Have you heard about that whale that killed itself because the cage was small and it had no other contact to the other whales? It’s sad that people think that animals are a source of attraction. Sadly even if the zoo keepers were on hand, there is little that they could have done. As you do not ever what to get between two adult male gorillas having a fight for dominance. And spraying them with water would only make them angrier and they might come to regard the zoo keepers as threats in the future. Gorillas are not dogs and should never be regarded as such.
On a side note, I do not know the relationship between those two gorillas. But if I had to guess they are brothers, in which case you can expect fights between them to happen from time to time as they will constantly be trying to show dominance over each other.
If they are not related then one of them should be relocated immediately, as being kept in close quarters to one another could lead to more and more violent altercations until one is either badly injured or dead.

The gorrillas would beat on the glass until they dominated the "intruder", same with the chimps and most of the other large beasts. The orangutans would not though.. they're capable of understanding that it's them in the mirror.. Capuchin monkeys too.. but most others, not so much..
Most animals can't recognize their own reflection, so the more territorial animals might attack the glass anyway, thinking it's another of it's species

Not that anyone will actually see this comment, once when I went to the Houston zoo years ago I was casually walking by the tiger exhibit, heard a noise to my right, and when I looked over there a tiger was just sitting there with nothing between him and I but a small white wooden fence that could not keep out a small dog. I was like, um, I think he is not supposed to be there. We kind of just walked away as a few others had already gone to get the zookeepers. The tiger never moved an inch, just sat there watching us, knowing that he could of killed me with very limited effort.

Years ago, I went to the zoo with my daughter on a class trip, when she was in school. When we were at the gorilla enclosure, there was a gorilla sitting there and he kept blowing kisses to my daughter and me. He would cover his eyes playing shy, then he would blow us a kiss. We did the same back to him. He did this several times. Was one of the most awesome experiences ever.
Now I look at videos of the zoo, and I feel like these animals shouldn't be caged in such a way. It's so sad.
It hurts to see these mighty gorilla beasts in a cage like that. They are really admirable creatures.

Those poor gorillas being teased by people is so sad. Imagine having to go through this everyday. These poor animals. I know they are well looked after, but it's sad not to see them running free.
I'm glad I bought noise canceling headphones last year and I use them a lot when I'm in a noisy environment.
Even if the animals are provided with shelter to hide from the eyes of visitors, if I were in their place, the noise alone would be living hell for me and in a short time I would be acting like some of the gorillas or throwing stones like the polar bear.
Many animals have much more sensitive hearing than humans. And many zoos are open 365 days a year.

I swear, when I see an animal punching glass, or trying to climb out literally smacks my heart out of my chest. I seen zoos and enclosures for birds, the size is insanely small. And as soon as I see toddlers pounding their chest at gorillas faces, I will be glad that they bust through that glass to escape somehow or do something worse. Sorry if I also was to harsh on the kids “mistakes” I just hate the idea of animals in small spaces their entire life is all.

Interesting to note the use of "tools" by some of the animals, from rocks to cables, to achieve their goals.
I saw a video years ago, of a honey badger in a zoo pit enclosure. The video shows the badger hauling a huge wood branch half way across the enclosure before leaning it up against the corner of the pit and then just climbing up it and out. It had obviously thought about how to do this as it was very deliberate.

Many years ago, visiting a zoo in South America (Dad was stationed in the country), I saw a father was holding his young son up & over the railing of the polar bear enclosure. One of the bears didn't like the invasion of its space and leapt straight up to take a swing at the kid. That massive clawed paw missed the boy's head by just inches. Also, I don't know why people are so surprised when the great apes act so much like their idiotic cousins on the other side of the glass...

Took my son to the Melbourne zoo. A lot of people at the chimp enclosure, pointing, laughing, making 'chimp' noises etc. I took my sons hand and led him away. He wasn't real happy with me. Less than a minute later, everyone standing around the enclosure was covered in faeces and the chimps were laughing and pointing. I had watched a show on TV about chimps the previous night. Twas fun. :)

Years ago I took my disabled dad to the Cincinnati zoo on Thanksgiving day when most of the place was closed, but some open for free, no employees I saw. A flamingo was walking about apparently on it's own, as well as a couple friendly goats, probably because they're so acclimated to humans, I thought 'great!' But then we came upon a single ape in a smallish, mainly indoor fairly barren enclosure with maybe a couple logs tilted against the wall and a tire on a rope. He (or she) was over in the corner chewing on his fingers, most of which were down to nubs. My dad who couldn't really speak due to a stroke, pointed and said "oh boy" clearly. Heartbreaking. Since then I have become fundamentally opposed to zoos. So sad....

@@VioletClematis Sadly, they have to do what sells. More appropriate amounts of land means less animals, which customers will dislike. Its just how it works. The animals probably don't mind, but would 90% prefer more space, they'd just have to be cautious at first (10%)
