  • We caught up with Chilean managerial legend Manuel Pellegrini in beautiful Seville and spoke about his Atlantic crossing to sample the different footballing styles that Italy, France and England had to offer. The English game wasn’t as primitive as some might claim - thanks to the innovating force of Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal and the adaptations of Fergie at Manchester United. Also in part one, the importance of an open, enquiring, cultivated mind, and working with talents like Riquelme, Senna, Pires and Cazorla at Villareal.4
We also hear how during the South American phase of his managerial career the Chilean learned to control his temper and develop emotional intelligence - although a little dose of the hairdryer treatment doesn’t go amiss from time to time.
We learn how a clash of ideas with Real Madrid’s president caused a departure which led to three happy years at Malaga. And there’s great stuff about current club Real Betis - working with wing legend Joaquin and winning the Copa del Rey. Like veteran Joaquin, 69-year-old Manuel is incredibly demanding of himself to maintain peak condition; every day, he says, he treats as the first of his career.

Thank u for those words. I'm from Chile, and I must say Manuel still is not recognized as England does. Very rare.

He might not recall this but this 'charming man' once produced a pearl of wisdom in his first season as Manchester City manager. I still extol this anecdote to this day, in the context of 'know thyself', and it was something along the lines of, and I paraphrase:' It's not what they [the other team] does that counts, it's what you do [Manchester City] that counts. I'll finish with a great quote by Liam Gallagher:
'Manuel Pellegrini’s beautiful, I love him. I want him to adopt me'

What a great interview! Manuel Pellegrini is one of the most intelligent managers in my opinion. The way he sees football always fascinates me. As a betis fan i hope he stays here until he achieves another huge success( champions league spot, win another copa del rey, win europa league). So that he can leave as a complete legend. Love you Manuel!

Pellegrini said he went to England in 1988 - but in the description you've said the English game was under the influence of Arsene Wenger, who arrived in England in 1996. Huh?

If Xavi wouldn’t have joined Barça, i’d pick him. He’s sadly past his prime now.. If Xavi were to leave i’d pick Arteta.

As a Scot who speaks fluent Spanish I I understand why Spanish speakers find it hard to speak English, it’s hard to explain but I understand. There are people like Manuel Pellegrini and Rodri at Man City who speak it with ease and it shows how intelligent they are.

I don't find my compatriot's English to be very good, he lacks an accent.. Chileans who speak English generally have an American accent. 🤔
