  • Over the past two years of dealing with the pandemic, it introduced a host of new challenges. From loss of jobs, inflation, and one not as easily seen, vehicular homelessness. That new challenge has forced many people to call their cars home. Alicia Pattillo reports.

The difference between those living in the cars and those living in the houses is one paycheck. Do not be fooled by those who are homeless because you lose one job, somebody gets sick, or another pandemic happens and you'll be glad you have a car. Instead of looking down upon somebody who's gone through a worse situation than you have, help them and let us grow the society back to what it once was and not what it is becoming.

🤔 How many homeless people have you personally housed? Most people are out of touch because a majority of these people don't want to come off the streets. In the same token no one is looking down on someone because their homeless, you can be homeless that doesn't mean you get to leave trash everywhere. If the law is it's illegal, you would want to do the least so as to not draw attention to living in your car. But leaving trash everywhere this only makes the homeowners reach out to authorities and complain.

Is this a joke report ? That is what Nevada is calling a homeless encampment ? That looks pretty damn neat and clean to me, in the Bay Area we wouldn't even complain about a encampment that looked like that. Those people have cars and RV's and from what I am seeing are super clean. If you want to see what real homeless camps look like, try San Francisco or Oakland.

As I watch this, I am settling in for the night in my vehicle in a Nevada parking lot. I am house less, not homeless. The nomadic community is a different “neighborhood” than a homeless encampment riddled with drugs and crime. I’m a widow, mother and grandmother making the best financial decisions to sustain me long-term, without being a burden to my family or community. This lifestyle gives me financial freedom to travel. I don’t drink, smoke or do drugs, never been arrested, paid my taxes, and attend church in the various towns in which I find myself when Sunday rolls around. The area around my vehicle is left cleaner in the morning than it was when I pulled in. I so appreciate the few businesses that allow me to tuck into a corner of their parking lot to safely spend the night. I would anticipate that the numbers of nomadic people and families will do nothing but increase in the coming years. Perhaps instead of passing judgment our communities and places of worship could consider opening an overnight parking area for nomads just like me. I think you would be pleasantly surprised with the folks with whom you would come in contact if you should dare speak with one of us and perhaps with that brief association your understanding of a different life path would deepen. Many nomads volunteer helping other nomads and those less fortunate. Nomads help to keep clean our BLM (Bureau of Land Management) land. Likely you interact already with some of us and don’t even know it. This segment of my journey through life has been rich with blessings.

That neighborhood that you're showing across the street from that "encampment"? It wasn't even there 5 years ago. Most of the homes directly across the street from that spot were only built in the last 18 months, and the ones on the extreme western edge are still being built out.
That spot has been a hugely popular boondocking spot for the nearly 15 years that I have lived nearby. This guy in the video is a typical affluent and privileged person who moves into a newly developed area and then complains about the existence of things that were there long before he arrived.
I have absolutely no problem with the people boondocking there in the cooler months. I park out there to hike up the trail going up that ridge, for the combined beautiful views looking out toward Red Rock on one side, and towards the Strip on the other. I have never seen a problem of trash, or noise, or drinking, or anything else. I see people who enjoy the land and respect the land, and who aren't bothering anyone but the affluent Chads and Karens.

Let's be clear about a few points here.
First of all, what you showed in your video was not homeless people partying and living in their vehicles.
Those were legally parked vehicles with no occupants in them.
One of the vehicles can be clearly identified as a company work truck.
Secondly, while the pandemic did have a big impact, the real problem is that people can't afford to live in the rapidly increasing cost of living in Las Vegas.
Low wages in Las Vegas are $20 to $25 per hour and these people can't afford to rent or buy a home so they are forced to live in their vehicles or camp where ever they can.
There's a lot of hostility about these "homeless" people but nobody is really addressing the issue and helping.

I'M CURRENTLY STAYING THERE! First off, when I had to leave my apartment I went to the BLM section of Red Rock because I wanted to be lawful and I was approached by a park Ranger one night, he told me to go to this location because it is safer. I will tell you straight up 99.9% of people staying there are responsible and respectful people. Very very few people have been there for longer than a week, most are travelers. Few people are locals like me, I've been there for 8 weeks and have never seen anyone leave trash and no one is ever up late being loud, partying anything. It's actually quite remarkable. I'm very thankful to have been able to stay in a place so safe and quiet considering my position. Most people only stay overnight until 8:30am, if they are locals they are going to work and travelers are going for morning hikes bikes etc. I've been working as a tour guide for an atv company and am 1 or 2 paychecks away from being able to rent a room in someone's home, so I will be leaving soon but the locals there are just like me. This story is more like former Nevada renters bother current nevada renters fortunate enough to still live in an overpriced apartment or own a home. Treat these people well and maybe you won't be treated like the plague when you become homeless right next to them. And yeah-while your at it, kick them in the shins with fee's and fines.. and why don't you just confiscate their only shelter- throw them out in the elements- LAS VEGAS MAYOR CAROLYN GOODMAN AND LOCAL GOVERNMENT DO NOTHING TO HELP THE VOTERS UNLESS YOU HAVE MONEY! If you want to help - give them a zone where they can safely park and sleep and dispose of their trash so they can get to that LOW PAYING job their holding onto! This is a way to help struggling business owners keep their businesses too!

What's really interesting about this story is the fact that the only negative impact that these people seem to have is trash which they only showed one picture of a small grocery bag full which tells me that there's not much trash The other problem is people don't like seeing vehicles parked near their home this is a tough one but it sounds to me like someone either needs to move to a gated community or recognize that they're just too poor to move to that gated community and they're going to have to deal with the people that are a little bit poorer than them and living in their car not to mention a lot of those look like $100,000 converted sprinters not exactly the drug addicts I would be worried about if I was the man complaining another thing if it's such a big deal how come they were only able to get one resident on camera to talk about it and the other was a city employee I know it's a run-on sentence I'm using voice to text cuz I'm lazy

I've tried everything to hide my experience and look younger but it doesn't work. I got hired by a company with good pay but was let go after I gave my social security card and drivers license with the excuse they accidentally hired 2 people for the same job, just to clarify they are still interviewing for that one position. The practice is illegal but it goes on everywhere. In most areas of the nation, it's not illegal to park and live in one's vehicle. Those people may have a hard, difficult choice, 1) pay your monthly car payment, or 2) pay your monthly mortgage payment. They're not homeless people, but instead are inviduals living independently within confined and shrinking resources, and for one reason or another have chosen their vehicle to live in. As such, these people aren't homeless, but they're regularly employed and aren't relying on others to pay their way in the world. People have been turning their vans and SUVs into mini RVs for decades, and they should be interpreted as an RV would be. Many live in very nice self-converted vans that are very well taken care of. Such individuals spend a lot of money on refueling, filling up on water and groceries, and making vehicle repairs. So, while they may not pay property taxes in a location as they're just passing through, they do stop at Wal-mart filling up with gasoline, food supplies, and fresh water, while making vehicle repairs, doing their laundry, and dumping their grey and black tanks, etc. They can easily spend $100 - $300 in one day/night as they travel through a town. In return, these busineses, like Wal-mart, Cracker Barrel, and various truck stops, etc. will welcome them to spend a night in a specified parking area. Such individuals are supposed to check in with the business before stopping to spend the night, to verify it's allowed, what're the rules, and to see if there's a designated area. There are always some who abuse the system, making it difficult on everyone. There is also BLM land for camping with little to no facilities, such as water/electric hookups. Then there are those who are seriously living out of their vehicles, because they have nowhere else to live. Making it harder on these folks just hurts everybody, but an area has the right to define laws/rules in their location. Many churches and cities have begun designating specific areas where they choose to allow people who live in their vehicles to safely park. That is a wise decision, and it gives the community a chance to work with them to give them a hand up in becoming productive neighbors again. Other towns and states will begin campaigns against the homeless, in an effort to get them to move on. That's detrimental to all involved, frequesntly resulting in drug use, crime, abuse, and sometimes they're unsafe. Kicking them out of your city only pushes them deeper into poverty and danger, and frequently into homeless camps outside city limits with no facilities, no resources, and no assistance. I don't think people realize the homeless once had homes and jobs and families and good health, but that something horrible happened which broke them either financially, emotionally, physically, and/or mentally, etc. Usually it is a combination of bad circumstances with no way out that brings people to homelessness. Most want a way out, so lending a hand in a targeted manner can be very, very effective. Also, the majority of people living in their vehicles or on the streets are decent, moral people - like one parent families - who are working or disabled and trying their very best to improve their life situation... some are well educated with multiple college degrees. A community that strives to help these individuals will be helping their community in visible ways that reverberates across lines like class, finances, education, and even down through multiple generations. It's a worthwhile productive endeavor to watch these families as they pull their lives back together, integrating into their community once again. Really, there go any of us but for the grace of God. We're all benefitted as a community when all living within that community have the basics necessary for survival.

I get your point. But did it ever occur to you that when companies increase the wages of their employees, the consumer pays for it in the end?? Truth be told, if the people at the "top" were willing to be more equitable in sharing the profits of their companies with their employees as opposed to being so greedy and self-centered, your idea would go a long way toward bringing about a solution. But you and I know that is not going to happen.

It really hits a nerve to hear that people in Nevada are having to live in their cars or RVs…and the only rebuttal is that it is ILLEGAL to live in a car or RV on a residential street. Seriously? The first thing I thought of is the folks that are having to live this way. What happened? You can’t assume that they want to be living like this. If you have ever been to Vegas then you know that after 9:00AM it is too hot to be outside, much less in a car. There are tons of jobs that need people to fill them. We are going to have to find a way to bridge the gap between these folks that are stuck.

They dont want to solve the problem because if we all wanted that , after more than 2000 years of homelessness and poverty and lots of money ( I mean this goes way back to the time of Christ ) we as a society along with the ruling elite would of solved it . Do not blame this on capitalism because this exist in commy countries too...There are some great videos on the homeless problem in California and how the politicians and so called none profits , that profit big time off the misery of homeless and down troden make money off this. Food in Vegas is almost 25% more expensive than in California and the wages here are almost double less than California. I only moved because Cali has good paying jobs but we barely were able to rent a spot because their asking for first and last month + security deposit and wit the rents 2,500-3,000 for 3 bedrooms we refused to pay 10,000-15,000 dollars just to rent a house !!!! Has the homeowner that was interviewed in this video talked to these homeless people? I think the answer is no. If he tried to communicate with them and discuss the trash situation or what’s important to him I’d be willing to bet they would be reasonable. These people are working people not bums freeloading for years. It’s likely if the homeowner had a few conversations with them he’d find that they’re very similar to himself.
