I don't care about the fact she doesn't really know alot about Sweden, I'm just amazed at her having perfect pronounciation and 100% fluency in both the Swedish and English language, even for someone who grew up in Canada and had Swedish parents it's kind of amazing. You can always tell on a few words if someone is Swedish or speak the language but with her it's the consistency that gets me.

About the Swedish birthday song: it's actually both a genious and hillarious piece of art! The lyrics are based on puns and has 3 unofficial but commonly known verses. You usually just sing the first one though, which is nothing special. Malin, however, is referring to the second verse. What she failed to mention though is that the verb 'skjuta' can mean both 'shoot' and 'push'. This is paramount. The song basically goes "May you live for a hundred years, And when you have, you'll be shot, shot, shot..." very very brutal thus far, but then when the "... in a wheelbarrow" part comes, your brain makes the connection and you must reinterperate the verb 'skjuta'. In the full context it becomes apparent that 'skjuta' should be read in it's second meaning: on your 100th birthday, you will be PUSHED in a wheelbarrow.
The following verses follow in the same seemingly morbid fashion.
3rd verse: You will be hung, hung, hung... backwards on a donky (don't know if that's good for a 100 year old, but it's anyway not as brutal as it first appears to be).
4th verse: You will drown drown drown... in champagne.
It is impossible to translate and explain puns, but I wanted to give it a try anyway!

You can clearly tell that Malin has not lived in Sweden for quite a while. She confuses the word "skjuta". It all depends on how it's used in a sentence.. Skjuta can certainly mean "shoot" but in this context it is "Skjuta fram", which means "push foward"

Same comparison for Malin in Sweden gives us 1% of the female population.

I have six friends named Malin, all between the ages of 22 and 32. It's a very common name among young people too.
It's a play with words. You sing "And when s/he has lived (x3) for a hundred years, then s/he will be 'skjutas' (x3)" since 'skjutas' means both to be pushed and to be shot, this is where the first-time listener thinks the birthdayee will be shot, but then you add "...on a wheelbarrow forward" cleverly changing the meaning from 'shot' to 'pushed'.

The song has nothing to do with shooting people, it simply refers to pushing a wheelbarrow around, in which the old person would ride due to being old and decrepit. The Swedish word for shoot also has the common meaning of shove or push.
Slight correction, the song does repeat twice a portion of the song that says 'and then he/she will be shot,' which on its own is ambiguous and can mean either 'and then he/she will be shot,' or 'and then he/she will pushed.' Once the second line is added, the complete phrase unambiguously says 'and then he/she will be pushed forward on a wheelbarrow.' So it is basically a pun, at first jokingly implying that once a person is 100 years old it is time to put them down, and later clarifying that they are simply to old to walk, and thus need to be transported around in a wheelbarrow.

Thank you for clarifying what she's supposed to say, but for me, a non-Swede, she had brought to my attention your beautiful country and language. Famous people misrepresent my country all the time, but sometimes it works in my favor. So, look at the bright side; she got my attention, and hopefully other people's as well. :)

I live kinda in the middle but a little south, in a small city called Örebro and I've never heard that name (As far as I remember) I might have heard it but then it might have been an older person but I've never "meet" someone, and remembered, called Malin here xD And I am swedish, my parents were swedish and my grandparents are swedish so :P

not "about" the same it's a homonym, which is intended as a joke(in the song) and thats kind of difficult to translate on the spot. and the language itself isn't "hurdy gurdy" but the way we speak, the tone and cadence, is very much like that. compared to a lot of other languages our cadence is almost like song.

It's the same melody we have for our traditional birthday song. :) And about the stereotypes, I guess for others it sounds like "hurdy gurdy", and of course something like that isn't meant to take 100% serious. When people make fun of, or just tell how we Germans talk, I can't agree, either. But I hear my own language of course different than foreigners. For me it isn't hard or rude. For me it's a very poetry sounding languag, because our huge vocabulary, allows us to express feelings and things in such subtly ways. :) Swedish sounds very lovely for me, because it's a very singing language, and has a huge vocabulary, too. :)

I think that Malin is quite common for people born after 1964 when the TV-series "Vi på Saltkråkan" was first shown on TV. The elder sister was named Malin and people started to name their newborn girls Malin after that. I think it's most common among people in Malin Åkermans generation, women born in the 1970's. Among elderly people born in 1920's, 1930's and 1940's it's not common at all

Hate when people ( especially americans ) thinks that we swedish people talk like the Swedish Chef.. Read a book. Malin is fluent in swedish but needs to increase her vocalbury a little bit. Skjutas means both get shoot and pushed.
I'm not Swedish, although I do speak some swedish, so I won't pretend to know the intention behind the lyrics. However I was told by a swedish person that it was meant as a play on the two meanings of the word skjuta. :)
Regarding her talk about the birthday song on 02:15, she is sort of wrong on the content of the song, as I´m sure someone else in the commentfield have mentioned at some point.
Its a play of words with dubble meanings. The word Skjuta in Swedish can mean both shoot and push(/shove). The first verse starts with this dubble meaning (to intentionelly imply its shot) and then continues with the push in this fashion:
"And then he´s going to be shot/pushed...
And then he´s going to be shot/pushed... in a wheelbarrow."
The next verse plays with the word for "hanged" (which also means sort of attached in swedish), followed by the word "drowned", ending with "...drowned in a bottle of champaign."
So its obviously not litteraly to shoot someone ^^.
Her Swedish pronunciation on 02:49 is actually pretty good though.

If Swedish isn't an ethnicity, then the term ethnicity doesn't exist, so there would be no such thing as ethnic Russians, Japanese or Irish if one was to follow your logic. I don't associate myself with the country I was born in at all, I left when I was just a few months old and none of my parents come from there. My father is Swedish, he spoke Swedish with me at home, half my family is Swedish, hence I am half Swedish.

Malin is a very common name (about 50 000 people are called Malin in Sweden) and its popularity peaked in the 70's and 80's. Åkerman was born in 1978 so her parents naming her Malin is by no means odd or noteworthy :p

Actually, when people who don't speak swedish hear us talk to eachother, they think it sounds like the swedish chef. A lot of people think we "sing-talk", but it does depend on where you're from in Sweden. The melody is very similar though :)
My guess is that Malin was a name like Eleanor that was very old and made a recent come back. It's not currently in the top 100 for Sweden either. It seems like it was pretty popular in 98' and I imagine Malin Ackerman didn't know a lot of Swedish kids or teens 5-10 years ago when she was talking about this. Shes also probably not the biggest buff on Swedish things shes a Swediah Canadian. I'm a Norwegian American and know nothing give her a break.

I've heard all kinds of accents, from the Swedish chef on the Muppet Show, to Ann Margret, to Malin Ackerman (Åkerman, really), and Malin is by far the best.
