    You have interesting ways of landing your PBY Catalina

      It’s a very difficult plane to land

      @@stephenhughcrisp Yes I noticed that. You are way better than me, I am a failure at RC Flying. I fly my aeroplanes on Control Lines, I'm good at that.

    Nice! Thanks for the video!

    I have several of them. Where the hell have you been lol. Watched every video about these planes. Never seen yours

    Very nice plane and good piloting skills! Especially the FIRST landing was a greaser😀
    But let me leave some comments for those who try the same: 1) Don't do the maiden flight on water. She should also be able to do a "rabbit start" from grass. 2) For trimming and familiarizing with the plane get some safety-altitude immediately after start. 3) Flying on a river with it's current adds some risk on top if you don't have a rescue boat at hand. If the plane tips over on the water (caused by e wind gust taxiing crosswind or a bad landing) you would be screwed.
    Happy flying!

    Congrats! Those have been OOP for a while and are quite rare. I have one that I have been flying for years and one NIB as a spare. As you found, it can be tough to get a good landing. Take offs can be a challenge too as if the wing should dip and drag a float, it likes to water loop.

    Differential thrust is also preferable and easy to set up just switch it off before take off

    You flew the Catalina so far away from the camera we couldn't tell what sort of airplane it was it could have been any airplane we wouldn't have known.

      Yes. Quite difficult with the GoPro. But I can assure you it was always the Catalina!!!!

    Make sure you have very little elevator throws as well

    • @stephenhughcrisp
      @stephenhughcrisp  Před 2 lety

      Find it very difficult to land. Needs lots of speed. Maybe I should reduce the elevator throws more.

    Great video - thank you;. I just brought a new old stock one that has been built but never flown. I love what you did with the wheels on the side - any idea what size or where you got them from. Am sure I could find some to match somewhere. A beautiful scale mod- well done.

    • @stephenhughcrisp
      @stephenhughcrisp  Před 3 měsíci

      Hi. I just matched up the wheel size with the size of the sticker on the side of the plane. the wheels are pretty cheap. You can get them online or from any Hobby store. Made from plastic and rubber.

      @@stephenhughcrisp Thanks so much for your advice, the Catalina looks so much better with them. I have a friend with mini lathe so fantastic. Can't wait for it to arrive. I spoke to a friend who's neighbour flew them in WW2 and he still has his original flying suit from WW2 - amazing stuff. Thanks again - I shall let you know how it goes.

    Oh one more thing.
    The eflite twin otter has those white and black CCW and CW propeller that get rid of the p factor perfectly

    This is the IRL aircraft of my dreams... an amphibious flying RV. With the capability to drop anti-submarine torpedoes.

    Btw add some foam to the hatch. Or youll lose it.
    Also she needs the elevator and rudder to have stiffer wire.

    • @stephenhughcrisp
      @stephenhughcrisp  Před 2 lety

      Thanks. First thing I did - luckily as I stalled her on the second flight

    • @stephenhughcrisp

      Like your advice regarding the elevator and rudder pushrods. Find her difficult to control on landing. I’m sure this will help. I will also replace the servos with waterproof ones.

    • @krotchlickmeugh627
      @krotchlickmeugh627 Před 2 lety

      @@stephenhughcrisp they dont need to be waterproof. I have spektrum and multi plex mg digis in mine. They are cheap and have never had an issue.
      Hitec blue micro servos in the other and no issue either.
      The most important is the foam under the hood.
      Differential thrust its super easy.
      And lower your rates. She likes to fly scale. Landing with speed and fly it all the way down. She likes to land power on.
      PLEASE keep your speed up in turns and if you dont do the eflite twin otter CCW rotating props. She has a nasty stall and you will 100% see it happen. So until you get used to her keep her up high.
      When you do experience one. Throttle to 0 let go of the sticks and let her straighten out then light pressure on the elevator and add a little power. If the stall fully develops you will have to put in rudder opposite the spin and it will straighten itself out.
      Lastly if you dont want to do the counter rotating props then mix rudder with ailerons. Either by thumb or with a mix on your radio. Itll keep it from the rear end coming out or slidding out on bank and yank turns.
      Sorry i love this plane and have amassed quite the collection of them. As you know they are very rare ha. I have flown mine alot. Destroyed and rebuilt a few of them too lol

      I tied my hatch to the plane in case it flies off. You added foam so it would float, right? Good idea also!
