- Jojo Mayer is a remarkable drummer whose masterful and innovative technique bridges the gap between the worlds of traditional jazz and electronica, the son of a touring musician, Jojo Mayer received his first drum kit at the age of 2, and began playing professionally at 17. He went on to back jazz greats like Dizzy Gillespie and Nina Simone, before transitioning into drum n bass electronica where his mind-boggling abilities allowed him to play beats usually only achievable with drum programming. His instructional DVD "Secret Weapons of the Modern Drummer" has been hailed the "Rosetta Stone of drumming technique."

I know this is supposed to inspire me to practice more but I can't help but walk away feeling totally, utterly defeated and miserable about my own playing... Hats off to Jojo for being so amazing!!
Love Jo Jo playing, no ego, relaxed, and feeling the drums in sync with the music.
God tuned that snare drum
Teddy Eliades God plays on it
Not his usual immortal performance but still love every minute of watching JoJo play
This is amazing. Easily one of the best drum performances I have ever seen.
Best drummer of our time.
Killing this setup. Oh my god
I respect this man so much
like, i go and watch other guys like orbin or roddy and i always come back to jojo and find myself bewildered at how he manages to stun me with his sheer classiness and expertise, not to mention taste. fantastic, just fantastic
His best live performance, in my opinion.
wow. he really shows that drums is a real instrument that can produce incredible music! its like watching a scene from a theater play or a movie!
Such an inspirational speaker and player
thats one sick groove!!! my goodness!
i love this guy!
HE IS AMAZING...!!!!!!!!
dude.... this is ridiculously good.
That's a killer groove.
That's right, Mayer. Make the floor shake with your intensity.
Magical. :)
I like how the cam shakes even though it s five meters away! :D Jojo just kicks ass!
Awesome drummer.
LOL I love his shirt!! It's a shirt with a Japanese Laundry Soap logo on it!
love what he said at the beginning
Jojo is amazing as always I wish there was more nerve in record stores nowadays. Also, I'm glad the china on his left is back.
Amazing way to start, very groovy. And that china hit at circa 1.30 is great.
very cool!
that bass drum sounds FK*N AMAZING!
Sweet bottom end! Sounds like my Ayotte 18x18 bass with the super long decay. What a concept: letting a bass drum ring true. Nice choice, Jojo. Whatever dampening he's using down there surely isn't much. I can't imagine _ever_ putting anything inside a bass drum that isn't a microphone.
I saw some run down on his gear on here and if I recall correctly, he's using a trigger that samples a very low bass note.
the groove starting on 3:04 is so fatback groove inspired .. great!
He's God of drums!
That kick!
Magic
Oh my. Blast beat at 7:19-7:24 !! lol
But seriously that statement about practice versus exercise...he is so insightful. Incredibly musical. Completely next level. Jojo rules.
That fucking bass drum sound....i want.
No words have ever been more true. I dont want chops. I wanna play music.
WHAT A KICK DRUM!
Awesome! Very Gaddish!
effortless
Great when playing traditional grip
@kboyle2 Very true!
Yeahh....
goddamn, so much fuckin groove AHHH
3:04 was the first time I ever saw him switch his stick handling & still play good
Great ghost notes ala Big Dennis Chambers grooving full stop
"Sedation" Deprivation. Nice one Guitar Center lol
@FurlanPaolo thanks man!
@FacePom210 This was so interesting to me as a bass player that I looked it up. Wikipedia says 13" HHX Evolution Top Hi Hat over 14" HHX Evolution Mini-China. :D
@calvinlotz It's probably his Fierce hats from the Vault seires... Seeing as they're his signature hats.
Very inspiring, but you'd expect that from his playing. His words however, are suprisingly just as inspiring from another stand-point. Same goes for other videos of him. Smart dude.
Dat snare angle.
3:03.........yes
So amazing. Loved this wished they did a better job recording
I have never not been impressed by Jojo Mayer.
yea personal preference i'm still digging the Sonor kit:) and Nerve
A shame such a brilliant performance was recorded by a 10 year old.
J M ?
haha and at 0.27 he says ''if you want chops you have to PRACTICE'' haha lol .. but .. im just talking shit ... the point he makes is MORE than clear and its an awesome statement he makes
SREECH!!!!!!!!!!!!!! ZOIIIIINNKKSSSSSSZZZ
Dat bass
knock on wood!
what lacks on the volume of the toms.the snare makes up for it... epic snare!
i want to be this guy
Fucking sick!
i would love to see Jojo on a rock band or some big artist... its the only thing i think he is missing
im glad that no one dislikes this video :D
@JPastorius3 Jaco ftw.
at 3:04 it sounds like he's playing some variation of James Brown's fatback groove.
Who in the Heck would dislike this. I'm guessing they either didn't fast forward past the talking or are so ashamed of their skills they're angry...
If in the next ten years earth will be visited by aliens who speak in drums, jojo will be our hero cause he knows how to communicate through drums :)
does anyone know the hat combo he's stamping his left foot on? i looked at it numerous times and they aren't the same size... i want to say that is the 13" top hat over a 14" mini china, but i'm sooooo confused about it... I want to try a similar combination
a group of two measures of 5/8 and one measure of 6/8
They probably had one of the GC Audio guys running sound........
Great video, hate that he's using the Omnis instead of the Fierce Ride/Crash though. Whatever floats his boat.
they purposely made the tom mics significantly lower than the snare b/c if they were any lowder your head would explode from the awsomeness of his fills
I wish the toms were louder in the mix but other then that.. OM FRIKIN' G
favorite part: 3:37 - 4:13
Bass drum compensates pretty well though :)
That's what often happens with live mixes and I kinda wanna know why.
Sounds like only the overhead mics is on....
The images and the sound not in sync drive me crazy. I reluctantly close my eyes. I wanna hear and see the God of drums.
these are terrible dry sounds...yes, i understand that it's not mixed...but did the sound engineer take ANY time making sure the output levels for each mic were somewhat similar?
Awesome playing as usual by Jojo
are his tom mics even on?
he looks like Vincent Cassel here.. :D
the bass???? how???
I can't count this ... somebody knows?
8 years later, but a VERY, VERY CRAZY 4/4 all the way
So... why just overheads, bass drum and aux. snare in the mix?
Sounds like the overheads are the only thing picking up the toms.
there is something about this musician that is not human. In every drummer i see no matter how good they always seem human. Im not saying hes the best, but he's definatly not full human. The way he talks, the way he drums, just everything. he has broken my brain.
Some toms don't sound in the mix. The fills sound incomplete... great, great drummer anyway.
Thats guitar center for ya🙄
at exactly 3:04..... you know what I mean
0 dislike it's normal
idears.
O_O
AAXtreme China 19? o.O
💣
your slightly better!
Anyone else need new undies after this?
Only bad part was the mix.... more TOMS!!!
dude! don't say that! it's like jinxing a video! XD
someone disliked it to fuck with you
men, what is it "chops"?
desiGnampthia I wouldn't say chops are something as so black and white as described. Chops, or anything in the field of art for that matter, can not really be a impressing rudimental feat but a gateway in which to help you compliment the music and express yourself. But it is something that can be easily abused or impressive depending on how much you use them. Too much; you'll lose the musical audience, but a few hear and there, and you keep the audience on edge.
Sorry but "chops are to impress other" comment is so idiotic, Chops serves the music piece and songs. too...,As long you use it tastefully and in a context of music arrangements.
He says exactly the opposite in the beggining of the video.
