I actually found your garden center by accident! During the pandemic my four grandkids were getting cabin fever so we tried to find a safe way for them to get out of the house. We decided to take a “Waterfall” tour and made a loop thru North Carolina (we live in Greenville, SC). Toward the end of the drive we passed this fantastic garden center. I told my daughter that I wanted to go back and visit it once we were able to get out in public again.
Well, things got busy and I did not make it and then I was having trouble trying to remember where the location was (we did not get the name of the center).
Then, low and behold, I saw you guys on “Garden Answer” and realized that your garden center was the one I saw on our little trip around the waterfalls. So now, my daily viewing on CZcams is always “Garden Answer” and “Gardening With Creekside.” Since we are close in zones I find your information very informative.
So, I will see you guys this spring. Keep up the great videos.

When I grew climbers, (back in the day), there were two rules I maintained. 1. No more than 2/3 length removal of healthy canes. This is to train or size control. 2. ‘When growth is red, time to be fed!’
My roses loved the Bayer 3 in 1. The David Austin’s performed amazingly well. The root stock was strong, as were the grafts. Very hearty and disease resistant. Well worth the cost.
As you explained, roses are pretty forgiving in the pruning department.

When the growth is red. It's an enzymes that protect the new growth mainly from temperature change, mainly from frost.
You are so cute! I can't wait to order those gloves. I often don't use any gloves, imagine that. At present my roses are under 2 feet of snow and it has turned cold again so it'll be awhile yet. Your climbers are beautiful and I wish I had an arbor. There is a spot that I could one or two, but darlin' today is my 78th birthday and I wonder if I can continue to keep up this beautiful half acre of land, as my health isn't the greatest. I wish I was your age again. Sending love.

You did a fantastic job tackling those Generous Gardener climbers Jenny. It is such a robust and strong climber, it takes very hard pruning and blooms for the entire growing season.
Roses are so forgiving. I grow a lot of old fashioned roses that only have one big flush of blooms then a few lonely flowers here and there until the next spring. Absolutely full of thorns but I love them and the scents are beautiful. We prune in late July here which is our winter. Looking forward to seeing your roses in bloom. Jeanette, New Zealand.

To tell you the truth, I prune my roses by hunch 😆😅 I have 12 shrub roses and one climber, I don't have a clue about variety, my late Mom planted it, last year I pruned it severely to size control, that rose never bloomed more since I take care about our family homestead as it bloom last season, so don't be afraid, just do it. By my hunch, I would probably cut more then you did 😅

Wonderful! The Japanese beetles are AWFUL bugs and they can decimate a rose bush in no time flat. For me, I have found the extra work that I have to put into my roses worth it, but that is very much each gardener’s decision. Have fun browsing the catalog!
Love the clips. I used them last yesr for my tomato plants. Super easy to move, one handed.

I have found that the Velcro roll is just awesome. I cut it to the length I need and put it around my plant. And the really good thing about it is they will last more than one year. When I take a plant down I take the vel cross strips off and put them in a little container to reuse the next time I need something. I have also used a wire that's covered in a rubber but you cut to size the wire breaks but it does a good job but it breaks I have not tried your black tubing.
I purchased those clips last year at Dollar Tree and they worked great for my tomatoes so I would imagine they would work well for the Roses also..

I'm so ready to prune mine since they already have some new growth but the old wisdom here is to wait until Valentine's Day, so I am at least going to wait til Feb!

I have those same clips. I planted a climbing rose last year, no blooms yet, and those clips worked great.

I have used both the clips and the velcro on climbing roses. I did not like the clips as overtime they came apart. The velcro will hold up for about 1 season. Just good old fashioned twine is what I've been using and it holds up longer than anything. I have a Bathsheba climbing rose that I am training over an archway. Had to move it so I can't wait for it to get started this season! Love the Generous Gardener rose.
It looks fantastic. I had a heck of a time figuring out how to prune my overgrown Japanese maple. It’s a short variety. I found like, one video but then found a drawing online. I was concerned I’d kill it, but it already had a split in the trunk from a huge snowstorm so I figured I’d go for it. It turned out great. It looked severe when I did it but there was so much dead in it and crossing branches, it just flushed out beautifully. I now prune it every year in February (zone 6a NE PA).

I've had an arch in our garage for some years now and couldn't really figure out where to use it. I think I will just have to put it together and get it out there to find a spot. I love the white roses on yours, so I'm going to look for some white climbers. I can only hope they will look as beautiful as yours. Beautiful job and I learned alot too. Thanks so much!

I started a rose trellis last spring and watching it grow I think the sun has a lot to do with how each side grows. But thank you for this video it explained a lot to me. I will be out and doing this when our weather is better. ❤
Those clips are not very hardy. They pop off in a matter of time. Great video by the way.

Roses are tough!!! We had some enormous bush roses in the front yard when we moved into our home and they were dangerous ! They had huge thorns and were not taken care of we found out the were full of diseases, so we had to remove them. Wrapped a chain around them one at a time and pulled them out with the truck . Had to treat the soil and waited 2 years to plant new tree roses 🌹 😍 if we are in the yard people will stop and ask us about them.

Wish me luck! I garden in zone 4b southern MN so we are buried in snow at the moment but spring will be here before you know it!🌹

I love my Peggy Martins! Our local nursery said to wait until after the first spring bloom then prune. It’s considered a “rambler,” not technically a climber, so if we prune now, we risk pruning off blooms.
The roses look fabulous. Awesome job! I’m itching to prune mine (9a) but we always get one last nasty cold snap in February so I’m trying to be very patient. LOL
I use those clips for everything. Last year my Cherokee Purples. I think it was QVC ten years ago.

I have you used those clips that you just purchased. They are very handy, but very breakable! Beware! I will not order any more of them. Thanks for this video and your honesty. That is what keeps me watching. That and that you refer to your plants using female pronouns. They are girls, of course! Love it!

Thanks Jenny. Rabbits prune my roses😢 sometimes they griddle the “trunk “ or main stem 😢I have some of them protected.❄️💚🙃
My experience with the green velcro stuff is it breaks down in the sun surprisingly fast. After one summer outside, I can tear it with my fingers. For places that are simply holding something already close to a support in place, the weakening in one season isn't crucial. For areas that had more constant force, I have those velcro strips break or open up. Mind you my roll is whatever was being sold several years ago. It may have improved or not since then. I have mostly gone back to plastic coated metal wire. Fast to use, and inexpensive.
Have also found that brown stems versus green on roses is NOT a clear indicator of life. I always wait until I can see buds swelling before I prune. Have been surprised many times using the color only.

Great video Jenny! Quich question: do you spray your dormant roses with anything to decrease mildew or black spot in the upcoming year? I am brand new to roses and a little nervous about maintenance 😬 (bought 3 grafted shrubs in 2 gal pots in Sept), and this was suggested to us for the early winter (after pruning). We live in zone 8a NC also but closer to Chapel Hill/Carrboro.

I haven't had good results with roses, but I am not ready to give up. When is your average last frost date? Do you have Japanese beetles? They drive me crazy!

I have been watching your videos soon after you first started; they are very informative and you give me so much inspiration, thank you. One question, where did you get the rose arbor? Can you let me know where you got the garden archway, and also, did you use 4 generous gardener rose plants? Did you originally plant bare root or established plants? Thank you so much for showing the process. My rose plants haven't done so well in Michigan, and now that im in Reno, this might be more hospitable for the sunshine, but I feel will need irrigation due to being high desert due to 5200' elevation ..
I purchased the arch online from Kinsman Garden Company, and there is a total of 2 roses climbing the arch - one on each side.

Hey, I had a terrible infestation of lace bugs on my azaleas last year. Is there anything I should be doing now to prevent this from happening this year? I just looked at my azaleas and I see the white spots 😞 ugh….. any advice would be greatly appreciated thanks
I have a new puppy who is trying to prune my roses and that’s not the safest thing for her to gnaw on in the yard. Really nothing is! How did you teach your puppy to not eat mulch or chew on garden plants?
