      I wanna say the true value in The Last Airbender is in showing the power of animation as a medium capable of doing things that simply can't be translated to 'live action' effectively, and should be taken more seriously. The entire production reeks of people who didn't take it seriously because in their mind it was based on a cartoon for babies and not worthy of any more effort than it was given.

    • @Kawamura2
      @Kawamura2 Před 2 měsíci +4

      @@NuvizzleThat's pretty much the impression I got when I first saw TLA film. First of all, they tried to make the film super serious, almost to the point of being grim. Aang, Katara and Sokka were kids, and in the animation, were shown to be playful like kids generally are. It was serious when it needed to be, but also light hearted. The film had none of that, and it just came across as soulless. It felt almost like Aang wakes up after an apocalypse into a world devoid of life and everything is dire. It's almost as if Shyamalan didn't know a damned thing about the characters or setting of the film at all.

As a Cutter/Editor, I know excatly how much effort went into writing, filming and especially editing the whole process (making you sit in the train with the actors for 2.5 seconds - enormous editing effort for that short piece). Producing a 2 1/2 hour video with that much creative elements... and it "just" took you two months... If I didn't get this detail I would have thought about the double of that time. I think that is kind of fast.

      honestly, i have a low attention span (ADHD) and it actually HELPS me pay attention when things are so well crafted as this. i can’t watch iceberg videos because they’re so loosely structured and it’s just a bunch of “here’s this thing. here’s another thing” and i can’t for the life of me make myself listen to it, despite how much i love hearing people talk about their passions. the iceberg videos on this channel, though? i never once zoned out. even people with low attention spans can enjoy longform media (and i actually prefer it), as long as it has structure and is engaging. i mean, i guess i can’t speak for everyone, but it works for me

    both Split and Glass handles DID quite badly.
    like, not even bc of the superpower stuff, since the context is that it's actually sorta incidental rather than the disorder being the cause of the power.
    But bc of stuff like "the real personality", as that is just not a thing. All the alters are equally real and part of a single whole, which also leads to the problem with the common and harmful stereotype of the "Evil Personality", no alter would go as far as committing murder unless all of the alters wanted it.
    And destructive alters are way more likely to harm their own body than anyone else.
    So the only way to have made Mr Beast make sense would be to have Kevin deep down share those same values and desire to kill, he just never had the guts to act on it.
    Like... I feel like these movies are on some level trying to represent DID somewhat accurately at times, but that kinda makes it worse than if they had made thing completely inaccurate.
    I could even see, in a vacuum, an "evil personality" making sense in context of a more fantastical story, but with how overused that trope is and how much it's stigmatized real life ppl with DID, it just doesn't rly feel worth it to me.
    No to mention due to the Unbreakable reveal being so late into the film most ppl who only saw Split but had not seen Unbreakable then just saw DID being portrayed as something mystical, supernatural and sinister within a seemingly normal world for seemingly no reason.

    • @pineapplequeen13
      @pineapplequeen13 Před 4 měsíci +36

      Yeah, I was thinking about this while I watched that part, wondering if he would mention it. Ultimately, I can see why he might not have, considering this is a video about finding positives in films that up-front are immediately declared as flawed by most people.
      But I do still think it bears saying that Split (I haven't seen Glass so I can't really speak on it past what Jeff has said here) really did a piss poor job at explaining and characterizing a person suffering from DID.

    • @bepamungkas

      In MNS defense, Dr Fletcher mentioned that "some" DID case she handled manifest physically in a way that's only possible within the film universe (DID won't save you from rising insulin price in real world, for example).
      Moon Knight arguably have the same problem with violence tendency of the alters, but the backlash against Split was more pronounced. Probably due to his role as villain rather than hero.

    well ... no, the Choreographies are also bad and lame.
    I accept the statment, that M. Night Shyamalan is capable of writing serious moments and wrap them into a interesting setting, to let these dialogs ... these dropletts of ingenuity happen, but thats it and he never developed any further, especally as a Director.
    Seeing the scene from "Signs" and "The Happening" in comparison it becomes obviouse that the Success of these Scenes and films depent strongly on the actors and Shyamalan is unable to direct his cast. Gibson in "Signs" understood the scene and delievered what this was about. Wahlberg in "The happening" had absolute no idea what he is doing. As a director it is nice if the cast get their roles straight, but you have also to see, unterstand and help if they struggle.
    Yes, Mark Wahlberg is a basiclly not a very good actor, but hell, while the "the happening" somehow happens to my brain drained helplessly asking "What the fu do you want to tell me?"
    In this regard "The Last Airbender" is actually better because even a braindead get the Story of a "Choosen one, that will save the world!"/"These ones are the good and the other ones are the badies!" straight.
    Maybe it is unfair to rate "The happening" even worst than "The last Airbender" ... but while the one dares to try whatever something even when it is bad through and through, the other one does absolutly nothing but just annoying me.

      i do genuinely think that the choreography is good in last airbender. most of the time its unfortunately drowned out by the visual clutter that they chose to drench every scene in.
      i usually try to avoid answering peoples own analysis in the comments, both because I dont want to accidentally effect or alter someone elses take that they may have formed while watching the video, but also because depending on the contents of their analysis i might not even be able to genuinely respond without contradicting parts of my own video (short elaboration at 1:10:10). that being said though, I do for some reason feel compelled to respond shortly to your thoughts (probably because I agree with you on parts of it):
      I think M night shyamalan is a flawed director. I agree with you that he seems to lack the ability to help his actors deliver their best performances. a directors job is first and foremost, as far as im concerned, to get the absolute best performances out of their actors, and if an actor who's previously performed well in other films perform badly in theirs, its very likely because they didnt provide them with enough/good direction. all that to say: i think you are right in that m night shyamalan never developed beyond a certain point.
      my actual, true, genuine opinion (without taking entertainment value into account) is that I love watching M nights films because they are always fun (like i stated in the video), hence i can genuinely say that he is one of my favourites, but i'm also of the opinion that he is, as a director, not among the best at his job. it's like a balancing act between these genuinely good moments and all the strange and surreal choices he makes for everything surrounding those good scenes.
      I am entertained by everything m night shyamalan has done. but i am not blind to his flaws.
      thank you for your comment, i appreciated reading it.

      @thyxarts9736....The whole video is his opinion. Make your own video because no one else cares that you think the opposite LOL.
