I feel just as lucky having grown up listening to this era of music in the 80s and 90s. Dad always had "the oldies" station on. I think that's what helped me appreciate many years and genres of music. But the 50s and 60s will always be one of, if not my favorite times in music.

Dear India, I was a 15 year old in 1964 working at the A&W drive-in restaurant in Kitchener Ontario when a co-worker suggested I invite Erica, another co-worker, to see Jay and the Americans who were appearing at Waterloo Lutheran University. I finally summoned the courage to invite her and away we went. Neither of us had any idea what we were going to see but the show was wonderful. As soon as I could scrape the money together (I was earning 75 cents per hour) I bought their album and wore it out. Thanks for bringing back some great memories with music that has stood the test of time.
Other great songs by Jay & the Americans "This Magic Moment", "Walkin' in the Rain", "Crying", "Only in America", "Lets Lock The Door (and throw away the key). Jay had classical training and had studied to be a Cantor. I would have loved to hear him sing "Kol Nidre". He truly had an amazing voice, and holding those notes had the audience in awe. RIP, Mr. Black.
Nice to see your reaction to this wonderful tune from my youth! I have always said that Jay Black had one of the strongest voices in Rock & Roll. "Come A Little Bit Closer" was written by Tommy Boyce & Bobby Hart, who wrote many other big hits in the 1960s, including several dozen for The Monkees.

Jay has got a very wonderful strong voice and probably never had to practice in his whole life. Jay did not write Cara Mia but he re-vamped that song back when he was early twenties I reckon. Probably one of the highest voices that a male can sing. I don't know if anyone has beaten him yet. He is still alive and around 81 or 82 years old he just had a birthday. He's retired n not singing no more. He was singing up until maybe 7 years ago and could still carry a tune. Those are the good old days when music was recognizable and they had good voices behind it. And I mean voices that can actually carry a tune and sound manly at the same time.... (And not screaming like Michael Bolton) To me I think Jay is so equal to Elvis's voice.
