The capital of Odisha, Bhubaneswar is fast emerging as a hub of professional and higher education, real estate development, hi-tech industries, software parks and health care. It is one of the fastest growing cities of India which is expected to spearhead the economic, demographic and technological transformation of India. This accelerated urbanization of Bhubaneswar is contributing to a large-scale increase in vehicular traffic on its roads, as the need for the intra-city movement has increased. This is going to increase further in the coming years and may lead to heavy congestion of the major arteries. In order to counteract this potential threat to the sustainability of the economic vitality & production efficiency of the Capital city region and to provide safer, faster and eco-friendly transportation services to the public at affordable prices while simultaneously reducing congestion on roads, Government of Odisha has planned for a rail-based Mass Rapid Transit System in the capital region of Bhubaneswar. It has been decided to construct a Metro Rail system from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia Square in the first phase covering a route length of 26 Kms.
A Mass Rapid Transit System (MRTS) was announced by Government of Odisha in Bhubaneswar Region covering the route from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia Square and other areas of the city.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation Limited (DMRC) was engaged for preparation of the Detailed Project Report for Metro Rail system from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia Square.
The DPR was prepared in a record time of 4 months and was submitted to the Government in August 2023. Preparation of the DPR included Traffic survey, Geo-technical investigation, Topographic survey, Environmental & Social Impact Assessments and finalization of the alignment.
Government of Odisha set up a State Owned Public Limited Company in the name of “Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL)” in the month of August 2023. Chief Executive Officer and General Manager (Administration) were appointed by the Government in the month of August 2023.
The Cabinet has approved the project in it's 66th meeting held on 14th of November this year. The length of the first phase of the project is 26 Kms and the estimated completion cost of the project is Rs. 6255.94 Cr, which will be borne entirely by Govt. of Odisha.
The entire Metro Corridor from Bhubaneswar Airport to Trisulia will be on an elevated corridor with 20 stations : Biju Patnaik International Airport, Capital Hospital, Bapuji Nagar, Bhubaneswar Railway Station, Ram Mandir Square, Vani Vihar, Acharya Vihar, Jaydev Vihar, Xavier Square, Rail Sadan, District Centre, Damana Square, Patia Square, KIIT Square, Nandan Vihar, Raghunathpur, Nandan Kanan Zoological Park, Barang, Phulapokhari and Trisulia Square.
The maintenance Depot and the Command & Control centre of the Metro Rail system will be situated at Ratagada Lenkasahi (near Trisulia) over an area of 40 acres of Land.
This project is set to transform the transport landscape of the Capital Region. Bhubaneswar will join the select group of top cities in the country with a Metro Rail system.
Delhi Metro Rail Corporation was engaged as the Turn-key Consultant for execution of the project in the month of November 2023.
Rail based mass transit systems are characterized by heavy capital investments but act as a catalyst for the Economic and Social growth of the region.
Metro Rail system in a city symbolizes its progressive and modern outlook, which is essential to attract investment in various sectors.
Multi-Modal integration will be an essential feature of Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project, with complete emphasis on First & Last Mile connectivity.
The Metro Rail, Mo Bus and E-Rickshaw services will be synchronized to provide a comprehensive mobility to the Capital Region.
Trisulia will become a major Multi-Modal hub connecting the Twin Cities with Banki area.
The first phase of the Metro project will serve major educational institutions, hospitals, commercial complexes, transport nodes and Government & corporate offices.
