  • Norm Lewis Wishes You a Swingin' Christmas comes to Feinstein's/54 Below for five performances from December 20-24. The show marks Lewis' Feinstein's/54 Below debut, where the Broadway vet will share his holiday spirit with the audiences who have seen him through his Tony-nominated performance in The Gershwins' Porgy and Bess, his history-making run as Broadway's first African-American Phantom in The Phantom of the Opera, and many more. Take a look as Lewis previews one of the numbers on the bill: "No One Is Alone" from Stephen Sondheim's Into the Woods - a sentiment we could all use around the holidays.

    My favorite Sondheim song in the whole world. The lyrics are so incredible and Norm brings it to life like no one else could. Simply magnificent!

    It breaks my heart how he dedicates this to his friend who died of ovarian cancer (because she loved this piece).

    Norm and I used to drink like Russian Sailers back in my New York days at Don't Tell Mama's. Neither one of us had done much of anything yet. Many years later when I had long had my last drink I sang this song for the people who were also trying to have their last drink. It hits so close to home for us.

    I saw the title and gasped. I played the Witch when I was younger. This song already makes me cry, but to hear it in Norm's beautiful voice just made my heart hurt. It's stunning.

    it's the restraint. he holds back for so long and then bangs out some crazy notes at the end when he's ready.

    As usual, just my opinion of course while Mr. Lewis sings beautifully, I really don't like the arrangement. I find it too distracting, like it should be it's own piece, a "theme and variations". It's interesting but seems to be working against the singer. Too elaborate for what is essentially a simple sounding song (not that it's easy to sing, it just should sound like it is).

      Sondheim for tenors has songs like no one is alone fit for male voices... it’s a green book

      I was gonna say the opposite: The accompaniment is extremely intrusive, totally distracts from the vocal.

      I agree. There's a need for space in some pieces. This is a piece that would benefit from some space,

      Love the piano. It’s adds great depth to the song. AND, musicians have every right to interpret their own version of any song. That’s why they are artist. Just like the man singing it the way HE interprets the lyrics. Just remember that next time.

    • @kenzeichner8887
      @kenzeichner8887 Před 2 lety

      Yes, there's a role for interpretation but a good accompanist supports the soloist, doesnt compete with or distract from the soloist. See e.g. the You Tube some 13 years ago of Bernadette Peters singing this song with a very interesting & creative piano accompaniment that complements her singing.
