  • Plymouth is a historic coastal city between Torquay and Looe and located in the county of Devon, England. Plymouth is the largest city in Devon and the 13th largest city in England. Known for its rich maritime history, Plymouth has played an important role in England's naval history and has been a major port for the British Navy for centuries. The city is also known for being the departure point for many famous voyages, including the Mayflower, which set sail from Plymouth in 1620 carrying the first English Puritans, also known as Pilgrims, to the New World.
One of the most popular tourist destinations in Plymouth is the Plymouth Hoe, a park overlooking the sea. The Plymouth Hoe is a great place to relax and enjoy the views of the sea and the city, and it is also home to the famous statue of Sir Francis Drake, who was a famous English explorer and naval officer who lived in the 16th century. The Plymouth Hoe also offers many recreational activities such as mini-golf, tennis courts, and a playground.
Another popular tourist destination in Plymouth is the Plymouth Barbican, a medieval quay area with narrow cobbled streets and charming fisherman's cottages. The Barbican is a great place to explore and take in the history of the city, and it is also home to many shops, restaurants, and cafes. In the Barbican, you can also visit the Plymouth Museum and Art Gallery which has exhibitions showcasing the history and culture of Plymouth and Devon.
The Mayflower Steps at the Barbican in Plymouth, England, is a historic site that marks the spot where the famous Mayflower ship set sail in 1620. The Mayflower was a ship that carried the first English Puritans, also known as Pilgrims, to the New World. The voyage is considered a significant event in American history as it was the beginning of the European colonization of the Americas.
The Mayflower Steps is located on the waterfront of Plymouth and is a popular tourist destination.
Plymouth is also a great destination for outdoor activities such as hiking and watersports. The city is surrounded by beautiful countryside and is located near the Dartmoor National Park, which offers many hiking and cycling trails. Additionally, Plymouth is located on the coast, making it a great place for watersports such as sailing, windsurfing, and kitesurfing.
Plymouth is also home to many universities and colleges, making it a vibrant city with a large student population. The University of Plymouth is one of the largest universities in the city, and it is known for its strong programs in engineering, marine biology, and environmental science. Additionally, Plymouth College of Art, Plymouth Conservatoire and City College Plymouth are also located in the city, providing numerous options for higher education.
Plymouth is also known for its rich cultural heritage and is home to many festivals and events throughout the year. The Plymouth International Book Festival, Plymouth Folk Festival and Plymouth Gin Festival are just some examples of the diverse events that take place in the city. Plymouth also has a thriving music scene and is home to many music venues and live music events.
In summary, Plymouth is a historic coastal city with a rich maritime history and a vibrant cultural scene. The city offers a wide range of activities and attractions, from historical sites such as the Plymouth Hoe and the Barbican, to outdoor activities such as hiking and watersports, making it a great destination for tourists and visitors. Additionally, with a strong higher education sector and diverse events and festivals, Plymouth is a vibrant and exciting city to live in.

Plymouth looks like the perfect place for an expat that needs to get out of the schengen for a while. I'll be living in Portugal, but while I wait to be given residency there, I could pop over to Plymouth as Plymouth has ferries going directly to N. Spain, making my trek back to Portugal even faster. THANX! Beautiful filming!

The main thing that stood out in this very interesting video was how clean and litter free the streets around the Barbican are. I know it was filmed in January and maybe when there are more tourists there may be litter but it was very pleasing to see that standards are maintained during the winter months. Well done Plymouth!

LOVELY! And yes we live in Mutley and here is a shortish walk all downhill of course. We noticed a few shops move and of course the FUDGE SHOP chain arrive. We know one of the Chinese cafe owners in a sort of hidden away places. My first visit was with the school 1973 by train and many memory's formed. The Mural was being painted at that time and a scruffy paint splashed artist doing the finishing touches. Our daughter was born in Plymouth.

I like visiting navel towns, we were in Portsmouth a couple of years ago and Falmouth this late spring they have an extra dimension with the naval craft and infrastructure to see. When we were in Portsmouth we spent some of the afternoon on a pub terrace next to the Wightlink ferry terminal watching he ferries come and go.

The thought of the Mayflower of 1620 and the way the same steps that were used 500 plus years ago by people to move to the U.S. is astonishingly incredible. There is so much history in Barbican that it's impossible not to stop every few feet to take in these wonderful sights. I sure would like to visit this beautiful place one day. Perhaps the most famous steps in history, the Mayflower Steps have supposedly been located in a surprising, yet somewhat cheeky spot - under a women's restroom in an English pub.
A set of steps built in Plymouth in 1934 commemorates the location where the Pilgrims are said to have left England on the Mayflower in 1620 to settle North America. However, a local landlord says the actual location of the steps is not where tourists line up every year, but rather beneath the Admiral MacBride pub just a few feet away, SWNS reports.
“Legend has it that this is the home of the Mayflower Steps," Admiral MacBride’s head chef Ollie Marshall, said in comments obtained by SWNS. ''The building was put on top of it more than 300 years ago and they are directly beneath the women’s toilets."
