How a slatted rack works

  • The slatted rack is certainly an under used piece of equipment for the hobbyist looking to keep his bees comfortable. Reducing cold in the winter and aiding cooling in the summer. it can even help to reduce swarming. Check my website at www.beeWhisperer.us

I have them on my hives. The only problem I have is they build comb ladders and stuff under the slatted racks.

I don't see that as a problem rather, an improvement to the design!

I let my bees freedom to build and arrange the area under the slatted racks as they see best.

You will need to inspect and remove any of the ladder combs before you treat the hive with Oxalic Acid. Otherwise, the wax could catch on fire and burn your entire hive and kill all your bees.

I'm looking to build a Lazutin double-deep horizontal hive.
How far away should the slats be from the frame bottom bar?
I was thinking about using 1" versus 3/8" bee space.
I would have 2" space below the 3/4" slats.
Could I make the slats slightly thinner 5/8" or is there a benefit for giving the bees some crawling surface on the 3/4" thick slats?
Do the thicker 3/4" slats help provide and keep better insulation and separation of the brood area and the bottom zone?

So do you keep your slatted racks throughout the winter or switch them out early Spring?

They certainly can be used that way but I do not use them....I have too many colonies and don't need the extra equipment.

Not a fan of the screen bottom or slated rack. I’m experimenting right now with some Beatle blocker shims.

I can see potential for problems in hive beetle areas with the slatted rack but I can see myself using the double screen more and more.
