There was an old country and western song that had that heavy vibrato sound on the guitar like in riders on the storm at the beginning.
And the chorus repeated the title line " ghost riders in the sky with that minor key sound.
The song was called " ghost riders in the sky ".
A lot of western movies had that heavy vibrato sound that Robbie uses in the beginning of the song, when he's repeating the melody that Jim sings.
Of course riders on the storm is not the same as songs you would hear in a western movie, especially a jazzy piano solo.

Literally. He wrote poetry and never had ideas about joining a band. While writing one afternoon on Venice Beach in CA, he met Ray Manzarek a keyboardist. Jim read some of his poetry to him and Ray suggested they put a band together! Not write a song together first, just jump right in to a band. They soon found John Densmore, the drummer and Robbie Krieger, the guitarist. That line up was never changed. Jim died when he was 27 years old. He is one of the infamous members of the "27 Group".

When I was a kid growing up in rural Wisconsin, I could ride my bike as far as my legs would take me as long as I was home by dark. It made me very sad last Christmas, while delivering Christmas gifts last year to poor children of prison inmates in the city of Flint, seeing those little guys and gals riding their bicycles inside a gated community, surrounded by a tall iron fence. I had freedom to roam anywhere back when I was 14 years old. I miss those days.. That's what it was like when Jim made this song in 1970.

For the first (few?) Doors album, the group didn't have a bassist, so Ray would play the bass line on his keyboard (usually a Hammond or Rhodes Organ) too. They hired a session bassist for Riders on the Storm, but for one of the first examples where it was just Ray, look up Light My Fire.

Background . Morrison had read a biography about a hitchhiker from the 50s who would murder whoever picked him up . Morrison had a genius IQ and his father was an admiral in the navy . He was responsible for firing upon one of our own ships in the gulf of Tonkin to kick off the Vietnam War. I don't know much but I kinda good at history

"Riders on the Storm" was the very last song The Doors recorded. Not too long after, Jim Morrison died at age 27

After listening to Ray Manzarek on the keyboard you might want to check out the song All Blues from Miles Davis' 1959 album Kind of Blue. Many rock musicians were influenced by this classic jazz album which did nothing less than redefine Jazz.

i believe some influences from a old country song called "Ghost Riders in the Sky" came into play during the development of this song

Yep, I'm old enough to remember ghost riders in the sky. It was a radio hit, when I was a boy.
Robbie' heavy tremolo guitar is an echo of that.

The Doors were from the dark side of rock in the Summer Of Love and Age Of Aquarias eras. The only other band like them, for darkness, was Velvet Underground.
