or something) and that workaround I found gives me a more stable connection, so it’s definitely worth trying, as you recommended.
      I gotta admit I did order the Backbone about 20 hours ago but didn’t feel that good about doing it; what you’re saying is reassuring. I’m not a hardcore mobile gamer but I feel like this is something I could really like if everything works well. And yeah, when family gatherings are all about smartphones in everyone’s hands, the Backbone will be a good time-killer.
      For the case, I’ve read and watched many reviews about the Backbone and did understand that mostly all the cases won’t work with the Backbone or, like you said, would cause some issues. I don’t plan on using it outside of my home (or someone else’s), so removing the case isn’t a big deal for me. As for the joysticks, I’ve read that elsewhere aswell and.. well, on one side this might be annoying for me too, on the other side, as long as you don’t play anything really competitive on your phone, it should be okay, although still frustrating in some ways.
      I did a packet loss test btw, and I’ve absolutely none, which is great news. I should receive the Backbone device this Monday and can’t wait to try it out!
      In the meantime, I’ll try Xbox Cloud Gaming once again with the Xbox Controller, but as I read somewhere (must’ve read about 50 reviews before ordering it lol), the latency will differ between the directly-connected Backbone and the Bluetooth Xbox Controller; like a lot, especially if you’re picky. I don’t know if there’s a good way to see how many milliseconds of latency you have when you play Xbox Cloud Gaming (on iPhone or iPad)? I’d really like to measure it.
      Thanks again mate.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před rokem +1

      @@GreatRank I haven’t tried the Xbox Cloud Gaming service so I don’t have anything to say about that. But I would be interested to hear your thoughts on it. As I am sensitive to latency as well. I’m sure there is a way to measure the latency of Xbox Cloud. But I’m not sure of a way to do it personally.
      I think you’ll enjoy the Backbone One. As it really is a neat device that works well. My greatest concern is mostly with cost as to me this is a luxury type of item over a necessary one. Which always makes me hesitant in recommendation. But I’m very interested in hearing your thoughts on it once it comes in and you’ve had a chance to try it out.
      Joysticks are definitely personal preference. I was playing GTA III with them and it was just fine. I’m just the type of guy who buys Scuf controllers and makes sure that I have the long stick and everything on them. So, it is just something that is a rough transition from what I’m used to.

    First off great review probably one of the most complete I’ve seen. One rebuttal though about your one “but” I completely Understand your point but. 2 points why I rather have this than carrying around your system controller 1. This is made to carry around and if you’re like me I’m not a fan of taking my system or any parts of it out of the house and 2. If you’re talking long term trips or just in general out and about the ps5 controller is battery powered where as backbone is phone power so you don’t have to worry about battery level

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před rokem +5

      100% agree with you on that and excellent points. Thanks for sharing. If you are highly mobile and actually using this on the go then the Backbone is definitely superior. Especially, for the points you mentioned (keeping PS5 controller safe, not needing to charge, and smaller/easier to travel with as all-in-one unit). However, if you are just using it to game in another room I don't think it's as much of a win. But again, as you mentioned an all-in-one system is more convenient.

      Just scrape the backbone's adhesive pads off (the ones underneath the phone and the one that surrounds the USB/lightning port) with something sharp and you should have no problem using it with a normal sized case. (Provided it isn't an Otterbox or some giant case.)

  • @ybed06

    I decided to go for it on Black Friday ($65 instead of $100). Planning to use it away from home for Remote Play and also for controller support on mobile apps. I thought I read that the lightning port DOES allow you to send it to a larger display?

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před rokem +3

      @@ybed06 Interesting. After your comment I wanted to look into this and test it out. Looks like you can use the controller on other devices (iPad, PC, Mac, etc.) but in order to do that you need to have the Backbone+ Membership. As you need to go into the settings of the Backbone One App (on your phone) and then select which one you are connecting to (PC, iPad, etc.) and then unplug your phone (or at least I did) and then plug in via lightning to USB-C (in the case of my iPad) and it worked. However, if I did NOT go into the Backbone One App settings first and just plugged it in it DID NOT work. Which is kind of frustrating and I think limits their controller a bit (as putting this behind a paywall is an interesting choice). I can make a quick short on it if you want. It also feels relatively responsive.
      I don't think it would work on an external display (as the controller itself isn't 'smart'). So it would have to be powered by your cell phones processor. Which I'm not sure is a thing quite yet. But interesting to think about nonetheless.

  • @Joeyw-2203
    @Joeyw-2203 Před 8 měsíci +1

    My main complaint is the ergonomics. The controller halves are too small. Particularly on the right side, I often feel I have to move my hands up to push button or down to use the thumb stick. A clip-on full size controller is way easier to use, even if it's not sized to just throw into a backpack. The Kishi has a Bluetooth vice controller that has handles and layout more similar to traditional controller, I might pickup one of those to see if it's a good middle ground.
    I also wish the case were sized to be used with a phone inserted. If I'm carrying it somewhere to play games, I'm probably leaving my phone connected, so the carrying case needs to accommodate the entire gaming device.

    I recently picked one of these up. I have been so busy lately that gaming while away from home is my best option most days. I recently picked up a steam deck (which I absolutely adore) but was bummed to find out that it’s current capability for PlayStation Remote play is completely unusable. There have been times where I brought by PS5 controller with me to use remote play on another device that is more optimized for it, like my phone but bringing a controller around always feels a little clunky and I don’t want to have to worry about damaging or losing an expensive controller I use at home all the time. All that is to say I got the backbone and it makes playing my PS5 away from home a possibility for me. I think the backbone provides significantly improved portability over using a controller on the go and having to either find a place to prop up an already small screen or attaching one of those phone mounts to the controller I already don’t want to carry around. With the backbone I at least don’t have to worry about where to prop up my phone and its moderately more portable that my ps5 controller.
    I think the backbone is a great product but i completely agree on the price point. $100 is way too much and thankfully I managed to find one for a discounted price on facebook marketplace or else I would definitely pass.
    The analog sticks not being oriented like a dual sense is by no means a deal breaker but it is a bummer. I understand it would be expensive to manufacture another model when the Xbox style is perfectly usable on PlayStation but I do wish that they would just market the non PlayStation branded one as compatible with PlayStation instead of the PlayStation one just being a palette swap for the original model.
    Lastly I’m not sure if this applies to other models but with the iPhone 14 Pro Max you have to take your phone out of its case to fit it in and I don’t even a particularly large case. I’ve seems some 3D printed options to make it possible to keep a case on which would be nice and to be fair I’m not too worried that I’m going to drop my phone while it’s in the backbone, plus I keep a screen protector on my phone but its just a pain to have to take off my case and make sure I don’t lose it while playing a game away from home.
    If you can snag one discounted I think it’s a really handy device but I would definitely search for other options at $100

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před rokem +1

      Man, I absolutely loved the rundown. Thanks for taking the time to share.
      First paragraph, all excellent points that I completely agree with. The portability factor of this is excellent and you don't have to worry about propping up or damaging a controller. But I find it WILD that a cell phone provides a better PS5 remote experience than the steam deck! That's crazy.
      Other points I also agree with. I never use a case so I don't have to worry about that. But I can totally understand how that would be irksome. But think if you were to drop the BackBone with your phone attached your phone should be fine. As I'd imagine the backbone would take the full impact unless if you somehow hit it perfectly right. As the back and sides would be covered and the thumbsticks should protect the screen.
      Also, excellent point about sale or third party. As getting this guy for $50 - $75 would be an easy win.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před rokem +1

      I'm not sure if I fully understand your question. Yes, low-power mode was meant for the console as you need to wake it up from sleep (or already have it powered on) for remote play to work. Then it mirrors your entire console to your phone via the PS Remote Play app. Meaning that you have full access to your PlayStation. So, it should work just fine if the game was minimized and "sleeping".

      You know, I've gotten this question a few times now. The more I think about it the more I believe I made an error. Where I don't think I was actually using a controller... I honestly can't recall. I do remember winning because they put me in a bot lobby. And that my movement and aim was reminiscent of bots but just slightly better hence the win. lol.
      I've got a new phone since that time and the box (along with the adapter I would need to test it as I got the bigger size iPhone) exists somewhere in my storage room but I'm unsure where which makes testing difficult. Also, according to Google PUBG doesn't support controller. And I wouldn't have done anything special to "hack" it so that it works. If it wasn't plug and play then I didn't do it.

      With the iPhone being a different aspect ratio I believe it defaults to what that full screen ratio would be (16:9). I'm not sure if you could stretch it or zoom in. But if you did you would lose some of the picture or warp the picture. So, while that is frustrating that is also kind of what happens when you have a strange aspect ratio. • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před 11 měsíci

      So, the Backbone itself is just a controller for your phone. That's it. It can play phone games on your phone without a console.
      If you are wanting to us PS Remote Play. Then yes, you need to have your PlayStation on and connected in order to "play through the cloud" essentially. Where it will mirror whatever is on your PlayStation to your phone so you can play games. You can do this without the Backbone one as well to try out if you wish and then use a spare controller to connect to your phone if you are interested in what it is like.
      Did that makes sense? It's kind of strange.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před rokem

      I love the idea. Unfortunately, I don't think that would work in the real world. As Backbone just Mirrors your PS5. It doesn't make it a new console.
      I don't think I explained that well... ummm... On a laptop if you plug it into a monitor you can "Mirror" the Display. Meaning anything you are doing on your laptop screen is "mirrored" or the "same" as on the bigger screen. They are dependent on each other. That is what Backbone does. Where what you would want to do is "Extend" that second account to Backbone. Which would be EPIC. But you'd need a second console. As that would mean your PS5 would need to render the same game twice independently. Which it isn't powerful enough to do (which is why local split screen isn't a thing anymore as hardware limitations make it impossible as games have gotten too complicated and powerful).
      Now if you had a PS5 and she had a PS5 at her house you could play one PS5 and she could play the OTHER PS5 at her house and you both be in the same room. Assuming you both have strong enough internet connections.
      Does that make sense?

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před rokem

      I think that depends. As it is really circumstantial to me.
      1. Are you playing mobile games either at home or on the go? If yes, this is excellent for that. As it just connects to your iPhone and is small and portable.
      2. Or buying it for the remote play? Again, depending on situation.
      3. If you already have a tablet and a PS5/Xbox controller you may get a better experience with that. As you can do everything this can do with that.
      4. Again, if you have a controller and aren't going to be traveling a lot then it may give a better experience.
      So, after talking that through I think what I'm saying is if you are A. playing mobile games. B. playing said games on the go or at home then yes adding a controller is worth it over just your phone. This shines as it is low profile and an all in one device.

      I'm sorry for the late reply. I didn't get a notification so didn't see it until now. No, if you're using Remote Play it simply Mirrors whatever is happening on your PS5. So, you can't be playing a game while she is watching something on the same device. Also, the Backbone works via plugging into the Lightning port so it wouldn't work on an Amazon HD10 Tablet. However, as long as the processor is strong enough and they offer the App you could download the PS Remote App on your Tablet and play that way without a controller (or add a controller via Bluetooth to your tablet).

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před rokem

      1. You don't need to use the PS App or have a PlayStation to play non-PS games. For example, COD Mobile. However, if you are trying to play a PlayStation Game (Horizon Forbidden West) you do need a PS5 console and PS App so it can stream to your phone and be controlled with BackBone.
      2. Any mobile game that is downloaded to your phone, supports controller, and does not require internet connection (for example GTA Vice City) can be played with Backbone without an internet connection.
      3. I am not aware of Resident Evil Village being able to be played off iPhone directly. As it doesn't have enough horsepower to run it. Unless if I am missing that there is a mobile version. But if you are talking about the PlayStation version. You would NOT be able to play that without an internet connection. As the way this works is
      Your PlayStation 5 Conole boots up and you start Resident Evil Village ---> You then open the PS App on your iPhone ----> You connect your PS App and Playstation 5 Console together via a fast internet connection ---> Your PS5 sends the screen information to your phone so you can see what is happening. Your iPhone/Backbone sends the controllers inputs to the Playstation so your character can move. Meaning that your console is still playing the game and you can see it react in your room with your Playstation. As it is just screen mirroring. So without an internet connection none of that is possible.

    • @ThomasMuehler
      @ThomasMuehler  Před 6 měsíci

      That is a great question. I'm not sure if I fully understand your question. But technically the PS5 is playing the game, then it is streaming the video to your phone, when is accepting inputs from the controller itself, and then relaying it back through your phone over the air back to the PS5.
      So, if you were doing a multiplayer game that would accept two controllers to be attached and used at the same time I want to say yes? But I'm not sure as I didn't test it. As I would think it would see the backbone as another controller. But the person on the backbone would likely be at a disadvantage as they are streaming which adds latency.
      If you are asking if you could play one game on the PS5 and have another person on the backbone playing the same PS5 on a different game the answer is no. It doesn't work like that.

      If you don't have a console, then the Backbone One will only work for MOBILE GAMES that support controller.
      If that is the type of game you are wanting to play then it would work well.
      However, if you are wanting a better gaming experience (I say that as I think mobile games compared to modern games are very different) then the Nintendo Switch is going to be a better option. As you'll have "real games" that you can play.
      So it really comes down to your preference. Backbone One is going to be mobile games only. But gives you better control and advatange in them as you have a controller over others that are using their phones screen. But is redudant in the sense that it isn't needed to play but adds quality of life. But the game has to support it (as not all do. For example PUBG does not support controllers).

      If you have a good enough internet connection at home and at work, yes you should be ablje to play xenoverse 2 while at work via remote play. But you can test that out before you buy the controller if you'd like. And even play if you bring in an already owned controlled and pair it via bluetooth.

      @@grandfatherrecords It does have to be remote play. As you can't download it onto your phone (unless if you can buy the game on mobile). As the only way you can play console games that you own is by playing them on your console and then "streaming" them to your phone via Remote Play.
      Another solution would be to purchase something like the ROG Ally. Where you could download the games directly. But that only counts for PC games you own. Not console. But allows you to play games while on the go as its essentially a handheld console/pc.

      Yes. As it is just a controller that plugs into your phones lightning port. The other features are all done by your phone and don't need the controller. So as long as the game you are playing doesn't require internet it would work just fine.

      No. That won't work.
      You can play any game that is downloaded locally on your cell phone and does not require an internet connection.
