He himself admitted towards the end of his life that he was a failed ruler. His failure sprang from his attempt to faithfully follow Islamic dictates formulated in tribal Arabia. He was obsessed with his religion which does command suppression of other faiths by all means. He faithfully obeyed and brought ruin upon the people. In fact Akbar did everything wrong. Muslim rulers had always defeated the Rajputs. So had his father and grandfather . But he made matrimonial alliance with them and gave them high posts in Mughal adminstration and army. In few decades rajputs took full control of the Mughals. Thus Mughals submerged themselves in vine and wives and gave whole responsibility of administration to rajputs . When Aurangzeb came to throne he found empire virtually in hands of rajputs. He took every step to force Rajputs out of administration . This caused revolts which he successfully crushed in his fifty years . But when his weak successors ascended they did nothing to consolidate Mughal Empire .
If their had been two or three more Aurangzebs . Mughal rule would have lasted longer and that too without any indian support
