  • The time has finally come...we're making the final drive up to ALASKA! We have 12 days and 3,000 km (1,864 miles) to go and for the first leg of the drive, we're driving the Sea to Sky Highway!
    The Sea to Sky Highway is a STUNNING 150 km (93 mile) drive from Vancouver to Pemberton, just north of Whistler, with gorgeous views of the Howe Sound, mountains, towns to visit, and hikes and sights to see! And we spent two days driving most of the road, making different stops along the way!

    Years ago I spent five months in Whistler, from February to June. Drove the Sea to Sky several times down to Vancouver and back. Still the most beautiful drive I've ever seen. Drop dead gorgeous. Also saw bears daily. If you didn't see at least one a day right in town you just weren't paying attention.

    • @adrianadrian255
      @adrianadrian255 Pƙed 2 lety +1

      I worked up there many years ago. - in the upper village, in the summer we'd get tourists coming in and complaining they hadn't seen a bear. i'd take them to the doorway of the store and point them out to them - there'd sometimes be a dozen gazing on the hill. I lived in Squamish, for a few years working in West Vancouver and then a few more working in Whistler, I drove the Sea to Sky everyday - but back before the olympics, when the road was wild - often referred to as "the death highway", the southern stretch from Horseshoe Bay to Squamish was once one of the most dangerous roads in the world

    • @AdventuresofAplusK
      @AdventuresofAplusK  Pƙed 2 lety

      That drive blows us away every time too! It never gets old.

    • @AdventuresofAplusK

    • @adrianmcgrath1984
      @adrianmcgrath1984 Pƙed 2 lety

      @@AdventuresofAplusK I used to love the drive when it was 'extreme'. I worked in Whistler when the Olympic bid was going through and knew people who were on the Olympic committee. The sole reason for wanting to host the Olympics was to force the government to build a new road, the town wanted customers to be less put off by the drive.
      When the weather used to get very bad, RCMP would set up a road block just north of Squamish and talk to drivers. Only allowing locals through. It didn’t matter what you were driving, a lot of fancy 4x4s from Vancouver would be turned around and sent home. If you weren’t used to the road, they didn’t want you on it. - this didn’t matter so much to the hotels, since rooms were booked and paid for, but to restaurants and other businesses, the loss of customers was felt.
      Although other businesses were involved, it was mostly the company that owned Whistler/Blackcomb that lobbied for the games and the new highway. As soon as the bid was won, the company lobbied the government for compensation for 'loss of earnings' - since having the hills used for the Olympics, meant they couldn’t sell skiing to the public. - the Olympics is a horrible racket.

    Bob ! - haven't seen that in a long time. Back when the road was bad, knowing where rockslides etc were was important. Without mile markers, locals reference spots by landmarks like creeks, falls, lakes etc. "Bob" is one such landmark, they even use it on the radio for road reports - "Big Orange Bridge" - or, Bob

    What a small world, we exited our Alaska cruise in Vancouver today, and hopped on a bus to the gondolas via sea to sky highway. Imagine my surprise to see your vid dropped in the same day. I wish we had the time to do more hiking like you guys did (gonna have to drive here next time) but then again it almost hit 90 degrees here today.

    Just a quick clarification on camping fees. The closer to a city or town you are the more likely there will be a fee. Provincial sites almost always have a fee, assuredly if they offer running water, showers, etc. Sites & Trails which look after the back country camp sites and most of the hiking trails will be free if you have to work a bit to get to them. We live on northern Vancouver Island and are surrounded by both Provincial and Sites & Trails campsites and I can't recall the last time I paid. Mind, we don't camp where the big trailers go, generators, lights on all night...

      I don’t know if it still there, Squamish has changed beyond all recognition since I lived there - population is 17,000 now, it was less than 800 when I lived there. There used to be a community/cultural centre close to the highway at the south end of town run by the Squamish band. Ironically, for most of the years I lived there I commuted to West Vancouver to work at Park Royal South. Which is at the north end of the Lions Gate bridge. Park Royal South and quite a bit of land (including the rail yards) are on Squamish reserve land.
