A tip when doing any sort of neck-work that needs taping the fretboard:
Run one or two strips of tape along the sides of the neck, just below the frets before taping the fingerboard. When you finish your job, just pull one of the side-tapes and the rest covering the fretboard will come off at the same time.

Great info on the Fender mismatched headstock finish. I purchased a late 70's Strat with this same condition. I did a bunch of research to find out why the headstock had such a different appearance then the neck! I thought someone had monkeyed with it, over the years. Very relieved to find out that it was factory correct from Fender. Good bit of history, there.

I bought one just like that in about 74 when I was 15 years old, We use the take off the thumb rest and install them exactly were that one is, it use to come new right under the G string you can see the two holes were it was mounted from the factory sold it in about 78 with a 370 acoustic bass amp for $300, looking at this one I swear it was mine but I doubt it but it looks likes mine.

That "flapper tool" you use is for applying Bondo to metal surfaces in autobody work - the same way a carpenter would use a putty knife to squeeze a straight surface across a wall.

If you are looking for a marker that writes on metal try a GPX. Wont wipe off or wash off man it sticks to metal. Course, it comes in a bunch of colors I just found out. Your favorite blue too. But, they are for Serious Metal work for marking. It will take sanding to get them off the metal so go easy if you get some.

Equipment on a budget for A/V production is in maximum supply these days. You may not get Eddie Kramer level results, but you can definitely get quality content if you know what you're doing. Anyway, sounds cool. :)

Longer is just fine. Kinda feels like we're just hangin' with you while you do all the work. So longer is good as long as you're not just mostly jawing and goofing around for half of it like they do on That Pedal Show or Anderson's stuff. 1968. Same time as when they switched from the gold transition logo and small model name decals to the black, bold decals. 1971 was when they switched to three-bolt neck mount on the Strats and discontinued the maple-cap neck option.

not an total expert here, (vintage 50's tele's-70's basses) but more times than not fender would throw a neck on a body within a year especially in their hay days, not necessarily made at the same time > the neck fit wasnt really made for that guitar but as long as it was a close enough neck fit , just whatever neck worked once it was finished and was playable then. That theory is a testomonial to why strats allways buzz like a freaking bastard, and you have to put a pick or shim under the neck. They never really realized about the neck tolerances, such as today where everybody makes a tele with the tightest fitting neck pocket ever.....etc etc Just a manufacturing GOOF!
