- Not only is this video about connecting Midi and Audio for a live hardware rig, my talk though includes tips, tricks & thoughts for composition and performance. I filmed this tour of my live rig to inspire budding electronic music producers and artists who are interested in making music with a lawless setup.

"Lawless" is my favourite autocorrect fail!
yes lol, I will try and remember to say D A W less nextime
Awesome to see you back with another tutorial!
Hey, thanks! Good to here from you B&D
Have to agree....it is meditative, trying to explain it to people is difficult....but you just want them to feel it.....and yes be like water ,go with the flow....rigidity is limiting, thanks for the mobile info.....I knick an idea every once in awhile 😊
It’s all about sharing, have fun, enjoy :)
What is that case?
Sorry for some reason I missed your question. It’s a Nanuk 990 with removable hinges. It’s water tight which got properly tested when I was in an open boat in a tropical storm with it in the sea around the coast of the Dominican Republic.

Can you share the brand of your case?

How do you use the Strymon deco? It is a wonderlful device an I have had it once, but didn`t use it much - mainly beacause it has a mono input. Do you color one of your mono-synths with it?
Hi Taneli, good question. The deco actually has a stereo input. It can be used in two ways. Either as a stereo channel, or 2 completely separate mono channels. This is done my switching it to worth mode by taking the back off and changing a double pin position on the circuit board. The input Jack, although it looks mono is a stereo Jack. At them money I am using it in stereo mode for just the drum / percussion sounds. The kick goes through a separate channel and does not go through the Decco. This is because the low frequencies would saturate too much before I get the right level of the kick with the music I’m creating. A artistic choice. I used to (on my other setup) run a the drums in mono through one of the channels and the 303 through the other :)
Hi Tom, Awesome backdrop for a gear setup vid.......Are you using a midi merger to get the differant midi channels (drum and 3/4) from the hapax into the blackbox or did you figure out how to get the hapax to combine them as i have a hapax and could not figure it out.
Hi Kev, i use on of the midi port B to control the black box. Instead of using the notes on one midi channel, I set it up for one midi channel per pad. This then allows me to be flexible between standard one shot style or more complex pitch control slicing etc. you need to go to the ‘config’ section of the pad and scroll down to setup the midi for each pad.
@Wildb0y cheers Tom for the quick response.....I presume you mean the pads on the hapax as I don't have a blackbox.
@@KevM-2023 ahh sorry Kev, my bad, I didn’t understand the question . I’m not using a midi merger. Could you reframe question again for me please?
@Wildb0y No problem mate...you mentioned you use the 8 part hapax drum track to sequence the blackbox (bb pads 1 to 8) and ALSO two other hapax tracks (3/4) for triggering "percusive elements" ....I just wondered how you combined the midi routing INTO the blackbox as I presume they're leaving the hapax on seperate midi outputs I.e. midi A and midi B. I have similar routing issue with a Virus TI2 which I know you are fond of :-)
@@KevM-2023 ahh ok. So pads 1-8 are on Hapax track 1. Then pads 9-15 are using 7 of the drum channels on the hapax which is on hapax track 3. Then I use hapax track 4 as a polyphonic control for just pad 16 which I setup differently to trigger slicers of longer samples etc. this is just the default setup. I have sometimes gone further and had other hapax tracks 13-16 controlling multiple polyphonic slice pads on the black box. This is all just going through midi port B in the Hapax which is a dedicated port for this setup, luckily the hapax has 4 separate mid ports a-d which is amazing along other cv and gate business
How do you prevent all the symth from looping in the rc 505 if its last in your chain?
HI Simons, I have setup the Loopstation to loop just the mic input for the trumpet and the Nord drum. In fact I have dedicated loop buttons (1&2) for the trumpet and 3&4, for the Nord, then I have 5 spare for doing things with he mix. The routing is super flexible in the 505 mk2. A also have dedicated fx, filters, compression and eq for each of the inputs.
@@Wildb0y Ahh that's clever!!
What if you want to do like filter sweeps or effects for everything (the synths and the loops)? Is that possible somehow?
I am figuring out my looping setup as well at the moment, so I am grateful for the help :)
Hi@@Simonsmukke so you have fx for audio on the way in and a separate fx ban for loops that have been recored. They are on the right of the 505. So what I do is have a filter & delay dedicated to the live rig input, you have to turn it on when you want to use it as it alters the sound slightly if its on all the time. To filter both an audio input and loops you ave recorded you would do this manually by setting up the same fx for loops turning both the adjustment knobs fob for the audio input fx and the loop fx. Does that make sense! TBH its a bit of a fad an I actually have a pioneer RMX-1000 which does a much better job as a master filter, so I tend use that when performing as its a much easier to grab and dial in quickly without too much thought and instead of pressing buttons then adjusting filters on the 505 mk2 hope that helps!
