Felder deserves a lot more credit than he's gotten.
I’d say he deserves a lot LESS credit! So many people blurt out that he ‘wrote the song Hotel California’ and these days it seems he doesn’t even bother to correct them because he’s happy to let that untruth - or at least massive exaggeration - grow, so that he can nurture his relevance, which sure doesn’t get fed much by his solo work!
@@VGILeedid he screw your mom or something?! Why the hate? Get over it!

@C CCS I’d put Randy and Henley about equal balcony with Bernie and Glenn a couple of steps behind couple of steps behind. They’ve both got incredible range and utterly distinct sound. Two have the pair of them in the same band, it’s part of the reason they’re not just my favourite band but I think they’re the greatest band ever. This speech does not represent enough of what a great band this was, these guys fought and struggled with every song. They are in the top three bands ever. They always made great music regardless of what they were struggling with. Very different personalities but together they were exceptional and blessed us with some amazing songs.
Just watch Randy's Facial expressions .. listening to DH words . . and at the beginning ... when he walks away and comes back and says I'm ok. So Humble.. and Unlike Frey
That is so accurate
everybody has said it. Timothy Schmidt is all class.
Because he’s giving tribute to Randy, his predecessor, who contributed massively to the success of the band whereas Timothy, nice guy though he obviously is, with a sweet voice too, is basically hired help with the exclusion of singing a couple of songs, only one of which he had any hand in creating. Sorry to sound negative about a nice guy but Timothy barely registers when you figure out how the band achieved their success and their actual body of work. I think Steuart Smith contributed more, as did JD Souther.
Don Felder's ability on the guitar took the Eagles from being good to being great.
Don Felder definitely is the key piece to the puzzle for his guitar talent. Joe is an excellent player but Felder more talent and more of an ingredient in what as you said, took them from good to greatness.... You are correct!!!
100%
I concur
I dunno if I agree. Felder was great, but before he joined Eagles they had a characteristic sound that lifted them above the other wanna-be bands in the overcrowded country-rock genre. And that characteristic sound was due to Randy Meisner and Bernie Leadon, the two veteran co-founders of Eagles - it was their sweet and rich harmonies and excellent instrumentation that gave Eagles their wings. They both left Eagles in order to save their sanity- Bernie after their first FIVE albums, Randy after their first SIX albums. Not much new material was released after Bernie and Randy left, and Eagles became like a cover band doing re-runs of the hits from when Bernie and Randy were in the band.

I'm glad Henley thanked Jackson Browne. The Eagles might not have existed without him. Jackson wrote the first part of Take It Easy, the Eagles's first song ever. He couldn't finish it and let Glenn Frey take a crack at it, and the Eagles were born.
Don't forget Linda. Pivotal to their formation and success as well.
Eagles as a band pre-date the song though.
Jackson wrote 95 % of Take it Easy. Frey added the part about the girl in the flatbed Ford
@LilyRose89 that’s absolutely not how the Eagles were born!
But, yeah, JB did write most of Take It Easy. He has his own version of the song on his own album and it’s nice but far more... hmmm... whimsical maybe? I do t think it’s a patch on the Eagles’ version, either album one in the country rock style or the later concert stuff which leans more on the rock.

@stevenhedrick9516 I’d say 5 major contributors, plus a bit of Walsh and a token contribution at most from Timothy. You’d have to be one huge fan of I Can’t Tell You Why to argue against that and even then you’d be arguing that having Timothy was better than having Randy. Having Randy there gagged and bound against his will and forcing him to sing Take It To The Limit every night would have yielded better results than anything Timothy contributed. Sorry if it sounds like I hate the guy. I really don’t. I just think several non-Eagles friends of the band and hired help have contributed more than he did.

Yes, he sure did. Randy Meisner is on of the most understated talent of this band.
Henley & Frey really made asses of themselves toward Randy & Bernie backstage. From what I've read, they all but told them they were lice for leaving the band. IF I was them, I'd feel a bit weird being onstage with them too.
@@holding53 in Don Felder's book, He spoke about this moment and how this was not the happiest of atmospheres.
Randy was told to stand at the extreme end of the stage, far away from Frey, and that he would be holding a guitar but the guitar would be unplugged. They told Bernie to stand at the opposite end of the stage but I don't think they told Bernie that his guitar would be unplugged. In 'Take It Easy' at one point Bernie looked puzzled, then walked up to the sound equipment and then glared at Frey. But Bernie and Randy turned the tables: In 'Hotel California', Bernie coaxed Randy to come and stand centre stage with him, behind Frey (of which Frey was unaware, so wrapped up in his own greatness!) The two of them (Randy and Bernie) stood there with unplugged instruments, making as if they were also playing in the band - quite rightfully so! I think when Frey found out, he was sooo mad, and during the song when Henley saw what Bernie and Randy had done he was not amused. No wonder that immediately after the show, everybody except Randy split up and went their separate ways, with Randy joining the other inducted musician to celebrate at the bar!
@@ingfig1 Gee, it's a small miracle Frey & Henley even "allowed" Randy Meisner onstage with them. It's easy to see why they chose to call their tour "When Hell Freezes Over" !

Glenn’s mafia don explanation of the group’s claustrophobic and combustible power dynamics is more revealing than intended, beyond the awkward humor he employed to acknowledge it…
Glenn’s speech was probably the best. Henley seemed to have an unusually difficult time articulating despite being the best spoken. I think Glenn really tried to sugarcoat or downplay the discord in the band. Of course, this was before they fired Felder, he wrote his book and all the lawsuits. These guys liked each other for all of 5 minutes. But wow, what an incredible band.

Randy Meisner Thanks for all the songs that you wrote especial YOU ON SONG TALKING ABOUT YOU DIVORCE TAKE IT TO THE LIMITED
When Walsh thanked "Don and Glenn for writing those songs that made his job really easy" (at 7:07) check out Don Felder's sad expression ...Don Felder: the real writer of their biggest hit ever "Hotel California".
Don Felder did'nt write the song. Don Henley did. Felder supplied an intro and chord progression. The genius that is Don Henley supplied the lyrics and Glenn Frey came up with the genesis of the song.
@@scrimmy45 From the book "To The Limit" (1998):
The song "Hotel California" opens and closes with one of the most immediately recognizable signatures in popular music: the
clanging twin guitar riffs of Don Felder and Joe Walsh. "All that music was
written by Felder," Henley says. "He had a little studio in his house. He'd
been an engineer at one point, before he began to play full-time, so he was
really good at it. He created the music track, and although we rerecorded it,
basically all the parts were there. I put the melody on top of it while driving
around in my car. I write a lot of my songs in the car, still the only time and
place in my life I can get some privacy. When it came time to record it, I
spent so much time in the studio I did a lot of Hotel California in a
bathrobe, singing, playing drums, and drinking gin."
You really believe the crap Henley and Frey put in his "documentary".
By the way, in Latinamerica, and I dare to say all over the world too, most people knows this song, most people don't know shit about other Eagles songs, and most people understand nothing about the lyrics because they don't speak english. How about that?

It would have been really funny if Don Felder said "I guess" after echoing Joe Walsh's gratitude to Glen Frey and Don Henley's song writing.
Omg yes 😂🤣😂🤣😂
Zero that would have been priceless ! Henley and Frey are both such pretentious assholes - the fame, adulation and of course the almighty dollar got to them - they think they are the "top tier" - when in reality every member past and present was equally important - were they the meat in the chili ? yep - but without the others there wouldn't be any taste
Haha but it would have been pretty dumb. And actually Felder massively admires Henley. He just thought Frey had some undiagnosed personality disorder.
There’s a funny bit in his book near the very end where - after praising Henley and his talents - he mentions that Henley’s then-new album Inside Job wasn’t doing so well or something silly and pointless like that. He hasn’t heard it. And it didn’t do that well. But he cane across as saying it , well how and why, I’m not sure. With glee? Or suggesting he’d lost it? Ido t know but let’s be clear Mr. Felder, it might not have had the hit singles that The End Of The Innocence had, but listen to it a few times and it’s a brilliant album with not one bad track and some of the best lyrics I’ve ever heard. It also has a song which makes he tear up every single time (Annabel) - the only song that does that to me - and has still outsold all your efforts! D’oh!
What would have been funnier is if he’d gone to the mic and jumped up and down like a little kid, ranting ‘I wrote the song Hotel California, I wrote the SONG. Me!! My song!’ Then started humming and eventually Henley just came up behind him and kicked him in the balls.
Rest In Peace, Randy Meisner.

I love the Eagles! The songs and the arrangements were perfection! My two favorite groups: The Beatles and The Eagles! It’s amazing how they could create so much great music! I’m happy to see that they included Randy, Bernie and Don Felder, despite past kerfuffles.
Well this was before Felder getting the boot.
Randy, Bernie and Don Felder all deserved to be there - and this show was in 1998, *after* Felder left the band. Randy and Bernie co-founded the Eagles with Frey and Henley, then Don Felder joined the band (introduced by Bernie). They were all equal shareholders in a legal entity (Eagles Inc) that owned the band and all profits generated.
@@ingfig1 i thought they fired felder in 2001
@@mrgjg .. Felder did not “get the boot”. He was an equal one-fifth shareholder in the legal entity “Eagles Inc”, and you can’t fire a shareholder! The other 4 shareholders in Eagles Inc were the original 4 1971 co-founders - Randy Meisner, Bernie Leadon, Glenn Frey and Don Henley, later joined by Don Felder in 1974.
The two veteran co-founders were Randy and Bernie, each coming in with credentials and years of experience - Bernie had been in some innovative rock-bluegrass fusion bands, and Randy at age 24 already had 9 years of singing lead and playing Motown-inspired bass in The Drivin Dynamics, The Poor, and Rick Nelson’s Stone Canyon band (he sang lead on his first record single release at age 16, and went on to sing lead on many more singles releases! ). Randy gave Eagles their first million-seller hit (Take It To The Limit) even tho it was not released as a single and was never promoted, and it was the song that the fans demanded to hear as an encore at concerts, showing hat Randy was the biggest drawcard for Eagles. Bernie also gave Eagles their third hit, which was also the first hit composed only by Eagles - the iconic Witchy Woman, with all music parts composed by Bernie and only lyrics by Henley. Eagles’ first two hits (Take It Easy, and Peaceful Easy Feeling) had been written by other artists.
The terms of the share agreement allocated equal shares in all the profits generated by Eagles performances, sales and memorabilia. However, Frey and Henley had decided that they deserved a bigger share than anybody else (the self-promoting Egoes, self-appointed “bosses”) - and they were just helping themselves to more. Felder started noticing large sums “missing” from the Eagles Inc account, and he started asking questions- which is when Frey and Henley sent the notorious “you’re fired” letter that didn’t hold any weight legally speaking. It took many years, but Felder stuck to his guns and continued his charges against the Egoes, and eventually there was an undisclosed settlement on the steps of the courthouse- it is believed that Frey and Henley bought out Felder’s share in Eagles Inc to make Felder’s court case against them go away. By then there were only 3 shareholders in Eagles Inc (both Randy and Bernie had abandoned their shares, choosing instead to save their sanity by leaving the Eagles battleground) - so after Frey and Henley “settled” with Felder, they were the only remaining shareholders in Eagles Inc. Follow the money!
Note that Joe Walsh and Timothy Schmit (who replaced Bernie and Randy respectively) were NOT made shareholders in Eagles Inc, and they were paid to perform with Eagles but had no share in the profits from Eagles Inc - like session musicians or salaried employees.
